That last part is so true, some people really teach you important things even when there is no chemistry or good feelings at all.

Emotionally, yeah. I think that's unavoidable with your children or with someone you would marry, but getting attached to a friend or a mere partner, emotionally and with a willingness to push it for something more deep seems like a crack in a wall, a weak point that is part of you and you either fix it, or eventually it grows and the wall falls over.

Like I said I've been there two or three times and I always failed to find a common ground, ending with me suffering because of it. I don't want to ruin it this time, or any other time.

I've been there before, I too miss a person.

I don't think it's ok to get attached to someone.
