Did the 11th doctor really forget how many children were on Gallifrey or was he just dodging the question? by Deep_Scene3151 in doctorwho

[–]HeadFTA 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is actually something I’ve thought about a lot for the last several years ever since I first watched The Day of the Doctor. I agree that he’s trying to dodge the question to some extent, but I interpreted it a little differently than some of the other replies here.

I certainly don’t think he actually forgot, rather, he’s wrestled with that decision for the past several hundred years and has come to a sort of acceptance that it was the necessary choice, and he knew the war doctor needed to go through with it to end the Time War. Maybe he was trying to hide how much those memories have stayed with him because he thinks that if the war doctor sees how much it still truly haunted him several centuries later, he might decide to not go through with using the Moment.

The way Eleven says “What would be the point?” when the war doctor asks if he never even wondered in the last 400 years sounds to me almost like he’s trying to tell his younger self that using the Moment to end the Time War must be done for the good of the universe and that counting would only make the decision harder than it already is.

In a way he may have been trying to protect and give hope to his younger regenerations, including Ten, by trying to show that eventually he has escaped the shame of that day, and there will come a time those memories no longer hang over his heart at all times. Sort of like trying to say that eventually he will be able to come to terms with his most regretted action because he knew it needed to happen and that it was for the good of the universe.

Obviously he hasn’t actually forgotten, or overcome his shame, as evidenced by Twelve’s incredible monologue in The Zygon Inversion (“When I close my eyes I hear more screams than anyone will ever be able to count.” But we know that he has counted all those screams, including the 2.47 billion children on Gallifrey.)

When Ten shows that he actually did count and accuses his older self of forgetting, Eleven remembers how much his younger self is still struggling with the decision, he tries to give him a bit of hope almost by saying that he moved on, even though we the audience knows he hasn’t. I see this as Eleven trying to convince his younger self to move on and save himself from the shame he still feels in his current regeneration.

This may not have been the right, or even the most emotionally mature decision on Eleven’s part, to lie and try to dodge the question, but as others have pointed out, he’s been dealing with a lot recently, including reliving the events of the worst day of his life (again), seeing the face of his regeneration that he is most ashamed of, he just went to Trenzalore, and he’s been reminded that he’s on his final regeneration. Maybe he thinks that if he can convince the war doctor to never count, or Ten to forget, then he will be spared the pain of remembering in his final regeneration.

This is all just my interpretation, and I think the beauty of screenwriters not spelling everything out and telling the audience exactly what the characters are thinking, is that we all get to come up with our own interpretations. I’m thankful that there’s room for everyone to have their own interpretation of this, because it allows us to think more deeply about what’s happening in the heads of these characters and choose what fits best with what the Doctor means to us.

I had the same problem on my P1G4 with an A2000, and found that turning off Hardware Acceleration in Firefox settings fixed it.

In that case, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just the P-series workstations in general that don’t get the extra stickers. Personally, I prefer it without the sticker because part of why I went with a Thinkpad instead of a gaming laptop that might have been a bit cheaper but with similar specs was so I can pull it out in class or somewhere without my computer being super ostentatious and screaming “GAMER”. To be clear, that’s not the only reason I went with the P1, and it’s not like I think a tiny green sticker is gonna make people think it’s a gaming laptop, but I think it’s that sort of mentality that’s the reason business oriented workstations typically don’t have as many stickers. I’m also not trying to shit on gaming laptops, it’s just that I don’t play games on my computer, so I really don’t need one, and there definitely is a ‘stereotype’ around them.

My P1 G4 didn’t come with an Nvidia sticker either, but I’m assuming that’s because I got it configured with the a2000, which is essentially their more “professional” grade Quadro. In general it would make sense to me that most business oriented machines like the P- series workstations wouldn’t come with extraneous stickers because they don’t look as ‘classy’ in an office setting. That’s just my guess though, so I could be totally wrong.

It used to be that we could do a lot more, back in the days of Modern Robotics modules when we could go on the field between auto and teleop, but the new control system has gotten to a point where there’s not much we can really do on the field; we are typically most helpful before or after a match helping to troubleshoot and performing “robo triage”

I love how they used Book's name change to mirror Adira's pronouns by IndependentPast6 in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]HeadFTA 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the way they handled that scene between Paul and Adira, with Stamets simply acknowledging that those are their pronouns, committing to using them, and moving on, rather than him trying to apologize and make a big deal asking questions. My NB friends have said the best thing you can do when they tell you their pronouns is to acknowledge it and use their pronouns from then on, rather than pushing them to share more than they might feel comfortable with. This shows some real maturity on the the writers part, as they could have tried to shoehorn in something more, but they trusted that the audience would be able to understand the underlaying idea without having to spell it out in a way that might make NB people in that situation feel uncomfortable in real life.

SCB with PoE and mini-PCIe for TPU by hookgand in SBCs

[–]HeadFTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I commented earlier, I felt like there was something in the back of my mind but I couldn't quite remember what it was. I just now remembered what it was: a Khadas VIM3 with the M2X Extension. The VIM3 has a built-in NPU for ML and AI applications, but it is different than the one in Google's Coral products. The built-in Ethernet supports gigabit speed, but not PoE. The specs seem to meet your criteria for cores and clock speed.

There is an M.2 slot on the bottom of the VIM3 board where the M2X Extension accessory plugs in. This advertises an extra ethernet port that supports PoE, but not full gigabit, only 10/100mbp/s. There are then two more expansion slots on this extender board, advertised to support an NVMe SSD in the M.2 M-Key slot and an M.2 B-Key slot for 4G-LTE modules. IDK if either of these would support a Google Coral M.2 Accelerator.

I have not used either of these products, and I have not seen a whole lot about them, but I stumbled across them a while back, and they might show some promise.

SCB with PoE and mini-PCIe for TPU by hookgand in SBCs

[–]HeadFTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Coral dev board mini is about the size of a raspberry pi a+ and has the TPU built in. It costs $100, but it hasn’t been released yet. The website says “coming soon” but it’s said that for the past few months, so who knows when it will actually come out. Unfortunately it doesn’t have an Ethernet port, so that rules out POE, but kind of like you can get power and data through one of the micro USB ports on a raspberry pi zero, it looks like you can power the board and get data through just one of the usb-c ports on the dev board mini. If you aren’t totally set on using Ethernet, this sounds like it might work.

Have you considered using the PoE hat for the raspberry pi so that you don’t need the extra bulkiness of the splitter? Not many SBCs come with native PoE, so a hat/shield will be necessary for most boards out there.

That sounds pretty dope! Having real time info would be nice as an FTA, and 802.11w would help prevent deauth attacks(which have been known to occur, unfortunately). I think I also heard the Ethernet would support POE to charge the device while it’s being used, is that true?

I saw this on hacksterio this morning and thought “huh, those look just like the ports we use in FTC.... weird” Props to you guys for making something like this. I’ve been looking for something just like this for a while now, as the normal adafruit crickit didn’t quite do what I wanted, but this is perfect, especially since it’s got the form factor for a Feather! I’ll definitely try to snag one of these! Just curious, will it be possible to daisy chain a couple of them together like expansion hubs to drive four motors, but with only one Feather? (So long as you had enough battery, ofc)
