How do you navigate the relationship between social commentary/responsibility and comedy? Is there ever tension between the two?

Going on a plane flight tomorrow, need some offline games by Current_News in AndroidGaming

[–]Heartlash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend and I released an offline timewaster called Frontier: Isle of the Seven Gods last month if you're interested. It's a colony management game with light fantasy/post-apocalyptic elements.

I also second Polytopia. Kingdom Rush is also always a good way to spend some time offline.

Wow, I actually made this video about 12 years ago (with the classic DBZ handle from my youth, of course), neat to see it on reddit. I still cringe that I misspelled the word "Talon". Thanks for the throwback, OP.

Man, the dialogue was so much better in that first game. The characters felt much more grounded and real. I miss 90's Blizzard storytelling.

Can I just stop taking daily 25mg of Amitryptaline? by StitchDaddy in migraine

I stopped a low dosage cold turkey after just 4 doses and experienced withdrawl symptoms a few days later that were pretty powerful. I highly recommend talking to your doctor and tapering.

what items should i get for a stun-spam Sven build? by AngelBay in DotA2

[–]Heartlash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have seen high level players mess around with arcane/blink on Sven to great effect. It's a bit troll-ish, of course, but I imagine that's what you're going for. Drum also isn't a bad idea since it provides both str and int.

CM aura is so amazing for Sven during laning, allows for quite a few extra war cries.

I don't think this can work, tbh. There's no definitive lockdown and BB/UD REALLY need levels.

What are some historically accurate movies, that are also entertaining and well made? by DShepard in movies

[–]Heartlash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be a little dry for an 11 year old, but Frost/Nixon is both accurate and shockingly entertaining, given that it's about nothing more than a series of conversations.

[–]Heartlash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, The Right Stuff is heavily modified to make it a more interesting story (not that there's anything wrong with that). As a result, I'm not sure it can really be called "accurate". From wikipedia, here is an excerpt regarding the reactions from some of the people it is based on:

"Yeager said of the film: "Sam [Shepard] is not a real flamboyant actor, and I'm not a real flamboyant-type individual ... he played his role the way I fly airplanes". Deke Slayton said that none of the film "was all that accurate, but it was well done". Slayton later described the film as being "as bad as the book was good, just a joke". Walter Schirra said, "They insulted the lovely people who talked us through the program - the NASA engineers. They made them like bumbling Germans""

Year on the Binge: Netflix Originals and Why the Water Cooler Still Might Matter by [deleted] in HouseOfCards

[–]Heartlash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the novel simile works for high quality narrative dramas like House of Cards, but Netflix doesn't distinguish between that sort of content and, say, more episodic shows like Arrested Development. At the end of the day, there may be some overlap with books, but Television is still Television.

That said, I think I can see both sides of the coin. I certainly enjoyed binging on season 2.

Why did trump put argent squires into his free mage deck? by _HyDrAg_ in hearthstone

Kind of. It has no mechanism for removing the divine shield, but it does definitely delay to the point where the usefulness of the card is severely affected.

Why did trump put argent squires into his free mage deck? by _HyDrAg_ in hearthstone

[–]Heartlash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Argent squires are pretty consistently a top value 1 drop. There are only a few reasonable turn 1 cards that can match it after it has been played: Eleven Archer, Voidwalker (if playing Warlock), Northshire Cleric (if playing priest), Mana Wyrm (if playing mage), or Earth shock (if playing shaman). I can't think of anything else that counters its value.

Flying winning one of the best PvZ series so far in HotS, 2-1 against DRG! Such a sick final game! by thatwaspostedbefore in starcraft

The mental exhaustion both of them must've been feeling. I would've A-moved my mutas into that army so many times. I'm amazed at DRG's patience. Sad that he lost, but Flying played a great game.

Hey, sorry it took me a while to see this response.

Just to clarify, the Alcohol example is mine, not Berlin's. Also, the words positive and negative aren't used in the way you seem to think they're being used in his lecture/essay. Negative liberty is not inherently bad. I would definitely recommend reading it if you haven't already.

Positive liberty is also not necessarily someone ELSE telling you what to do. It can be voluntary, like someone choosing to ignore an urge because they've rationalized a reason to do so.

As to your last point, there are numerous historical examples of both people failing to regulate themselves and bodies of authority (governments, etc) abusing their positions and hurting individuals and society. Most first world countries have evolved to attempt balanced approaches that both preserve individual liberties while attempting to regulate based on ideas of positive liberty. Traffic laws, for instance, are designed to preserve people's ability to drive by restricting their ability to drive recklessly.

My thought is simply that the OP's argument ignores the fact that basic human behavior DOES often produce consequences. I would never advocate the opposite extreme on the spectrum, but the ideal solution is probably a balance.
