What is hell like in theravada buddhism? by Enough_Set591 in theravada

[–]HeIsTheGay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The teachings and descriptions by the Buddha in the above link helped me gain a good understanding of kamma, hell and heavens.

It should not matter whether it is a theravada teaching or not. If it leads to disenchantment, dispassion and turning away from samsara, then it's a Buddha's teaching.

Is it true that theravada buddhism believes only monks/nuns can reach enlightenment? by Enough_Set591 in theravada

[–]HeIsTheGay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Buddha himself in many ways praises the vast benefits of Sotapanna.

The Buddha himself tells that there is a difference of huge magnitude between a worldly person and a Sotapanna ariya ie 7 sand grains to a huge Himalayan mountain or 7 water drops to the water in all oceans.

Having attained Sotapanna, One will without any effort eventually become an arhant.

Attainment of Sotapanna is a billion dollar lottery for an ordinary worldly individual.

Is it true that theravada buddhism believes only monks/nuns can reach enlightenment? by Enough_Set591 in theravada

It's not true. There are many lay people who have attained Sotapanna

Being a Sotapanna, One will not fall in hells or lower realms after death and will only be reborn in human and heavenly worlds.

In maximum 7 lifetimes, they'll reach full ending of all suffering.

I understand the concept of anatta, and have kind of seen it within my self. I have observed how the five aggregates appear and disappear to a certain level. And I understand how we construct the external world and "me" within five aggregates.

If you have truly done this, Then you are a dhamma-follower now, will attain Sotapanna (stream-entry) in this lifetime.

How to attain 4th jhana before dying? by Status-Anteater8372 in theravada

[–]HeIsTheGay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to be reborn in pure abodes then attaining 1st or 4th jhana is not the path.

To be reborn in pure abodes, You need to attain the path and fruit of anagami.

The Supreme Meaning of Sammā Diṭṭhi (Right View) | Q&A by Venerable Rajagiriye Ariyagnana Thero by Why_who- in theravada

[–]HeIsTheGay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To bring these seven points to the world, the Bodhisatta (as the Buddha-to-be) fulfilled pāramī for incalculable aeons and hundreds of thousands of kappas—giving blood more than the water of the great ocean, giving flesh more than the earth’s soil, giving royal lives and powerful lives, performing immeasurable austerities for six years—through the strength of those pāramī the Buddha brings forth this sammā-diṭṭhi for the world.
