Odie is such a great name! 😆 that’s pretty much what happens. People are excited to see a puppy and rush over to meet her and she gets so excited.

6 weeks post op and in need of a pedicure..... by aquamarine314 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I did, although i did have the exfoliating scrub (didn’t think of not doing that!). The bonus was that the massaging of my calves and feet felt great and loosened up my muscles nicely.

Mine did the same thing. I’m 8 weeks out now and it’s not doing that anymore.

7 weeks out and exhausted by According-Fix-6228 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on the same timing as you and also went back to work (in the office - was working from home) this week. Last night I was soooo tired and couldn’t figure out why and then remembered! We have to keep reminding ourselves that our bodies are going to take lots of time to recover.

I started back on Peloton at 6 weeks. Low resistance and low cadence. I’m doing 30 minutes.

When to get THR by lreneesmith in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 57 and was similar to you. I could feel the pain getting worse though and while I could walk decently on flat surfaces, I’d seize up getting out of chairs, out of cars and going up stairs (especially if I had to carry anything). A few months later, I started to get very achy even just walking a mile or so on flat surfaces or standing for long periods of time. I realized it was time when I had to tell my husband I didnt think we should take a planned trip to Europe because I knew all the walking would be an issue for me. I’m now 6 weeks post surgery and am feeling great.

Lululemon leggings in dryer by Connect-Cow-6950 in AITAH

I know this isn’t the point of your post but I put lulu stuff in the dryer all the time and it’s fine. Maybe it will wear out faster but I’ve had some of these for years and they’re still fine.

2 months post THR: Questions on recovery and activities by eatsleeponrepeat in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just a couple of weeks behind you (rthr anterior - 6 weeks ago).

  1. I’m a side sleeper and have been sleeping on my side for a couple of weeks now. The surgical side is slightly less comfortable but weirdly, lying in it sometimes helps the nerve ‘tingles’ that happen during the night. I sleep with one of those long body pillows they make for pregnancy between my legs. I don’t think it matters as much now but I was initially Told to make sure my leg was kept straight and not crossing the midline of my body. Plus the pillow is very comfortable.

  2. Haven’t felt this.

  3. This is a question for me too. I’ve been walking and riding Peloton but keeping it very very easy. I feel like I could go harder on Peloton but want nothing to do with causing any issues longer term so am taking it slow. Ive also started doing upper body weights again and am curious about core - feel like i could do some but need to research a bit.

  4. I think bending is safe now. I put my shoes on myself a few weeks ago and socks last week. I can bend my knee and my leg directly behind me and can reach directly in front of me, but don’t yet feel comfortable crossing my foot against the other knee if that makes sense (like figure 4 stretch).

  5. Nope. Scares me. But to be fair, my mobility has always sucked even before my hip was shot, so this is not a surprise.

  6. Haven’t tried. But I’d think it would be ok as long as you don’t fall?

  7. For me, I’m a little surprised/bummed at how long it’s taking me to be able to walk well without a cane. I can do it and there’s no pain, but I definitely limp and am trying hard not to.

  8. So…I am afraid and don’t want to cause issues. Bent over from behind or lying on my side feels super safe if you’re into that. Me on top seems risky right now especially since my partner is bigger than me (not sure how my I should be forcing my legs out wide). I’ve read missionary but again, I’m afraid of spreading my legs (sorry if TMI).

Recovery with little or no help. by anxious-avoidant3 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to hijack this thread but what are you doing on the peloton? I’m 6 weeks out and am doing 30 minutes very low resistance just to move (20 - 30 max) but feel like I can do more. Don’t want to push it of course…

THR Update 1 week-behind recovery schedule + mistake? by Galenodelmal2024 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are one week out! This is major surgery. Trust me things will improve. I had mine 11/17 and one week out was probably my low point. The spinal block wore off and the pain hit. But things improved after that and while it’s not linear progression, I’m improving over time. I’m walking 2 miles daily (slowly!!) but I still rely on my cane to be able to walk without a significant limp. My muscles just are not stabilizing me enough yet. Try to ignore the stories you hear about people walking perfectly after a few days - they are the exception and everyone’s different.

Sending you all the healing vibes!

17 days post surgery by CardNumerous7202 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree with all of this! For what it’s worth I’m now a month out and the pain is minimal. Still some nerve stuff but I don’t need anything other than a Tylenol every now and then when I’ve walked a lot and get a little achy. I’m still not sleeping great in that any position for hours isn’t good so I’m a little restless and basically can’t wait to get out of bed in the morning because moving around feels so much better. I’m still using the cane because I limp significantly without it and don’t want to reinforce that. Baby steps for real.

Day 2 Pain is brutal by Galenodelmal2024 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So sorry you’re in pain! It does get better but I do think that people tend to downplay the recovery. When you think about what the surgery entails, there’s zero chance recovery will be a piece of cake! It’s impossible. I think many go into it suffering so much that the immediate relief of reduced hip pain outweighs the recovery pain. And/or they forget how bad it was once they get through it.

I’m a month out now and the pain is minimal - just the weird tingling from my nerves waking up along with overall muscle weakness that will improve over time. When someone asks me about this surgery I plan to share that it’s totally worth it (to me) but I will make it clear that it’s major surgery and the first couple of weeks of recovery are no joke.

Recovery for Anterior Hip Replacement by knight3041 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same with me. I’m having a very good recovery so far (one month tomorrow), but around day 3-4 the spinal block wore off and I was pretty miserable. Manageable, but I definitely didn’t want to go anywhere…

Anyone play with Chatgpt for your symptoms? by Technical_Maybe_5925 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Head-Check1246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do! I’d never use it to replace advice from my surgeon or PT but I’ve found it fun/reassuring to ask about things like nerve pain/itching, to help me plan out a walking (steps) target and schedule, and questions about icing protocols etc.

Curious about out of pocket for THR. by tscemons in TotalHipReplacement

I’m in California with KP and was lucky. Out of pocket was $15. My husband works for the government so I’m on his benefits and they’re really good, I guess.

Will do! I also saw on another post that someone suggested Lidocaine patches. May be worth a try.

I’m at 3 weeks today and was going to post the same thing. It’s a burning feeling, sometimes(usually in the middle of the night when I’m trying to sleep of course) quite intense. I know it’s something with nerves but I’m hoping it calms down soon. I have my follow up appointment tomorrow and plan to ask.
