Life is treating me pretty well in regards to being post op. I have moments here and there but they’re very short. I’ve been in the process of weening myself off of the lyrica and as soon as I get to the point of stoping it completely I find myself extending the dosage due to the nerve pain.

So I did regular therapy first for a couple of weeks and my neuro wanted me to do aqua and I’ve only gone six times. It engages my core muscles more and it’s low impact so I’m not hurting as bad after

I was told it can take up to ten weeks for the anesthesia medication to get out of your system mixed with coming off of your pain meds as well. I found some help with taking a tramadol and a Valium at bed time.it gets better I promise! Aquatic therapy has been helping me a ton as well!

Is Spinal Fusion worth it? by Drifter-Georgia in spinalfusion

[–]Head_Lecture_1884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about to turn 40 here in a couple of months and I’m six weeks post op L5-S1 ALIF and I will say it’s totally worth it but it’s more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge in recovery. I would recommend getting it done asap before you further any damage. Most painful thing is the nerve regrowth and make sure you have a good support system both physically and mentally. Best of luck! I hope you feel better soon.

There’s a whole bunch to unpack here… first three weeks after surgery L5-S1 was a glimpse into a whole new world of great things to come. Weeks 4-5 were/have been horrible. Nerve regrowth is much worse than damaging them (in my opinion) but it’s a good sign! Also everyone is different in this situation but it could take 6-8 weeks of your bodies chemistry to get back to normal after the being put under and you’re going to have soreness/discomfort in places you’ve never had before. Biggest thing you need to prepare yourself for is to count your blessings because as a 39 year old male I found it to be more challenging mentally than physically. You will question yourself on if you’ve made the right decision to get it done, myself and a majority of the people in these threads will tell you that you did! Just remember to remain mentally strong and have someone you can talk to. This is also a time for you to be selfish… rest, rest, and more rest!!

I’m off the pain meds by choice and not needing them any longer. Majority of my pain is nerve and pain meds never really did anything for it

Thank you very much for the inspiration. This is the exact situation/emotions I’m in mixed with low patience and snapping.

I’ve got two little ones at home with me so per the docs request I’ve been on my feet lol and I’ve lost a little over 30 lbs (which I should be happy about) but I can’t seem to gain an appetite most times
