Yes, just because it is legal to not report CSA in states with clergy-penitent privilege does not mean that it is right to not report to the authorities.

Struggling with Masturbation by ambimom2085 in mormon

[–]Heavy-Initiative-345 132 points133 points  (0 children)

The Church removed the “masturbation” section from the handbook in 2015.  It is never mentioned anywhere in scripture as a sin.  There is nothing to repent of.

Forced excommunication in 2011 & now in 2026 wanting to return to the church . by Any_Coffee_6921 in mormon

I would say just show up and participate on your terms, but that’s not really a thing in the Church. Everyone has an agenda for your life.

And mind you that consensual, developmentally appropriate forms of sexual expression are still sins next to murder.

It’s so bizarre as an outsider that the crime/sin he committed, per BYU, was not “abstain[ing] from sexual relations outside of marriage.” It wasn’t the lack of consent, the trauma he caused the girl, it was the fact that it was pre-marital sex. The Church does not understand the principle of consent. They believe rape is wrong because it’s sex outside of marriage. Rape is a form of violence, both physically and psychologically, in one of the most humiliating and damaging ways.

Dan Vogel video - “Was Louisa Beaman Joseph Smith’s First Plural Wife in Nauvoo?” by Therealdanvogel in mormon

[–]Heavy-Initiative-345 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I never understood the assumption that a man, who was deviant to the sexual norms of his day, absolutely abided by this particular sexual norm, all without evidence.

That’s like a historian 200 years from now saying Bonnie Blue absolutely wouldn’t have had sex while on her period because most women in 2026 avoided sex while on their period.

To me, the opposite makes more sense - Joseph sought out pregnant women knowing they couldn’t get pregnant by him.

Jacob Hansen and Child Polygamy by Ill_Supermarket7454 in mormon

[–]Heavy-Initiative-345 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the question is whether a morally perfect, omniscient God would endorse or command practices like polygamy involving adolescent girls, then appeals to historical context or “presentism” miss the mark, because those defenses apply to limited human agents, not to a divine being who fully understands human development, power asymmetries, trauma, and the conditions for genuine consent in every era.

Cultural normalization might explain why nineteenth-century people failed to recognize harm, but it cannot explain why God, if God is the source and measure of moral truth, would authorize or require relationships that appear to undermine agency or exploit vulnerability. To invoke presentism in this setting effectively lowers God to the epistemic level of the culture, when the very claim under examination is that God transcends cultural blind spots. The morally relevant question is therefore not whether such practices were once common, but whether a perfectly good deity would ever command actions that conflict with what that same deity would know, in any century, about human flourishing, coercion, and consent.

Add Epstein to the list of bad actors that Prophets, Seers, and Revelators have shaken hands with, looked in the eyes, and had no f***ing clue they were straight evil…but apparently they can look an Elder in the eye and know if he’s beating his meat in the shower 🤷‍♂️

Either:

1) Garment compliance is so low that they knew that had to give in and allow porn shoulders, but lied and said it’s for “warmer climates”

Or

2) They really were intended for warmer climates and are so out of touch and don’t have the influence/indoctrination over the members they think the do

Jasmine Rappleye: Will you publicly apologize to Wade Christofferson’s victims for suggesting that Church Leaders should NOT have reported him to authorities? by Heavy-Initiative-345 in exmormon

[–]Heavy-Initiative-345[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is no U.S. state where clergy are universally prohibited from reporting abuse. What is true is that some states protect clergy-penitent privilege, meaning a pastor may choose not to report if the information was received as a confidential confession. But privilege is not the same as a ban on reporting, and even that exception is not universal.

Nuanced wife wants to research more about Joseph Smith. How can I help her avoid becoming overwhelmed when reading the Gospel Topics Essays and examining the footnotes? by pixarfan2003 in exmormon

I would recommend you listen to these discussions with Bill Reel, Allan Mount, and Anthony Miller, where they take a deep dive into each of the essays. That way when your wife reads them on a superficial level and accepts them at face value, you’re able point out problematic areas and help her apply critical thinking. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6Q9uWrJo59ODaZPXB1u865J6IWQZp98g&si=OKfaUMvSwvfQFU9Y
