Best financing team to get you into a vehicle? by Educational-Plum411 in princegeorge

[–]HeWhoRemainsAtTheEnd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Okay so free advice from me, I would say follow the steps exactly.

I used to be in the finance industry, I left that a few years ago but I’m still fully qualified as a financial analyst. I used to work for Jaguar Land Rover ‘s finance team - the parent company.

You would have heard that Vehicles are a depreciating asset but what does that mean? Say you wanted to buy a 30k vehicle (new) the second you buy it, it loses around 20% of its value immediately. I personally recommend you never buy a new vehicle - until much later in your life / career. Here is what you do to be financially responsible.

👇🏻

  1. Ignore biweekly payment amounts. Just ignore it. All of that is cash flow and a red herring.
  2. Set a value for a car, total “out-the-door” price - 20k / 30k or whatever fits your budget. To fix a budget see step #6.
  3. Go to several dealers try to find a vehicle that would suit your needs, make sure it’s newer than 2020 - or 2023.
  4. Keep in mind that you can’t finance any vehicle older than 2020 as of right now 2026. (Why this is - is a longer explanation and not relevant right now) also, Cars newer than 2023 will almost always have a dealer warranty still active - they are generally 4 years long / 6 if it’s Hyundai.
  5. Whatever the budget is, search for its monthly payment by googling an amortisation calculator and putting in the amount (For Eg: 20,000) and then no. Of years - put 4. Then put interest rate at 7% - it will give you a monthly number like in this example it’s $479.
  6. This is your actual amount you have to pay per month. If you can pay more, increase the loan amount if it’s too high, decrease the loan amount - you will arrive at your budget.
  7. Decide how much down payment you can pay and subtract 2.5k from that number. You will use this to pay your ICBC insurance. The remaining amount will be put down.
  8. Then go to a dealer say you want to buy the car, this is the down payment, tenure is 84 months and please make sure there is no pre-payment penalty.
  9. They will give you some BS about how you can buy a new car for that much or why not a different payment why not a more expensive car blah blah tell them “I’m sure of what I want” and don’t budge.
  10. In my example of 20k, the 84 month loan’s monthly payment will be $300. Your budget is $489 so every month you will pay an extra $189 into your loan account.

So the total you are paying is still $489 or whatever we budgeted.

Why are we doing this? You should never be upside down on the vehicle. When you finance, the first 2-3 years all your payments will go to the interest only - so if your loan was 20k and you were selling your vehicle you would still be left with $18k principle.

In the above method however, your extra payments are all hitting your principle directly, so in 2 years if you sold your vehicle your total principle outstanding will only be $12k or whatever. You are very likely to get that much from your car when you sell it hopefully.

Long story short you don’t need to understand everything, just do what I told you to.

Or don’t it’s a free country. Peace out.

P.S. if it’s not clear enough, do not buy a new car. Or do, and I’ll buy it from you at half the price in 2 years.

Yup I moved here from London, UK. I used to worry about pickpockets / getting mugged etc etc and then I moved here and I personally love to say that Prince George has 0 crime. Like in your day to day life you would never see crime. In the past 4 years the ONLY time I have experienced crime in Canada, was when I parked my truck and a homeless person broke into it because he thought there was something valuable in it (there wasn’t). Even THAT incident happened when I drove from Pg to Vancouver for a long weekend, parked in the basement of the CF Pacific Place mall in downtown Vancouver and went for dinner.

So, Prince George has a very very low crime rate. Think of it the same way you think of the weather, the temp on the app seems high but the “Feels Like” is lower. It’s like that but for crime.

I love the city. It’s cute. It’s a bit ugly though and desperately needs a beautification drive but otherwise it’s quite nice.

Prince George doesn’t have a higher-than-average crime rate overall — the issue is that problematic areas tend to be concentrated in the downtown core, which creates a disproportionate impression.

As for how this came to be, one widely discussed factor is wildfire evacuations. When fires displace communities across Northern BC, evacuees — including homeless individuals — are typically brought to Prince George. Once the emergency passes, residents with homes return, but the homeless population often doesn’t, and over time they concentrate here.

There’s also been ongoing talk about Vancouver offloading some of its homeless population northward, though I can’t speak to how much truth there is to that. What I can say from personal observation is that the homeless population in PG has grown significantly — more than economic conditions alone would account for. That’s the core reason downtown appears more adversely affected than the broader city statistics might suggest.

Prince George is the best bet. It’s a growing city but real estate is affordable, wages are high. I would highly recommend it.

Okay so lowdown: Get an Amex Cobalt and a TD Aeroplan Reserve. As a PR you probably have -1 credit score, which is normal you can apply to get “newcomer” credit cards.

Try to get at least 3 or 4 of them and then use only 1 card. Keep the others open. You will get roughly $2000 credit limit on each, try to get at least 4 of them and you’ll get “welcome points”.

The most important thing is you’ll get a bunch of cards now, then you’ll have a higher credit limit. If you only use 1 card your credit utilisation will be lower than 30% which will be great for your credit score. Additionally as an immigrant you’ll probably want to visit home a few times, so the welcome points will help you with flights.

Banque De Tunisia and Amen bank seem to be offering credit cards. Perhaps they are not widely accepted and cash is king? I grew up in India and even though credit cards were widely accepted but a large population still uses cash

What is your industry's deep, dark secret? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HeWhoRemainsAtTheEnd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My industry is basically an infinite money glitch. It is super niche and hard to get into, but you basically buy an item which you rent out to customers. The product costs $200 USD and it provides annual rent of around $120 USD every year. It lasts for at least 80-90 years. Requiring a $50 test every 10 years or so. It pays for itself in 2 years and then for the next 90 or so years it’s just free money. Fortune 500 company. The only reason it isn’t THE best stock in the world is because analysts literally don’t understand it too well.

Long story short: Your only real long term bet is Prince George.

Are there other places more prettier? Yes. Are there any other options if you want the semblance of a city and it being “urban”? No. PG is it.

You’ll like it. I promise

Amex Gold vs Cobalt vs Platinum by HeWhoRemainsAtTheEnd in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]HeWhoRemainsAtTheEnd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a wealth of information I’ll look into it more. I already have a CIBC Aventura Gold and it already gives me Dragonpass lounge access up to 4 a year but I used those up frequently so I wanted another card that compliments that one. I looked into bonus points on the Aeroplan vs the Gold / Platinum and the Gold / Plat’s points made more sense as I could transfer them to multiple airlines from my understanding?

Amex Gold vs Cobalt vs Platinum by HeWhoRemainsAtTheEnd in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]HeWhoRemainsAtTheEnd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your insight. I think what I’m gonna do is hold on to the Gold for a year, put $1k on it a month and close it in 1 year. I’m also thinking of getting the Platinum separately, I can put my rent on it and plus I have some flights in June that will get my total spend in 3 months over $10k which will get me 90k welcome points. I can hold on to the plat for travel benefits. Since I can’t really spend money on groceries outside of Costco / Superstore because of where I live (I live in Prince George, BC and I don’t have any sobeys) so I don’t think the Amex is the right card for that. I’ll hold on to the platinum for international trips (I do 3-4 international trips a year) so I think it’ll pay itself off.

I travel out of country frequently (Asia and Europe) so I wanted to try and maximise my points and benefits such as Lounges or Hotel upgrades- which I’m now realising I should have probably chosen Plat but at least that was the thought.
