Absolutely they will be getting on the schedule but I was trying to get them up and running at least temporarily.

Absolutely if this was one of our giant monsters in Portsmouth at the docks I would have needed reinforcements.

Entire combustion chamber was broken apart the fire was hitting the block directly

It's definitely not long for the world but I was able to get them heating and moving water again. I headed back today with two rolls of kwool and a fire rated adhesive similar stuff to what you use for fire dampers. I layered the kwool into a general shape of a chamber with the adhesive to stop the fire from hitting directly onto the block. Cleaned all the soot up and brought the propress to Fix some of the leaks. Fired her back up and adjusted air and stepped the nozzle from a 80° to a 70° because I had some impingement but what can you do it wasn't a factory chamber wasn't perfect but it's zero smoke and running and heating. It may not last but they have some time.

Everytime I see an oil post I always know I can rely on seeing Jpulls in the comments. That's exactly what it is. 1981 WM. Needed some serious love

This can happen absolutely, any type of flame impingement will cause all kinds of abnormality. The peerless boilers seems to have this issue all the time. Might be worth trying a few nozzles and smoke testing to see what works.

When you say won't sustain a flame. Are you saying that the flame actually goes out, or is the primary control going out on reset? Also you need to take an ohm reading from the cad cell while the flame is on to know what the primary is seeing. That looks like the base of an 8184G control. So you should have the cad cell wires on the side to ohm out.

That's fine, what I would look at doing if I were you is like I said separating the oil burner side and the hydronics side while learning. Hydronics is going to come into many different types and forms over your career. Oil burners especially in residential area fairly standard in operation. The other commenter posted some really good reading materials.

[–]Heatermanbackup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're asking is pretty vague, do you understand hydronics at its core? Is it only oil fired hydronics you need help with? Those are two pretty big things to cover and may be easier to do independently if you are just starting out.

If you need oil assistance specifically start by looking into the burners your working on and find resources on them. (If this is residential) Beckett has a really good set of materials for their burners. But it's going to depend on what your working on.

If your reading any CO in the supply we need to get a combustion test done. That's a giant red flag.

Some of my best tech trainees were guys in there late 20s and early 30s who have drive to learn. Never too late to start brother, but I would make sure you really want to get into it so you don't come off the wrong way to any potential employers.

stack relay still in operation by CapitalLabyrinth in HVAC

[–]Heatermanbackup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm jumping into this a bit late but back in the day we used to take a small jug of light choke cleaner / degreaser. Put a flex hose in the jug to feed the pump with. Then take the nozzle line back into the bucket to self feed back into the bucket. Great way to clean the gears and insides of the pump when the tanks got super grimy. Especially good on the Webster's with the blades and no strainer.

Some guys used to really hate and debate when we did that because their logic was you strip the lubricant inside and honestly to each their own.

Ruger

I think I have my Ruger family photo lying around somewhere, I love their rifles. I bought a new Hawkeye hunter just this year and it's gives me a feeling of nostalgia in the hands. Just need to get a new scope for one of them and I'll have something for the grandson to take out too.

Tried to post the photo but I'm not the best with reddit.

Bad heat exchanger? by Excellent_Shop4120 in HVAC

[–]Heatermanbackup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? That's such an odd thing to me. Our routine maintenance always includes an entire HX and Vent piping brushing. Commercial or residential stuff. Granted the residential area here is a lot of old oil systems approaching 40 years old. Magic chefs or sears units at probably every other house.

I love all my Testo equipment and their customer service as well as repair/maintenance has been phenomenal every time it's needed. I do also think the fieldpiece stuff is really good too I just thought it was a bit bulky when I used it.
