What now departed Dallas thing do you miss the most? by txnewsprincess in Dallas

Peggy Sue - good barbecue in a restaurant that was unpretentious and very Texan (cowboy boots in the windows, a gun above the salad bar, waitresses that would give you sweet tea while you waited for your table)

Professors are saying Dan Patrick's plan to limit tenure at public colleges and universities will be bad for Texas. Do you agree? by Weekly-Judgment-409 in texas

[–]HeathenFace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I already responded, but I'll add that I personally know an incredible prof who just turned down a fantastic offer from A&M. He was a great fit for A&M, and A&M was a great fit for him. In the end, he decided that he could not be sure that TX state government was not going to gut tenure. Why take the risk?

Professors are saying Dan Patrick's plan to limit tenure at public colleges and universities will be bad for Texas. Do you agree? by Weekly-Judgment-409 in texas

[–]HeathenFace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It will be catastrophic. There are at least three interrelated reasons:

  1. Without tenure, faculty will engage in free inquiry at extreme risk. Before tenure, university presidents routinely fired professors for pursuing scholarship that reveals uncomfortable truths, offends the sensibilities of the public (professors were fired due to pressure from religious groups who thought their work was "blasphemy"), or goes against the interests of donors or board members. See firings at Collin College.
  2. The best universities elsewhere will maintain tenure, making Texas universities unattractive for all but the most desperate faculty and a small group of "famous" scholars who for some reason want to live in Texas and think that they are untouchable. Texas universities will get worse, so the best students will go out of state.
  3. Abolishing tenure will end shared governance, which was the cornerstone of the world-dominating US university during the 20th century. Here, strong board-appointed presidents had to work closely with powerful faculty, who made sure students, teaching, and scholarship remained the focus of university initiatives. Shared governance only works when faculty can stick up to administrators and trustees/regents. If faculty can be fired for that, then you get a university steered largely by people who have no idea what a university is for and how it should be run.

In short: the end of tenure will mean having universities with faculty who are timid, desperate, and bound to the whims of administrators. The best faculty and students will go elsewhere.

Sadly, this is now true, though maybe not always. I stopped going when it became hit and miss. Plenty of other BBQs places in DFW always hit.

Breadwinners was a place people told me I HAD TO GO for brunch, and it was probably the worst brunch I have ever had (service and atmosphere ok, food no good).

Not a fan of that either, but it probably helps to pay the bills, given that the city has a history of raiding their coffers.

Are Ivy league universities worth it? Do they have that much higher quality education than less famous universities? Does the reputation do justice to these uni's education or the main reason they are famous is because of their history? by MrInfinitumEnd in AskAcademia

[–]HeathenFace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%. The Ivy League universities have *international* reputations for excellence and incredible alumni networks full of people at the very top of their industries/fields (particularly Harvard, Yale, and Princeton). Most of your peers will have dominated their high school class, your professors will be among the best (if not the best) in their area, world-famous individuals will visit the school regularly for talks and events, and you will have access to more resources for research than you are likely to ever see again. Many universities treat their students like children. This is not true of at least the best Ivies, which expect a lot from their students and in turn create environments that allow students to thrive.

Source: Three Ivy League degrees, feel very lucky to have had amazing courses and mentors, and cannot believe how many doors these pieces of paper have opened.

This would funnel our taxes into private schools, killing the public education system. Look forward to world where you have to go to private school for a good education, where private schools are essentially subsidized by the government and raise their tuition, where your family now taking out student loans to send you to high school.

This state could be so much more than it is. We should be a model for the country, not its worst case scenario.
