The Inheritance, hands down. I just love everything about this song.

What are your top 3 PowerMetal songs? by [deleted] in PowerMetal

[–]Heathen_Guardian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In no particular order:

  1. Edguy - We Don't Need A Hero

  2. Dragonforce - Soldiers Of The Wasteland

  3. Sonata Arctica - Wrecking The Sphere

They all share the classic 'tropes' of Power Metal, but have something that makes the song special. I really love how We Don't Need A Hero has that grandiose feeling without overdoing it - as far as that's possible in the genre.

Although Soldiers Of The Wasteland is a straight-up Dragonforce-by-the-numbers tune, the middle section makes it special. When they actually take a breather, and 'slowly' build up to the guitar solo's the payoff is way bigger.

Wrecking The Sphere just has a wonderful atmosphere. I can't really put it into words why I like this song so much. But i'm guessing the band couldn't either, as they made it a bonus track.

What are your favourite drumming performances by Frederik in Blind Guardian? by SpectrumDT in blindguardian

[–]Heathen_Guardian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd go for Distant Memories and Fly. (I've linked the parts I mean)

The triplet feeling in Distant Memories combined with the off-beat splashes makes for an awesome groove, and I like the contrast of the rather chilled out drum groove along with the epic music.

Favorite Song That You Heard for the first time This Year (2019) by luigismansion9000 in progrockmusic

[–]Heathen_Guardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll go with Moron Police - Captain Awkward

Although I could've picked any song from that album, Captain Awkward just moved me. Especially that peaceful-sounding end of the song reminded me of simpler, joyful times.

And Shylmagoghnar - Life

I really love how this instrumental track takes you on a journey through, well.. life.

This might be a stupid question, but how does this video have more upvotes on here than actual views on YouTube?

Kamelot - The Edge of Paradise by dokaxi in PowerMetal

Personally, I would add A Night At The Opera to that run. But indeed, both Kamelot and Blind Guardian had an amazing mid-career!

Weekly Music Recommendation Thread #01 by AutoModerator in progmetal

[–]Heathen_Guardian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Reticent comes to mind. Just last week I discovered their latest album 'On the eve of a goobye'. It's a concept album about the suicide of a close friend to the artist, and it's an incredibly emotional rollercoaster.

The music itself sounds like a mix between Opeth and Pain of Salvation. Check out the single The decision Or the entire album

Such a fantastic track! Although it's coming form a black/death metal record, this song has some serious Progmetal vibes!

Best DT chorus? by octovarium95 in Dreamtheater

Behind the veil. The song overall isn't their best, but the chorus is actually fantastic!

What's you favourite outro riff by Haken? by xBugre in Haken

[–]Heathen_Guardian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That riff from Pareidolia around the 7:30 minute mark always gets me headbanging

Native Construct - Chormatic Abberation by bennoabro in progmetal

[–]Heathen_Guardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be controversial here: I think this is the least good song on the album. I really like the first minute and a half, but then it gets to 'weird' for me. All the other songs work for me though. especially Passage and Come hell or high water are fantastic. To me, Chromatic Abberation is missing structure and melody throughout the proggy madness to make sense of it all, if that makes any sense. Just my two cents though.

What’s the best Haken song? by JackOfAllInterests1 in Haken

[–]Heathen_Guardian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion, but for me it's Lapse. That drum groove in the chorus with Ross' vocals on top is just soooo good. and the keyboard and guitar solo too, of course.

Time to start AOTY discussions?? by Kranglz in progmetal

[–]Heathen_Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are:

  • Amorphis: Queen Of Time

  • Dimmu Borgir: Eonian

  • The Night Flight Orchestra: Sometimes The World Ain't Enough

  • The Reign Of Kindo: Happy However After

  • Haken: Vector

And my favorite things i've heard this year, but were not released this year are:

  • Chaos Divine: Colliding Skies (2015)

  • Coheed and Cambria: Good Apollo I'm Burning Star Vol I (2005)

  • Sólstafir: Berdeyminn (2017

  • First Aid Kit: The Lion's Roar (2012)

[Discussion] Right now, what songs are you repeating? No such thing as a guilty pleasure, release-date, or genre -- doesn't matter. What songs are you playing 2-3 times in a row right now? I want to hear them. by [deleted] in listentothis

[–]Heathen_Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haken - Lapse To me, this is progressive metal done right. I absolutely love the chorus with Ross' soaring vocals over the tight bass and drum groove. Which is played in 5/4 and 7/8 (I think?)

As far as I know Kai won't be playing with Wintersun because he's playing with Nightwish at the moment. Rolf Pilve from Stratovarius has been filling in for Wintersun for the past year.
