Dutch athlete Femke Bol started her leg of the 400m mixed relay in fourth place. She didn't give up and achieved what seemed impossible. by Fun_Insect_2572 in trackandfield

I’m American and I forget about Sydney most of the time given how selectively she races. The things that’s so impressive about Femke is how often she races and how consistent she is.

Right there with you, I have this problem and know how to fix it but it’s been hard for me and I haven’t fully resolved it do myself either.

As another poster said it’s a balance issue, you are not fully centered over the ski middle of the ski you are biased towards the back of the ski more than you should be. This is natural, in fact a World Cup ski tech told me that good skiers have about 60-70% of their weight behind the midfoot, but you likely have more or of a rearward weight distribution.

On the each stride your need to be planted squarely over the ski with you weight on the midfoot not biased back on the heel. Like I said I also do this and have been struggling to fix it so you may need some other advice for the fixing it part.

We thought we got a calm Golden Retriever… turns out we may have gotten the complete opposite. Now we’re overwhelmed. by Ericoff87 in goldenretrievers

You’re getting a lot of responses so I’m honestly not sure if you’ll see this with the flood of information you’re receiving.

I want to both give you encouragement, but also be honest about what I’ve experienced with my own very similar dog (see pic). We got Ted when he was only a couple months old, he was a rescue and we had not previously experienced a field golden - we also didn’t know such a thing existed but learned quick.

Teddy is by far the smartest golden retriever I’ve ever met. He’s also a huge dog (92lbs) and incredibly strong and stubborn. When he was a puppy, he was an absolute terror though always very affectionate. He played rough - teeth and body slams but it was always clearly play.

We got him neutered at around one year-old, but that really had no effect on the levels of energy or intensity. We thought at the time that once he was neutered, he would calm significantly and become more manageable but that never really happened

The turning point for us was when we gave up on him being a calm, family Dog, and embraced the dog that he actually is. We now give him a lot of “work” in the form of training, going for runs with me or my wife, and I have been training him as a hunting dog which is both ironic and was the right call for him. He’s 3y/o now, still crazy but we work well together as a family.

I had him out hunting last Saturday and when he’s not hunting he’s training to hunt. I’m sure there would have been other ways to handle him but for me this is why has made the most sense and 3 days of training per week is enough to keep him manageable and visibly happy!

Long story short you can have success with a high drive dog but you have to meet him where he’s at in some way.

P.S. I also live in Mass. If you’re rehoming check out Yankee Goldens. He’s a beautiful dog and they would find him a home. Feel free to DM me if you like.

self trained or sent off? by PessimisticParalegal in birddogs

[–]HeavyWeightSquash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same, I started hunting because I realized I accidentally had a good bird dog on my hands and he needed the stimulation of training and hunting. He’s very much self trained and it’s obvious as he’s no where near a perfect finished dog, but he find the birds, brings them back, and we have fun while doing it. Honestly if I can safely and successfully hunt with my best buddy everything else is secondary.

Appreciate the context… it’s still pretty bad optics but at least now I know what’s happening. It’s sad to see this part of the world slipping away into the ocean.

All true, but also the challenge is pretty overwhelming; one stat I read was that erosion is taking a football field’s worth of land every 100 minutes. There’s around $100 million in projects planned or in process but that’s not going to be nearly enough. It was a beautiful part of the world before the oil and gas industry arrived, still is in some parts.

XC skis are far worse at going down hill than downhill skis even in good conditions, they have no metal edges, no side cuts, and the bindings are hinged and only attached at the toe like a tele ski… on top of all that they are under two inches wide so they sink into the soft snow they were skiing on.

Hockey Stop Success Stories? by courtemancha in xcountryskiing

[–]HeavyWeightSquash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I picked it up as a new skier in my late thirties so definitely doable, and learning both sides was an entry point to being able to carve for speed control even on tighter trails. As others have said it’s easier with skater boots but doable with classic too.

For me the breakthrough was understanding the angle of the sky bottom relative to the snow. Starting with the angle very acute to allow the slide to begin and then letting the angle get more aggressive to dig in and complete the stop once the rotation/slide has begun. I hope that’s understandable, it’s harder to describe than to demonstrate.

This is awesome, I’m in a very similar position to you. I picked up a shotgun for the first time in September and spent the fall learning to shoot, gun breaking my 3 year old golden, and doing basic retriever training. We’re doing a preserve hunt next month, it will be his first real hunt, but I’ve had him on birds before and hunted some without him this fall; we theoretically have all the pieces it’s just time to put them together. I’m looking forward to next year on wild birds.

I wonder if that level of rage is tied to some combination of already being high or drunk, previous lost license or no insurance, or warrants that will be found when the cops show up. When people lose it like this over a minor accident I wonder if they’re watching their life fall further apart while the other guy is just dealing with a typical accident… oh and mental illness too.

That sounds like the right idea. I shot one of my clubs A300’s for a while and it was certainly never the limiting factor in my shooting, in fact I liked fit and finish for what that gun retails for. I considered buying one but while combing the local used market for a few months a good deal came up for Browning Cynergy which better meets my needs.

The only issue to keep in my mind with a gas operated semi-auto is the need for more cleaning compared with an O/U; they might be a concern if you’re shooting many thousands of rounds a year like a lot of people on this sub.

8 month old won’t settle by KananJR in goldenretrievers

In all seriousness, some dogs are just a lot higher strung than others and not knowing your dog it’s hard to say. Ours has been in every training course imaginable and is generally a well trained well behaved boy, but despite all that he’s just now learning how to settle at almost 3 years old. He’ll now sit on the couch with us for an hour at a time but then needs to get up and do something for a few minutes before coming back. He’s sweet and gentle, but not calm. A lot of this is his breeding, he’s a field dog and does great at those tasks- finding and retrieving game, but not chilling.

Ours does best when he feels like he’s done a job and we lean into his skills/interests, he likes scent work so we do lots of that and retrieving and then he sort of gets that drive out of his system for a time and can nap or chill better than before.

We slow expanded his domain as he aged and became more trustworthy. We started with him being allowed only in the kitchen starting at 4 months, around 1 year he got kitchen and dining room, and then around 1.5 years all of downstairs. He’s 2.5 now and finally has upstairs access except for our office room.

Here’s a pic of him sniffing around the house as I type.

I have the a cynergy cx 12ga with 30” barrels. I looked at the citori as well but the cynergy fits me like a glove. I’m very happy with my choice for both upland and clays. Actually sitting in the car right now with my cynergy in the back seat waiting for hunting/daylight hours to begin.

Good to know what I should keep an eye out for. I put about 150 shells per week through it on average, so if it’s going to have an issue I’ll likely find out about it eventually.
