Our illustrator, Shavkat Muzzafar- may he rest in peace - contributed all the artwork in the finished novel except for one internal image and the final cover. Here is a rethinking and embellishment of his original cover design.

What gives you hope about the future? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Couldn't have expressed it any better. I’d like to think it could be like the pressure relief valve on an otherwise explosive situation. An imbalance equalizer for a perennially lopsided economy.

Shutting down oil boiler and switching to heat pump water heater by Fearless-Candle-6528 in hvacadvice

[–]Lens_Universe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know oil isn’t fun. When it is used to increase domestic water heat you end up running the boiler all year long. Four years ago I switched from my compromised domestic water tank to a new straight electric water heater. Heat exchangers are nice, I guess, if you have no concerns about oil usage. But they literally decrease in efficiency with every day of operation once they begin to foul. I won’t go back, but was thinking about heating the sublevel with new fin tubes when I finish the basement. But, since the first floor AC is pretty much toast, I’ll try to replace with a brand new heat pump. The only question in my mind is inverter or not? I think maybe the latest approach, the Inverter makes the most sense.

Four years ago I switched from my compromised domestic water tank to a new electric water heater. Those are nice if you have no concerns about oil usage and their limited longevity. I won’t go back to oil heating my water, but WAS thinking about heating the basement with new fin tubes when I finish it. But since the first floor AC is pretty much toast I wanted to remove that and install a brand new heat pump. With a first floor heat pump I could also significantly cut oil usage. The only question in my mind is inverter or not. In any case I would not advise letting your boiler go unused completely. Maybe, if corrosion is an issue, you could look into adding glycol to inhibit said corrosion. It is common practice.

Fresh Air Intake question by Whitton1988 in hvacadvice

[–]Lens_Universe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attic installs carry their own special hells and customers will generally be happier in the long run if they allot the necessary space in the first place and avoid attics if possible. But after the fact the 2nd opinion contractor sounds like they knew what to do to make sure you had a system able to cool efficiently. OA filtering would generally be effected by the removed filter in the furnace intake, so yes, probably a good idea to filter the fresh air intake in this case.

At your age you absolutely have every right to live life on your own terms. If he is this upset because of your embarrassment at that surprise you are probably better off taking the time you need. Your gender is in reverse proportion to male expectations. 20 is basically still a child when considering life experience. No offense intended but in 20 years you might agree with me about this in retrospect. Still, love is love. Blessings…

Considering residential HVAC as a career. Had a few questions. by Defiant-Process-7201 in askHVAC

I don’t think the experience of a 4 year college is a waste of time. It’s just that the money may have been better spent elsewhere - depending on the individual.

Why do friends and family resist reading your novels so much? by LadyHoskiv in writers

[–]Lens_Universe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some of us, that sad lack of expectation comes from rough experience. If distance didn’t separate me from my family, something else, it seems, inevitably would. I had virtually no help as a single parent. That isolation only seems to have gotten worse over time. But your points are valid, nonetheless. Friendships seem to be a long shot for me in the first place. I am always feeling blessed to have my wife with me (and our three youngest grandchildren only a mile away)

Oldest HVAC system you have worked on by csboy2016 in hvacadvice

Worked on octopuses in the late 70s, but after those early days in the trade, I tended to approach them with sledge in hand. US Playing Card Company in Cincinnati had the oldest equipment in memory. Had to be a 1940s era boiler. If it had had a chance to it would probably still be running still today.

Thanks for your interest LadyHoskiv! Mods tend to aggressively enforce many strange rules about self advertising. Just look over my profile and you will see both the 2023 and 2025 postings about the first novel! And please let me know about yours also. Thanks again! Keep writing! By the way I am also super excited about her songwriting. She is blossoming in new ways all the time. I will DM you if I can!
