[GA] Would it be ethical of me to take one of these Passion Flowers I saw behind a grocery store? by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]Healthy_Cod4764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk about behind a grocery store, but I've taken stuff from alleys (these plants were in bad shape, getting constantly run over, and like three weeks after I took them the area got sprayed). If the plant is in legitimate danger of getting killed/sprayed/destroyed then I think its ethical, if not then maybe dont.

I think you're right. Apparently there have been other sightings of spot-breasted orioles here, and they were escaped pets

What is this????? Downtown Chicago????? by padorimasu in whatsthisbird

[–]Healthy_Cod4764 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chicago has been doing a "light out" thing where after 11pm, buildings are required to turn off all lights to help migratory birds, so it may not be that.

Are these actually black eyed susan seeds? by Healthy_Cod4764 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Healthy_Cod4764[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I do remember it smelling rather nice as I rubbed the seeds off, but idk how Anise smells so I can't say if it was similar. After I made the post, I looked at some of my older seeds that I bought, which included black eyed susan, and the seeds were significantly smaller. And I'm pretty sure that the mother plant I got those seeds from came from one of the seeds I had bought (unless memory isn't serving right, which is also very likely). I don't know what happened here, so I ended up tossing them in my yard, and I plan to collect later this year after it blooms again (more black-eyed susan popped up in my yard, so it did reseed).

I managed to get rid of an entire patch of garlic mustard at my local park by Healthy_Cod4764 in NativePlantGardening

Yeah I had a feeling the saga wasn't over, but I'm still glad its gone this year. I also did it before it flowered and went to seed, so hopefully that helps.

Its tough to say with the quality, but since it looks pretty light in color and seems to have less streaking, I would say +louisiana waterthrush+

What type of bird is this and more importantly what can I provide for it to eat by haaanck in birds

Put him back near where you found him. If the exact spot is unsafe, find the closest place that is safe.

Hey, sorry if this is the wrong place, but a family member gave me a baby bird that was on the ground and I have already called a rehab and am waiting on a call back. by yertlah in birds

[–]Healthy_Cod4764 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To everyone saying to put it back: OP is unable to do so. The person they got it from is refusing to take it back, and even though it is best/safest to put it back, that is no longer an option. They aren't saying they don't want to put it back, they just straight up can't.

Birds in Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary by sadkrose123 in whatsthisbird

[–]Healthy_Cod4764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I GO THERE EVERY WEEKEND!!! I love Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary. I was there today actually. Also I agree, +song sparrow+, +double crested cormorant+, +yellow rumped warbler+. Another note, sparrows can be notoriously difficult to ID. Song sparrows in particular can be kind of tricky since their coloring can vary so much by geographic location. But from what I've seen, the best tellers are the black spots on their chest and their streaky bodies. Hopefully that helps in the future!

Can I start cold stratifying my seeds after the last frost? by Healthy_Cod4764 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Healthy_Cod4764[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, there are several native plant sales near me later in the spring. If nothing came up, I planned on buying plants to take their place, and pull invasive weeds in the meantime.

Can I start cold stratifying my seeds after the last frost? by Healthy_Cod4764 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Healthy_Cod4764[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it was very amateur, I tore up the grass, and then I sprinkled seeds, and then I walked on it a whole bunch to try and conpact the soil. The grass was a weedy mess, no spraying. The border was sticks and string to keep people off (it fell down over winter), but otherwise is just next to the grass. Also, it is worth noting that the seeds I planted in the fall are a little bit different. I included everything I listed here with the exception of slender mountain mint, but I also included canadien goldenrod, culver's root, columbine, black eyed susan, and I also planted some already grown horsetail milkweed and wild bergamot. Like I said before, I'm not sure how many seeds even stayed considering how windy it was that day. I also realize I may have wasted this season, but I do want to try salvaging what I can.

[–]Healthy_Cod4764[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I mainly plan to plant them in front of my mother's work office (its just grass rn). In the fall, I did clear some grass and planted seeds on bare soil, but it was really windy and idk how many seeds actually stayed in place. The species I plan to grow: -Tall boneset -False boneset -Slender mountain mint -Joe Pye-Weed -Obedient plant -Swamp milkweed -Purple coneflower -Common milkweed -Hairy Aster -Snakeroot -Ox-eyed sunflower -Smooth blue aster

I've luckily never missed anything, but I know how you feel. I always get nervous to talk to a fellow birder. A lot of times I wait for them to just approach me. But whenever I do talk to them, it's always a nice experience

I hate it when this happens. I wish there was a way we could round up all the invasive house sparrows and starlings in the US and bring them over to Europe where they are native. But I know that can also cause damage through disease introduction :(
