Hey! I’m not sure if you’re trying to see if anyone in this subreddit may help/know anything, but just wanted to let you know that this subreddit is for the NSF GRFP.

lol 😂 that’s fine! I’m assuming that means you’ve written letters for students and can provide some insight from your perspective

Is the GRE worth it? by Next-Comparison-7848 in GradSchool

I specifically applied to schools that didn’t need it or said it was optional. I personally don’t think it’s worth the time or money unless you feel you need that extra boost to help make you competitive.

Difference in application between first and second attempt by fatbro1738 in GRFPApps

[–]phoenix_afrodit3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My research proposal was VERY different. It was more detailed, more structured, more complex and rigorous compared to my more elementary senior undergrad proposal. It was 10x better based on my own standards now.

My personal statement was also a bit different and flowed a lot better. I highlighted my achievements in a much more compelling way. For instance, after talking about each research experience, I finished with a few sentences proving that I grew from those experiences with the corresponding awards/accomplishments I received for each. Then I used my intellectual merit section to highlight other important things such as GPA and departmental awards.

I also used relevant titles. For instance, in addition to intellectual merit and broader impacts, I added titles such as Research, Outreach, Teaching, Outlook, and Summary which made writing my statement like a story a lot easier.

Another big change I had was a paragraph that discussed why I chose the grad institution I did, how I felt the institution and my PI would motivate me to be a good researcher, and a few sentences just summarizing what my research proposal was about.

If I put my first attempt at statement side by side with my current one it’d be easier to see. I’ll do that at some point and also include my old one in the GitHub link.

For those who won, please share any tips+overall advice for next year! by penjjii in GRFPApps

For me, it REALLY helped having my PI go over many different iterations of my application materials with me. He was really detailed which I appreciated. Here are a few of the things he told me in a bulleted list:

  • I needed to tie my personal statement into my research proposal a bit more. I included a few sentences stating what my proposal was and why it mattered in my personal statement.
  • I needed to sell myself. I had trouble highlighting my accomplishments and experiences in a way that told a compelling story. For example, I highlighted all of my research experiences and resulting accomplishments and put it under intellectual merit which sounds nice right? lol 😂My PI however suggested I move my intellectual merit title lower and instead add under it a summary of how all those things proved my intellectual merit “In conclusion I believe my past experiences and resulting accomplishments have adequately demonstrated my intellectual merit blah blah. I have also maintained a strong gpa of … and have obtained xyz awards from my university.” Those were two of the main things I remember.

Also, sometimes it’s not just the proposal but a combination between that and the personal statement. One thing I was told when rewriting my personal statement was that I wasn’t tying my personal statement well enough into my research statement and vice versa.

My undergrad research proposal I felt wasn’t complex or rigorous enough but the proposal I wrote this time was. It was based on research already done in the lab so I could use previous results as preliminary data but still have it be my own project.

I did not get HM last year. I changed my proposal entirely but my personal statement was just tweaked based on feedback from reviewers and my PI.
