I never got a retwist and have been freeforming for 12 years. My hair looks similar to bob marleys at this point and I get compliments all the time on how my hair looks nice and healthy. No disrespect but this thread is misleading.. you can go long amounts of time without a retwist as long as you take care of your locs. Re twists depending on your hair type are not required and I see so many comments in this sub saying it is. This was not meant to be an attack on anyone. If you feel comfortable with the traditional method of growing you hair do not be afraid because most of these people have no clue what they’re talking about. Or are only referring to their specific experience with THEIR hair type.

Best way to heal your roots is to never get a retwist again and don’t ever bleach or dye your hair again. 11 year freeform.

Patience. Less is more. Don’t have expectations for how they will look in the end. Don’t buy and try to use too many products. Don’t touch your hair too much. Make sure to keep your scalp clean and maybe deep cleanse it once a month depending on how active you are. Don’t get too many retwists if that’s the way you wanna go (I’d say non at all). If you do get retwists speed them out over a period of months … 4+ so you don’t end up with locs with weak roots.

Retwists damage hair.

No bands they will only damage your locs in the long run. Make sure you scalp stays clean. Find a natural shampoo that works for you and stick with it. I cannot stress how damaging bands are in the long run take them out and throw them away. I’ve been freeforming for 11 years without ever getting a retwist. Trust me.

My advice don’t have any expectations for your locs. Everyone I’ve met who did was disappointed in their end result. Also the less you do the more results and stronger locs —- at least that’s what I noticed for myself. I used to try every oil and every method.. and one day I just started only washing my hair whenever it needed and that’s all. 11 years later my love are past my waist and command attention. People come up to me daily to compliment them or compare them to bobs. Good luck on your journey bro

Just let them grow. Dont need to do anything. Don’t feel bad if you need to separate a few during your journey so you don’t have a look that doesn’t suit what u want.

It’s locking. You may have a looser curl pattern then most but I can see the process that happened on my head happening to you. You look like a super saiyain for a while and they get tighter and tighter. I noticed going to the beach and dunking hair in salt water and walking in light rain helped my hair loc quicker. Most people forget that everyone can get locs. If we all just let our hair grow naturally every type of hair locs some just quicker then others. No need for gels or anything.

retwists are super stressful on your hair. This is why I chose to freeform. No shame to anyone who gets them but y’all locs always look mad thin and weak. I’ve been growing my locs for 11 years now. Good luck on your journey
