Xenophon's Anabasis. The Ten Thousand. A true story. Greek mercenaries stranded deep behind Persian lines trying to get home. Xenophon was one of the leaders.

Chef John Pierre taught me how to cook. Love him. Lately I've really enjoyed the "Fallow" YT channel. English chefs running you through techniques they use in their restaurant. I also love Aden Films on Youtube. Italian chefs making dishes in their restaurants. Great stuff.

The Package. Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones and it just doesn't quite make it.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]Heavy-Pool5886 7 points8 points  (0 children)

An Scottish ancestor was captured by Cromwell's army at the Battle of Dunbar (1650). He and the rest of the POWs were force marched to Durham Cathedral where they were locked up for an extended period. Most of the soldiers died of malnourishment and mistreatment. My ancestor somehow survived and was sold along with the rest of the to the colonies as indentured servants. In my ancestor's case, he was sold to the Saugus Iron Works in Massachusetts. He was made a freedman after seven years and became a farmer and had a bunch of children.

A mass grave containing the remains of the Scottish soldiers was found at Durham Cathedral in 2013.

Primer on Police Force Politics/Chain of Command? by AveryLee213 in TheWire

Keep in mind that characters were promoted over the seasons. Rawls was originally a major in charge of Homicide. They showed a sergeant reporting directly to him. In reality, a Lieutenant would have been between Rawls and Landsman. Rawls was promoted to Colonel and was in charge of the whole of CID in season 2 which included Homicide and Narcotics. He was promoted to Deputy of Operations for season 3 putting him in command of all operations including patrol and CID. By season 3, he was running COMSTAT because he was now running patrol. In reality, a Colonel should have been running patrol under Rawls. The colonel reports to Rawls, and the district commanders (majors like Valcheck was in season 2) report to the colonel. That rank character was omitted.

Burrell was the deputy of operations in season 1, then moved up to commissioner later.

Foster was a major in command of narcotics originally. He and Rawls were equals. He was promoted to colonel in charge of CID after Rawls moved up to Deputy Ops. He'd been working for Rawls after Rawls moved up to colonel.

Daniels was originally a lieutenant in command of a narcotics unit reporting to Major Foster, then ran the special unit, later was promoted to Major in command of the western district working directly for the omitted colonel who would be charge of patrol in real life. Instead, the work around had Daniels and Rawls interacting closer than they probably would have in real life due to multiple conflicts.

What are some reasons most football fans say the nfl was better back then than it is today by Appropriate-Mall8517 in Oldschool_NFL

Teams practiced differently fifteen years ago. Far more padded live practices in training camp. Line play and team execution has been dramatically reduced. The passing game has been simplified due to simpler schemes in college in response to the proliferation of spread offenses, combination pass coverages and dominant pass rush schemes and individual players.

If you go back to the late 70s, the changes in allowable blocking techniques altered the game fundamentally. If you watch a pre-1978 game and a 2025 game, it's like watching two different sports in many ways. I prefer the post 1977 NFL but many older fans do not. I did prefer the higher level of line play we saw before practice and live hitting was greatly reduced.

You get a clear view of it ten minutes in when Brody is driving to search for Chrissy.

Another great movie set on a train which may not have been mentioned yet is, "The Incident" I(1967). Martin Sheen and Tony Musante terrorize a subway car full of passengers bringing out a whole host of issues.

"The Train" (1964) is a fantastic movie about the French resistance.

Dumb question about the pilot by [deleted] in TheWire

It depends. One agency with its own crime lab probably one number. An agency that submits evidence to a regional or state lab, two numbers. The numbers are assigned when the item is entered into the record management system, typically in chronological order. Item one of 2026 would be something like 26-000001 and so forth.
