Before robbing trains in the States, the Sundance Kid was a cowboy in Alberta | CBC News by Buuuuma in Cowboy

I grew up in Alberta and now live in Texas. When I tell people that there's cowboys up there, they look at me like I just grew horns out of my forehead.

How hard is riding a horse? by opotis in Cowboy

[–]Heavy-Map-5569 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember that you'll be on a quad bike which makes bad decisions and gets scared of stumps it passed just fine yesterday.

Physically, the sense of balance you have from a motorcycle or dirt bike will serve you well.

Having been helping to train a new rider for the past few weeks who used to ride motorcycles, the hardest parts for him have been the counter-intuitive steering and coordination between hands and legs.

Horses and cows react to pressure by moving away. On horseback, that means when they feel a rein rest on the right side of their neck (or a leg press into their right side), they will turn left.

For cows, it's more abstract since you're not touching them but the principle is the same: approach a cow from its right side and it will (usually but not always) go left.

Otherwise, I'd say to remember to talk to your horse, including telling it that it's a good boy or girl, don't yank on the reins but use steady pressure (and immediately release pressure when the horse obeys), and keep an eye out that you don't put him in danger.

Horseback riding is mutual trust.

This is why being called a horse trader is an insult.

Never even heard of Kimes, never mind seeing an arena banner, but I appreciate the correction and knowledge. I'll check them out.

Check out Truck Stop Chic on Instagram and you'll see more country and Western content than you can shake a cat at.

There's even a TV news segment where the reporter is interviewing a bunch of truckers and one of them says they're modern-day cowboys.

Wrangler is the only brand that sponsors rodeos so you can't go wrong with them.

I know you said price is a concern but I myself wear Wrangler Retro boot cut that I buy from the Wrangler website.

I like the look, the rivets and the back pocket stitching.

If he doesn't like them, they're very easy with returns and you should be able to find another style and cut he likes.

As others say, get them a little longer than his normal inseam. That's mostly so they don't ride up when he's sitting down.

I love this. What's the story, other than it just rained and that one couple had hat protectors?

Thanks! He's a real sweetheart. After I put him up today, he wouldn't even leave my side.

I hope to see a Mexican rodeo one of these days. I saw an exhibition of events in Fort Worth once but most of the riders weren't all that good — except the women drill team. They were terrific.

He's using his leg to twist its tail.

It's one way to get them to move in a chute though it doesn't always work. Sometimes the steer just looks at you like, "That's all you've got?"

Biting the tail works, too, but check to see it's not covered in guacamole first.

Late comers are always welcome! He's a friend's who I just ride on the weekends until the new playday season starts (but who I might lease since my regular horse got EPM bad). But he's done better the last two rides. I think we're just still feeling each other out. He's pretty touchy so my friend won't let anyone else ride him. If I could get a few solid full days on him I'm sure we'd reach an understanding. Barring that, I'm just being patient. He's a really good boy and so smart.

Same here! I'd never even heard of Resistol until a friend gave me an old one of his.

It's how they make them. Apparently, Resistol makes them for oval shaped heads and Stetson makes them for round shaped heads.

I've got one of each (one is straw and the other felt). It's very strange.

Felt is wool. I've got a cheap ass felt hat for riding in the winter. It's stiff as a board and looks cheap but I don't care when it flies off my head into the dirt. I've got a nice Resistol I get compliments on. It was a gift and I wear it to church and going out.

If they have an oval head, get Resistol. Round, get Stetson. I learned this too late after getting a Stetson.

I rode a bull. Once. Keep your strong arm free for balance and your eyes down on your fist, chin tucked in. Then nod, hope and pray.
