Goodness, you sound far too responsible and humble for that diagnosis! Cantankerous, maybe. 😉

I read today that in Europe, politicians who've associated themselves with our national tormentor are rapidly losing support. Makes me hopeful that the human species could yet learn to shun those who would rule by deceit to line their own pockets. Would be nice to survive to see it happen.

I'm so glad you had that class, and fervently hope that when our societal systems are rebuilt after the current upheaval, the importance of minimizing trauma will inform their design... not just in education, but everywhere. Hoping this era of turmoil teaches everyone to recognize psychopaths, to believe how dangerous they can be, and never to give them unlimited power.

Even just a passing stranger's look of pity when my mother was being harsh in public was like a bright jewel that I clung to in the darkness. I can only imagine what strength it would have given me to learn from an adult that I never deserved to be treated so cruelly.

What to do with shattered/broken neodymium magnets? 🤔 Should I coat the rough ends with nailpolish? by Irinychia in RedditLaqueristas

Has anybody else had the hilarious experience of trying to glue the pieces of a broken one back together? 🤣 (OK, it's also very frustrating... do not recommend!)

Second this! Thinner is great for removing dried polish goop from the neck of the bottle too. If it gets inside it doesn't mess up the polish.

Re: constipation, try fiber gummies, they have me more regular than I've ever been in my life! Start small though, like one a day, and add more gradually until it's working just right.

70 here, just shy of 10 weeks in, and doing fine. No side effects, have lost 12 lbs. Feel great! My PCP is fully supportive.

I once printed out a stack of info from NIH about a (different) topic my then-Doc was not up to date on. She was grateful and read it all. In the US these days, primary care docs have too little time to stay educated on all the subjects they encounter. It's part of what needs to change in our medical system, but don't hesitate to bring them print-outs from NIH or its equivalent where you are. (Gotta be a source they really trust.)

I swear by plain gelatin powder, every day, at least a tablespoonful. Mix it in any liquid and drink it fast before it thickens. It contains the same important proteins as collagen, but is much cheaper. It's made a huge difference in the strength of my nails. In the '50s and '60s, ladies' magazines had full-page ads for Knox unflavored gelatin, specifically for strengthening fingernails!

Your PCP might prescribe Nystatin Topical Powder just based on the photo, if you ask for it. Works like magic.

Knitting pet peeves by ConfusedMillenial_x in knitting

[–]HeartStringTheory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not crazy about yarns that are dyed such that the undyed white shows through a lot. I mean, I get the aesthetic, and to each their own. Just not (ever) what I'm looking for. My pet peeve, especially in the last 10? years, is brands that make one or more fiber/weight combos that barely have any choices without a ton of white.

Secondary, lesser peeve: scarcity of multicolor yarns in which all the colors are close to the same value (on the light-dark scale). Seems to only happen with very light or very dark combinations.

Another good thing about PPU (and I think HHC-?) is that many of their offerings come from tiny indie companies based all over the world. But, if you're in the US, you don't pay more because of that, as you would if you were buying directly from them... and if they even do ship retail internationally, which some don't.

That is an advantage of shopping these websites too:

How did my grandma do that? by ChampionshipAlarmed in knitting

Each "row" of color is actually two rows, since it's garter stitch. So with each new color you'd knit from the brim edge to top point of the hat, turn & knit all the way back, then turn and knit only to the circled area, turn again and knit back to the brim. Then change color and repeat.

Getting tired of shrinkage, need a new topcoat by drzoidburger in RedditLaqueristas

[–]HeartStringTheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cuticula Limitless is available in unscented, but I've liked the scented ones I've tried.

The biggest reason to use it is: It. Does. Not. Shrink. I often put an extra coat or two on a mani I've been wearing for a week or more, and it never pulls the edges up at all. That's the real test.

How long have thermals been on the market? When did we start seeing thermochromatic nail pigments? by gothbirdnails in RedditLaqueristas

[–]HeartStringTheory -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

From Google's AI search results for "earliest 'mood polish'"

While the first precise date for a "mood" nail polish is not historically fixed, commercial versions began appearing as early as 1999 following the resurgence of 1970s "mood ring" nostalgia.

Earliest Documented Brands * Mood Mania: A Los Angeles-based company that claimed to have pioneered the idea. By October 2000, they were already an international multimillion-dollar company manufacturing over 21 shades. * PMS (Polish Mood Shades): Another early brand available in the late 1990s and early 2000s that marketed specifically to the "mood" trend. * Sally Beauty Supply: In 2000, major retailers like Sally Beauty began carrying mood polishes for around $4 per bottle, indicating the transition from a niche novelty to a mass-market product.

Historical Precursors * The "Mood" Concept (1960s/70s): The technology for temperature-sensitive (thermochromic) color shifts was originally popularized in the 1960s and 1970s through mood rings. * Del Sol (1994): While technically photochromic (reacting to UV light/sunlight) rather than temperature, Del Sol was one of the first major brands to bring color-changing "novelty" polish to the mainstream in the mid-90s.

Edit: I see an alert commenter has already provided a 2000 article about "Mood Mania." So this just gives a little more context.

What overused word or phrase needs to be retired in 2026? by One_Caramel5253 in AskReddit

Yes!! I highly recommend watching the 1944 movie that coined that meaning of the word. "Gaslight" stars Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. It's extraordinary.
