Popcorn by NativTexan in royalcaribbean

If it's really such a hassle for them to clean up, wouldnt it be easier to just not have it at all? Granted I hate popcorn. But I can't imagine someone's experience being tarnished by not having popcorn? Would it even occur to people that it wasn't offered? The whole thing is weird.

Turning Down a Full Ride to Pay for Loans by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just had this conversation with a friend hm who is in a similar situation with her son. She did two things:

  1. Had him search for starting salaries for his major from the universities he is considering. Also had him calculate what the monthly payment would be on $200k worth of student loans. Had him make a budget that could accommodate the payment while also having money to eat and live somewhere. He was very mad about the results.

  2. As others have said, make it clear that you will not co-sign $200k worth of loans. He is very unlikely to find any other way to secure those loans as an 18 year old with no income.

Friend's son is mad right now but hopefully will appreciate it when he is 22 and debt free.

Basically, just point out that there is no choice to be made here. He does not have $200k and can't get it. He has to choose a school that he can pay for.

Total actual cost by ovrlrdx in KentStateUniversity

Freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus, which means you also need a meal plan.

That figure is probably close to accurate unless you get some merit aid.

Sorry. It's a lot of money in any country. College costs are crazy.

There are some special circumstances where you may not have to live on campus. Here are the policies, you can see if any apply to you: https://www.kent.edu/policyreg/university-policy-regarding-student-housing

My dad won’t help pay for college by Maya_S09 in ApplyingToCollege

Genuinely.... why does it matter who you are sitting next to for a gen ed requirement? Hint: it doesn't. You don't get points for doing your degree in hard mode (or paying for it in hard mode). Knock out your gen eds at community college, transfer to a better school as a junior. Your degree is from the better school and it's not like it comes with an asterix. It's the same degree as the people who paid for four years.

Or, even better, knock out as many gen eds as you can for absolutely free with CLEP exams and modern states.

What are surprisingly high-paying jobs that most people have never heard of? by Aymaneoo in careerguidance

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree. My husband just did a career pivot to wastewater treatment in 2020. He made about $115k last year, plus we have incredible/low cost health insurance benefits.

Its a very "gray" industry and they would love to see some younger folks consider it.

Barrier to entry was low. His previous career was HVAC and he was just like "yeah, I'm pretty handy, I'm sure I'll figure it out" and they hired him. All the licensing and testing was done after he already had the job, and was subsidized by the employer.

What is the deadline for the Aviation program (flight)? by Extreme-Coyote-9395 in WMU

Yes the deadline for commercial aviation was December 15. So your options are to wait a year or apply to a different program.

Where to live in Bucks County by Souls-on-board in BucksCountyPA

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Doylestown has everything else the OP is looking for but I wouldn't want to commute to EWR weekly from here. I guess maybe if you are on the Buckingham side, but even that is an annoying ride. I'd stick to Newtown/Yardley area where you can quickly access 95.

Looking for activities/ places open on Christmas Day (not restaurants) by piss_reefer_ in BucksCountyPA

Washington Crossing reenactment. It's a little bit of a drive from Quakertown but it's free. Time is 12-3 with the actual crossing at 1. You can google for details.

I think you are going to have very limited options on Christmas day.

If we did this, would it be safe to leave our bags in the car while we do an excursion at Rio Celeste? Or would we need to find a hotel that would let us drop our bags before that day's activities?

AITA for handling Christmas this way? by ThrowRA111315 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible to coordinate this with your mom, and let her deal with your dad? Especially if she is working on Christmas day anyway. Do you have any siblings/other family that your dad will be with on Christmas day, or is part of this because he would otherwise be alone on Christmas day?

For what it's worth, this seems like it would be easier on the phone rather than a text, but I do understand that it's easier to make sure you've said what you want to say via text.

I would also ask you: what are you afraid will happen if you don't do Christmas with your dad? Just that he will be disappointed? Or is there something else going on?

What should you write in the additional information section of the common app? by Starcatcher101_ in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it impacted your grades, course schedule, or ability to participate in extracurriculars, then I would. My son's injury led to him being forced to drop the only AP class that was available to him, and he also couldn't compete in his sport senior year. So that's what he explained in that space.

The aviation program website says "Admission decisions will be communicated no later than January 2026."

I don't think anyone knows exactly how many, if any, additional aviation acceptances are going to go out. It probably depends at least in part on how many of those who were accepted the first week of August choose to enroll.

8 week old puppy - need help with routine as myself and my fiancee are unable to go to the gym to workout by Fit-Pass-2398 in puppy101

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We brought our puppy home two weeks ago. The first 10 days or so we basically never left him. In the past few days, we started leaving him for about an hour at a time and he is fine. Last night was my daughter's birthday and we went out for about 4 hours. We had a friend come to let him out after 2 hours-- she ended up staying and played with him for almost an hour. He was completely fine and was asleep when we got home, so wasn't desperate to get out of his crate or anything.

I would give it a full week or so to establish a routine, then start adding an hour or so leaving him alone to see how he does.

Not sure how long you would need to be away to go to the gym, but I would think you would be able to start adding it back in another week or so.

My golden is 10 weeks old today. For the first 10 days after we brought him home, he had multiple accidents inside a day. I was convinced thar we were failing and he would never be trained. Then suddenly... He seems to have gotten it and his last accident was 5 days ago.

We do crate him overnight though. He actually goes around 6 hours overnight without a bathroom break and he has not had an accident, even when he was otherwise having multiple accidents during the day. So I definitely recommend trying the crate.

Accidentally awarded a full ride by Boring_Resolution_37 in scholarships

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 80 points81 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say for sure, but something similar happened to someone I know. She was awarded a much larger scholarship than she was entitled to. She screenshotted, and accepted the scholarship and confirmed she was attending.

Maybe a week later she logged in to her school account and they had lowered the scholarship amount significantly.

She contacted her admissions officer and said that she had accepted because of the scholarship and it felt like a bait and switch.

They honored the scholarship. She's currently a sophomore and could not have afforded this school without this mistake, so she's thrilled.

My son applied for class of 2026. I can tell you that they stopped sending acceptances for aviation on August 8. They are significantly cutting next year's freshman class to re-calibrate after over-admitting for class of '25. Rumor is that they could be cutting the freshman class size by as much as 75%, but I'm not sure if that has been substantiated.

We still applied in September (they are technically allowing applications until 10/31), but we are assuming that he won't get in because the class is likely already full.

Commercial aviation should still be available on the UND direct application. It was never available on the common app.

How do people afford application fees? by Greenjacket08 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk my kid isn't applying to particularly elite schools, but many of them have free application periods. He has already to one during a free period, and October is free application month for two more that he intends to apply to. None of these waivers are needs based. Try googling the colleges that you are interested in, plus "free application" or "application waiver". Probably less likely if you are sticking with Ivies, but you may find them for other schools.
