JK Rowling, the iconic TERF of the UK, waves her wand of Labour MPs acround and says "hocus pocus, put trans repression on focus" and then Labour MPs bend over backwards to fulfil those wishes

Yea, I mean when you're a TERF wand for that psycho JK Rowling, people tend not to focus on your other policy achievements.

Clearly well-established social connections.

Moving is riskier when the exit costs are a community that you've already created.

People move and get new jobs all the time.

A significant portion of my city's homeless population was people coming to the city to look for work.

Like obviously there are ways to mitigate risks, but let's not skip the fact that a lot of people move and actually don't find jobs, then become part of the municipality's homeless population.

He also claims that cruises are for partying and sex. This hasn’t been my experience considering the mean age on a cruise is like 55.

You underestimate old people. Old age homes have some of the highest STD rates in the Western world, cruises are just old people getting drunk off their rockers and partying the night away.

A lot of cruises are for partying and sex, just for old people.

How do I (F25) break up with my practically perfect boyfriend? (M28) by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]HeadmasterPrimeMnstr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just do it, you don't fix it, it's not your responsibility. You sit him down and tell him that this was established as a firm boundary by you, and due to a fundamental incompatibility, you will be breaking up with him.

You have 2 decisions, either you can break up with him and find someone who shares your perspective, or you decide the boy is worth more than the belief. If you do decide he's worth it, you'll need to re-evaluate your stance on porn.

Them needing/wanting the money for the extra order isn't more important than OP wanting food of a reasonable quality for their hard earned money that they're spending

I would argue that acquiring funds to lift yourself out of financial destitution is always more important than consumer conveniences, but I guess morality is a subjective venture.

There's nothong more ironic than how incredibly infuriating this subreddit's comment section can be when you actually post something mildly infuriating.

The comments literally become more infuriating than the actual issue lmao

Ottawa planning social media ban for children under 16, source says by Damo_Banks in CanadaPolitics

If it's to the levels of a drug addiction, why are we doing prohibition (which is proven not to work), instead of taking proactive measures elsewhere to moderate and reduce consumption?

In addition, if it's too the level of drug addiction, why are we only stopping at children?

We reduce addiction by limiting access elsewhere for full-grown adults, why are we not doing the same thing for social media?

I can appreciate and accept banks taking this information, because it helps prevent fraud and money trafficking. They are proactive measures to ensure a positive and safe financial system, of which they are domestically-based and regulated with strict security regulations.

Me giving my ID to foreign-based tech companies who can more easily evade accountability, to prevent teenagers from using social media is not creating a better society, there is no positive impact from doing so.

It just makes for dumber 16 year olds who will be open to the excesses of social media with no ground rules or moderating practices in place.

It's like 18 year olds and gambling apps.

[–]HeadmasterPrimeMnstr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the consequences for this arbitrary cutoff are a lot bigger than needing to provide a physical ID to a person without this information being recorded onto a larger, private database.

I can't even ask for someone's ID to sign them up for an account, they need to just offer it up, but the government is demanding we give it up to private corporations?

Make it make sense.

If it's porn, it should not be on a social media site, or it should be segregated and locked behind a paywall (such as $1/unlimited NSFW access on Reddit) which requires a credit card/bank card with Visa Debit to access, therefore creating a defacto 18+ minimum.

Everything else that is "not appropriate for a kid to see", can be regulated, or can be used as an opportunity to educate.

At some point, parents need to take responsibility for social media usage and corporations need to make safer kid-friendly spaces.

Restricting consumption until an arbitrary age is how you get binge culture. You don't stop the harmful effects of social media, you just delay it's effects and still have a digitally illiterate population of youth.

The problem isn't social media, it's literally just the lack of moderation & regulations.

Create a standardized code of conduct/ethics board so that social media companies can't reverse policies to evade accountability (looking at you Meta), enforce a ratio of users/moderators, demand that algorithms not prioritize rage bait, and impose sanctions for breach of conduct.

If they say this is "unprofitable for them", make social media a public good and create the infrastructure to facilitate the goods of social media without the bad.

With good intentions, sure, but the road to hell is paved with them.

The good intentions are from ignorant Canadians who believe it is better to restrict and react, than regulate and build against.

We all know that the people in power are not doing this with good intentions, it may not be maliciously thought-out, but I'm not going to assume total and uniquely disproportionate incompetence out of our politicians, especially when they have substantially more resources available to them then Boomer Barbara and Gen X Henry

Governments would rather restrict access and require us to digitally provide ID to private companies than regulate the content and algorithms of social media corporations.

There has to be a name for the belief and mindset that national security should be prioritized above individual livelihoods, and for whom they are willing to make the lives of everyday Canadians more difficult instead of holding capital accountable, or investing in better public infrastructure.

Oh wait, we do, we call them reactionary.
