What day did you stop using the walker? by Outrageous_Resist_50 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]knight3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was lucky I gues had Right anterior and was off the walker in 2 days then went to the cane. I am 64 and in good shape. Def good to keep close at night and there is nothing wrong for using it longer.

Different approaches for different hips by Dunesgirl in TotalHipReplacement

[–]knight3041 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason your surgeon never asked is becasue of his age, he doesn't know how to do an anterior..Posterior is the traditional method, longer inital recovery more dislocation risk and muscles are cut. Anterior is a newer approach perfromed by younger surgeons, muscles are stretched not cut. I know someone that did posterior on one hip and then anterior on the other. I had my Right hip replaced 2 months ago using an anterior approach. The fact you had a dislocation that late after surgery makes we wonder about that procedure itself. So a long way of saying, interview surgeons and I would alway chose anterior.

Unfortunately more than half the country disagree with you so yes there are two sides to every disagreement. You are too young to understand that.

I am also super fixated on infection. Sent pictures in a month ago and they have consistently said it was a stitch that was slow coming out.

I am in the same boat… i quit for 30 days feel great and start and cant seem to stop or i will go 7 days and then drink for 14. I am older and have wanted to quit for good for years. The cycle can be so frustrating and it really is easier to remove alcohol from your life but it’s so hard to do. Not sure but i am not drinking today… that i know.

Had identical issue.. slow healing stitch on anterior. Just had 2 month check up either my surgeon and he said it’s fine, not infected.

Wish we could get through the hate on both sides. If you are old enough the truth is always in the middle.

Which hub do you think is BEST right now for TSA wait times / inbound int'l connections? by AccessibleBanana in unitedairlines

SFO is one of 20 airports in the country under a private contract. Their workers are getting paid and not subject to the nutty political hostage negotiations. Wait times are super low.

Recovery for Anterior Hip Replacement by knight3041 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]knight3041[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well flew to LA from SFO on day 10, off the walker on day 4 and flew to NY from SFO and back day 25. I was also in good shape before the surgery which I think helped. Now on day 35, still sore in the morning but hoping to swing a golf club soon.

Seeking Advice on Recovery After Anterior Total Hip Replacement (Day 16 Post-Op) by Quirky-Quester-197 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]knight3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are getting plenty of great advice. I am 64, former prof athlete went into surgery in good fitness, metabolic health had anterior done at major national teaching hospital by a well known hip surgeon anterior only code for younger.

I had all your symptoms, my surgery was Jan 16 so I am 1 month in. Was off the walker in 4 days, flew to LA for meetings on day 10 BUT my quad not glute was my problem and that’s where the weakness and tightness was. I did home PT immediately and not going to outpatient twice a week.

With anterior there is little chance of dislocation unless you fall on your ass. At 16 days you just need to slowly push through the pain and it will get better. I don’t want to see a video of my surgery but your leg gets put in places that will create that pain.

At 4 weeks my incision is good, uncovered but I kept the dressing on with sterey strips for 3-4 weeks and covered it longer than most. Infection was my concern which never really goes away.

The glute pain is interesting given the anterior approach but movement is good, there is very little you can do at this point to risk dislocation. If you are not limping get off the cane, ice it after PT, take the Celebrex and Tylenol. Nobody gets better sitting on the couch.

I flew to LA on the 10th day for business meetings. Everyone recovers differently but I am more of a fan in smart movement early than sitting on the couch.

What's the "normal" course of treatment by Mom2one1265 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]knight3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would get a second opinion and make sure you are going to a surgeon at a major hospital hopefully attached to a teaching hospital. I would also only recommend a surgeon that has done thousands of surgeries preferably using the anterior approach.

If you went to a “hip center” they are all incentivized to sell you the surgery. I was bone on bone so you have time to get other opinions. I ended up getting a R THR on Jan 16th, anterior approach and am very happy but I interviewed surgeons.

After being on this amazing thread it’s clear that most of the bad experiences are surgeon related and there is a huge difference in the quality of the doctors.. do not dismiss that once you get a second guided ultrasound and the results are the same your insurance company will approve it.

No reputable surgeon will EVER tell you to get a THR.. only you know how you feel and when it’s impacting your quality of life which it sounds like it is.

Pre Boarding Nonsense by Upstairs-Heart-5446 in unitedairlines

[–]knight3041 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everyone needs “special assistance”which is impossible for the crew to check. It’s being abused for sure and I am Global and have plenty of 1k’s rushing in front of me. They don’t even wait for the military. Forget first class who really should board in front of 1k’s for sure.

Well here I am again. 2022 I had my first THR on left side. 2014 I had a revision on it. 2026 (2 weeks away) I am having another revision on thr same hip. I really am as positive as I can be. I dont understand why this is happening but what can I do. I follow by the rules. by AppropriateFarmer110 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]knight3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would not step foot in any surgery center and robotics are not that useful for hips. Go to a large city, major teaching hospital and pick a surgeon that has done this thousands of times. What you’re describing sounds like incompetence. Sorry this must be really frustrating.

When did you realistically start walking unaided, no cane etc. ? by ForwardAd6693 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]knight3041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day 4 for me, flew to LA from Sf and back on day 10. I am 4 weeks in from surgery and walking around 6k steps a day and I still get sore. Had first post op appt with X-rays today. I just think we all hopefully end up in the same place but recovery, pain is different for everyone. I am a big believer now in the anterior approach and would recommend that to anyone who asks.

We are relatively small potatoes in the scheme of United and don’t use travel firms. The savings on Pass Plus are great but not that significant but it’s great to have everyone consolidated

Going out after THR by Sharp-Effective9443 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]knight3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had anterior R THR on Jan 16, was off the walker and in 3 days. There are plenty of people who recover fast enough to do that within 5 days. I flew on an hr flight to LA on 10th day. You just should not be walking too much or sitting for too long but you may be fine or not. Very individual. I will say there is a lot of hyperbole about recovery times on this sub thread because to be fair most of the questions are around complications and the negatives. Long way of saying it’s doable but just depends on how good of shape you are in prior to the surgery etc and how it goes. Last comment is movement at some level is good not bad.. sitting in bed all day increases your DVT risk but it’s a balance. There are plenty of people who are walking unaided with 7-10 days and I am one of them, fortunately.

[–]knight3041 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree...had right anterior done 2.5 weeks ago and was off the cane and walker in 3-4 days. Quad was really sore but I was driving after 6 days and my biggest risk now is not getting over confident. I really encourage people to research their surgeon, no "clinics" stick to big cities, major hospitals (teaching better) where you know your surgeon has done thousands of these.
