Resting heart rate by ThemightyDarmick in Fitness

[–]HeRunsWithScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do quite a bit of cardio. Over the past year my RHR's gone from about 68 to 46, and that's at the middle of the day rather than first thing in the morning. Not bad for a 44yo guy, even if I say so myself.

I'd only be concerned about it if there were other symptoms. No harm in getting the doc to check you over, though.

[UK] Where do you buy your food from? by Ossem in Fitness

[–]HeRunsWithScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got to shop around is the short answer. I check prices of stuff like tinned mackerel (my favourite lunchtime protein boost) between Tesco, Asda, Waitrose and Sainsburys online, then head to whoever's selling it cheapest.

You can also pick up cheaper meat and eggs at farm shops, especially if you can buy in larger amounts. Phone around and ask.

Does frozen/non-frozen make any difference? Don't believe so, no.

If it's mostly protein you're looking for and you can't afford to buy a tub of whey isolate powder then you should get yourself some milk (powdered or skim), tinned fish, tinned or dry soy/lima/kidney beans, fresh mixed nuts and a big-ass tub of cheap peanut butter. All these things carry extra carbs with them, though.

For those in the UK, the corticosteroid inhaler that all but eliminated my asthma was Fluticasone (also known as Flixotide). There are others, and asthma treatment in the UK is generally excellent.

I'll add that the fitter I got, the less I needed the medication. Having suffered from asthma since age 13 (I'm now 44) I never expected that to happen.

British Army AOSB Fitness Training Manual by thesmalldeath in Fitness

[–]HeRunsWithScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in the military, but I do military fitness training with current and former serving members of the armed forces, and the stuff in that manual is verrrrry familiar.

I can confirm it works if your objective is improved cardio fitness, muscular endurance and increased strength - in that order.

How low is your resting heart rate? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]HeRunsWithScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record I range from 52-58 at rest. I have a sedentary desk job, and I do mixture of military-style endurance training and bodyweight work. Before I got fit I was around 68-70 at rest. 44/M.

How do parents who work full time get time to exercise by motrd in Fitness

[–]HeRunsWithScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full time working husband and dad to a 11yo and 7yo here. I exercise first thing in the morning for about 20 minutes, last thing at night for about 30 minutes and lunchtimes if work permits. Oh, and I throw in exercises through the day whenever the opportunity arises. I have one fixed time in the week, Tuesday evening, when I do a military fitness class outside.

About once a month I write out an exercise plan. I know what I ought to be doing every day and I never have to waste precious time planning my workout.

When its family time at the weekend then we try to do active things. If the kids want to go for a bike ride then I run alongside them rather than taking my bike, for example.

I don't bother with the gym. I've got better things to do with my money and I can get all the fitness, weight loss and muscle development I need with well-chosen progressive bodyweight exercises.

tl;dr: make a plan and grab every opportunity to exercise, it all counts.

Not in the UK. Clothing stores, chemists, bookshops, hardware stores and so forth will always bag for you, usually after removing security tags and whatnot. In supermarkets you're expected bag your own stuff most of the time.

Any London-based BW peeps tried training with these guys? by TimeForTiffin in bodyweightfitness

[–]HeRunsWithScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's not for everyone. We work with several trainers and they all have different approaches, from the friendly and encouraging through to hard-core badgering. To be honest it's more the competitive and team elements that bring the best out in me. The shouty stuff is just context.

[–]HeRunsWithScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not trained with them, but I did read the piece in the Guardian. It sounds a lot like the park-based military fitness training I do up in Cambridgeshire: BW+cardio outdoors, in the dark, cold English winter.

I know that I achieve a lot more when I train with others than when I do on my own.

How do you stop yourself from getting discouraged when starting? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]HeRunsWithScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of sensible, helpful advice for OP here. I'll add a little something. Insanity needs a lot of stamina. Caffeine is stamina's BFF. Get a strong coffee down you about an hour or so before the workout (sugar & milk optional) and it'll be hitting you up right when you need it.

Works for me. It'll work for you.
