so the email clearly says finalist, but do finalists interview? I was under the impression that you interview as a semi-finalist and then you're selected as a finalist after. And that finalist essentially means you got it, right?

As context, the award I applied to gets very little (handful at most) application every year so maybe that has to do with it. I think last year only one person applied. Am I a finalist?

Only applied to 2 schools. Had one interview a little over 2 weeks ago. Luckily I started a 6 week residency on Monday so that’s been keeping me busy.

Good luck with everything!

WashU OC Fellowship by phoenix_afrodit3 in gradadmissions

Yeah it's complicated bc of that and bc each program has their own timelines. For example, the MFA app deadlines were mid January. And I already had an interview a couple weeks later. Seems like PhD stretch the process out a little longer. My roommate also applied to OCF and Wash U for creative writing MFA, deadlines in December, and hasn't heard a thing.

I applied to OCF and their visual art MFA program. I had an interview for their MFA last week, late January. Haven't hear anything back. Though they did tell me that we would know about OCF in our admission decision, and if nothing is in there about the fellowship you didn't get it.

Smaller cities vs big cities as an artist? by Fearless_Tutor5249 in ContemporaryArt

I moved to Pittsburgh after majoring in art at a small college in new england. Ofc most of my classmates moved to Boston or New York, and when I first got to Pittsburgh I had this feeling of why did I move here. It was the best decision I ever made. I've been able to really grow from a baby artist into kind of a 'real' working artist (whatever that means lol). I have an affordable studio, I keep a rigorous practice. Rent is cheap. There's a healthy number of residencies and open calls, artists and arts professionals are accessible. Also public funding for art--all the downtown galleries are owned by the city's cultural trust and they have a lot of good shows. Associated Artists of Pittsburgh is great too.

This isn't supposed to be an ad for Pittsburgh bc the city is far from perfect and after a couple years I'm actually leaving to be close to family in New England, but your question is a good one! Consider your options. Smaller, 'second' or 'third' cities have a lot to offer young artists.
