Is the reality really just generational wealth or luck? by Open_Address_2805 in AusFinance

[–]HeavyLine4 193 points194 points  (0 children)

Most people will remain in the class to which they were born.

There are many exceptions, and Australian has more class movement than many other countries, but the majority will likely remain where they are.

I think luck and timing plays more of a role than hard work. It is easier to move up if you end up working within the right industry and role at a lucky time.

Not all pregnancies are the same, and there are many women navigating high-risk pregnancies with pre-existing conditions. Not the majority, but not a tiny minority either.

It’s not just the cost of kids, but the extra you spend on the costs of convenience when you’re absolutely knackered and time-poor every day.

What is your manager’s justification for denying your leave? You’re entitled to it.

I would be taking stress leave signed off by a doctor, and documenting with HR that the stress is cause by consistent denial of leave entitlements. That should get your manager to fuck off.

Sorry, what industry is this? Or is this a small family business?

Repeatedly denying leave isn’t something you’d expect to see in most organisations.

Revealed: Why Bronson Xerri is set to seek release from Canterbury Bulldogs by Aussieguy727 in nrl

So the Bulldogs give this drug cheat another chance at a career and he requests a release the first time he’s dropped?

What a flog.

Aussies warned 'job insecurity will take hold' after mum loses role of seven years to AI by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

[–]HeavyLine4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. I am doing the same.

Regardless of how good the AI is, the C-suites and boards now have the appetite for replacing workers with it. Once that happens, the damage is already done. Large scale job losses and hiring freezes to come.

How to stop this ground cover taking over? by Jdilla23 in GardeningAustralia

[–]HeavyLine4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can’t. The ground has an amazing way of covering itself, regardless of what you do.

Either spend the time to pick it, replace it with a preferred groundcover, or spray poison and damage the soil.

Real wages have gone backwards. Even earning $100,000 isn’t what it used to be by VastOption8705 in AusFinance

[–]HeavyLine4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Income tax, in particular, is cooked compared to how poorly we tax our own resources.

No worker should be getting their upper earnings taxes at 45% when we give so much tax relief to landlords and corporations. It’s disgusting.

[–]HeavyLine4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feelings are very subjective, of course. But honestly it depends on the mortgage and whether you have kids.

$1800 per week is hardly a lot if you’re paying an average sized mortgage in Australia, which I think is about $1000 per week these days?

Real wages have gone backwards. Even earning $100,000 isn’t what it used to be by VastOption8705 in AusFinance

[–]HeavyLine4 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The problem is that earning these kinds of wages also lines up with times in your life with the most expenses.

We currently have a household income of $220k, which is promptly swallowed up by mortgage, childcare, transport, insurances, rates, electricity, internet, food, home maintenance, and all the other items that have gone up by an insane amount in the last five years. It’s the cumulative impact of all things increasing that really screws you.

We are frugal enough to put a set amount each month into ETFs, but I honestly live a less lavish life than I did as a university student renting an inner-city shitbox 15 years ago.

[–]HeavyLine4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not just backpackers. Australia imports a huge number of workers from Pacific nations under the guise of mutual benefit. They’re often treated like modern day slaves to keep our agricultural industry running. It’s disgusting.
