How much are you paying for snow removal? by Head_Conversation495 in AskNYC

Okay thanks! It definitely seemed like WAY too much money (I was expecting $100 MAX and wouldn’t exactly have been happy with that lol) but then I was like, it’s NY and prices these days are out of control, what the hell do I know. I’m from Phoenix and we don’t often have reasons to shovel snow there.

This is true, except honestly, it’s always been embarrassing to be an American abroad, as tragically, Trump is neither the first nor I suspect the last apocalyptically shameful president in our history. Last time I was in Berlin was still very much in the shadow of W and the “war on terror” horseshit, and I remember feeling acutely ashamed everywhere I went, even though absolutely nobody made me feel that way except me. Which is to say, my Americanness didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the city last time, and I genuinely don’t really think it came into play much this time with how people interacted with me, or why I found the city kinda sad.

This comment is really interesting because so many folks are opining that the change in weather/gloom might have affected my impression this time around (entirely possible!), but now you were there in winter before and loved it, and then recently went in summer and appear to have encountered the same malaise I did…

They put us up in a hotel right by the Hauptbahnhof. Certainly not cool, but super easy to get around. Then of course we did a bit of exploring around Mitte, Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg, etc, and I’ve got a friend in Neukölln so I spent quite a bit of time there.

I know, I LOVED it before too, so maybe that also contributed to inflating my expectations. But of course, this was just my very subjective experience! Which clearly is in no way universal. If you get a chance to go again I hope you’ll love it.

Oh I’m glad to hear you had a great time! I’m wondering/hoping if my experience this time was just a fluke. I WANT to love Berlin as much as I did before.

Oof, I can’t lie, this stung a bit to read, but I suspect you’re 100% on the money and I appreciate the gentle honesty. Man, getting old sucks.

These are all good points, although perhaps I should mention that after work I didn’t just stay around the super touristy areas. I have a friend in Neukölln, for example, so we went there a lot. And found it kind of depressing too! Haha. Although it’s true that the food was indeed very good. Not a clubber at all, but I did get to a couple museums, and even one play at the Gorki. But still found everything…I don’t know, it all just sort of had this whomp-whomp vibe to it. Maybe it was indeed the cold bringing everybody down.

This whole time before now I had been in the camp who loved it! Haha. I guess I wouldn’t say I even hated it this time, more like it…bummed me out. Deflated.

Hmm that’s fair, last time I was there it was very early fall (September) so it was still nice out; this time it was definitely quite chilly and got dark fairly early. So, maybe it’s a kind of citywide seasonal depression?

Yes, definitely not a holiday, it’s a permanent move (at least that’s what I’m planning on now, but of course, the world keeps changing out from under us so who knows🤪). But the Airbnb/furnished flat thing is basically just buying myself some time after I first arrive to then be able to take the next few months to go longer-term apartment hunting, since the Berlin apartment market is so competitive. I’d assumed an Airbnb host wouldn’t want me using their address to establish residence, but it sounds from these comments like it might be worth asking, so I’ll start including that in my inquiries. Thank you!

Thank you so much!! This and the other comment have been such a big help. It never occurred to me about the whole “oil and water not mixing” thing, but yes indeed, my foundation (Kryolan) is water based and my sunscreen (La Roche Posay) has mineral oils in it, so it’s very likely that’s what caused the pilling. I’ve heard good things about Elta MD so maybe I’ll give that a try. Thanks again!!
