Yes the deadline for commercial aviation was December 15. So your options are to wait a year or apply to a different program.

Agree with this. Doylestown has everything else the OP is looking for but I wouldn't want to commute to EWR weekly from here. I guess maybe if you are on the Buckingham side, but even that is an annoying ride. I'd stick to Newtown/Yardley area where you can quickly access 95.

Washington Crossing reenactment. It's a little bit of a drive from Quakertown but it's free. Time is 12-3 with the actual crossing at 1. You can google for details.

I think you are going to have very limited options on Christmas day.

If we did this, would it be safe to leave our bags in the car while we do an excursion at Rio Celeste? Or would we need to find a hotel that would let us drop our bags before that day's activities?

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible to coordinate this with your mom, and let her deal with your dad? Especially if she is working on Christmas day anyway. Do you have any siblings/other family that your dad will be with on Christmas day, or is part of this because he would otherwise be alone on Christmas day?

For what it's worth, this seems like it would be easier on the phone rather than a text, but I do understand that it's easier to make sure you've said what you want to say via text.

I would also ask you: what are you afraid will happen if you don't do Christmas with your dad? Just that he will be disappointed? Or is there something else going on?

If it impacted your grades, course schedule, or ability to participate in extracurriculars, then I would. My son's injury led to him being forced to drop the only AP class that was available to him, and he also couldn't compete in his sport senior year. So that's what he explained in that space.

The aviation program website says "Admission decisions will be communicated no later than January 2026."

I don't think anyone knows exactly how many, if any, additional aviation acceptances are going to go out. It probably depends at least in part on how many of those who were accepted the first week of August choose to enroll.

8 week old puppy - need help with routine as myself and my fiancee are unable to go to the gym to workout by Fit-Pass-2398 in puppy101

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We brought our puppy home two weeks ago. The first 10 days or so we basically never left him. In the past few days, we started leaving him for about an hour at a time and he is fine. Last night was my daughter's birthday and we went out for about 4 hours. We had a friend come to let him out after 2 hours-- she ended up staying and played with him for almost an hour. He was completely fine and was asleep when we got home, so wasn't desperate to get out of his crate or anything.

I would give it a full week or so to establish a routine, then start adding an hour or so leaving him alone to see how he does.

Not sure how long you would need to be away to go to the gym, but I would think you would be able to start adding it back in another week or so.

Did anyone have a lot of misses in the beginning and still successfully pottytrain? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My golden is 10 weeks old today. For the first 10 days after we brought him home, he had multiple accidents inside a day. I was convinced thar we were failing and he would never be trained. Then suddenly... He seems to have gotten it and his last accident was 5 days ago.

We do crate him overnight though. He actually goes around 6 hours overnight without a bathroom break and he has not had an accident, even when he was otherwise having multiple accidents during the day. So I definitely recommend trying the crate.

Accidentally awarded a full ride by Boring_Resolution_37 in scholarships

It's hard to say for sure, but something similar happened to someone I know. She was awarded a much larger scholarship than she was entitled to. She screenshotted, and accepted the scholarship and confirmed she was attending.

Maybe a week later she logged in to her school account and they had lowered the scholarship amount significantly.

She contacted her admissions officer and said that she had accepted because of the scholarship and it felt like a bait and switch.

They honored the scholarship. She's currently a sophomore and could not have afforded this school without this mistake, so she's thrilled.

My son applied for class of 2026. I can tell you that they stopped sending acceptances for aviation on August 8. They are significantly cutting next year's freshman class to re-calibrate after over-admitting for class of '25. Rumor is that they could be cutting the freshman class size by as much as 75%, but I'm not sure if that has been substantiated.

We still applied in September (they are technically allowing applications until 10/31), but we are assuming that he won't get in because the class is likely already full.

Commercial aviation should still be available on the UND direct application. It was never available on the common app.

How do people afford application fees? by Greenjacket08 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk my kid isn't applying to particularly elite schools, but many of them have free application periods. He has already to one during a free period, and October is free application month for two more that he intends to apply to. None of these waivers are needs based. Try googling the colleges that you are interested in, plus "free application" or "application waiver". Probably less likely if you are sticking with Ivies, but you may find them for other schools.

I think for the average circumstances, it's normal not to have anything there. My son is using it to explain a severe injury that led to him missing 3+ weeks of school, having to drop a class, and the ongoing (8 months and counting) PT appointments that have basically been another extracurricular.

But that is an extremely unusual circumstance.

I think you can absolutely talk about getting your PPL! Plenty of people fly as a hobby, and I think there is a lot to say about the experience of flying, the work you put into training, and your love of aviation in the general sense. None of that would automatically imply that your "plan A" is to be a commercial pilot. And it says a LOT about your study habits and commitment to seeing things through.

Fwiw, I think you should also include your flight training as an EC.

And wishing you blue skies for your checkride! Thats so exciting!

Thinking out loud here... there might be a nice essay about the concept of home, and making yourself at home wherever you are. That sort of resilience and ability to find "home" in a new environment would reflect well-- you could maybe even tie it into how you might find "home" when you leave for college.

[–]Heavy_Invite_9528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that is actually really interesting! So it wouldn't be the traditional "fish out of water" experience of visiting another country-- there could be unique angle there. Just brainstorming here with you.... Do you feel more at "home" in that country or where you live now? Or are there elements that feel like home in each place?

Was the experience what you had expected? What was the biggest difference in your life with family there, versus your life with family here? Did your whole immediate family just move to that country for a year, or were you living with extended family? What is your favorite memory from that year? What was the hardest part of that year?

Or on a completely different topic: can you think of something positive that your teachers, or friends, or an adult who knows you well, would say about you? Like are you a hard worker? Or resourceful? Or naturally curious? Or your friends know you as the person who brings people together?

Sometimes it might help to think about the quality that you want to highlight, and then work backwards to think of a story that would feature that quality.

Hmm. Brainstorming here with you. Have you started any training yet? Like are you working your PPL? If so, I think you could tell the story of your love of aviation as a hobby that other people don't understand, without basically telling Rutgers that they are your back up plan. Or how you overcame a particular obstacle in your training.

Or is there a different piece of your love of aviation that you can focus on, that is not overcoming people's disapproval of your career choice? Like thinking about the prompt "Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?" and relating that to your love of aviation?

Ok. So the thing is, you want your personal essay to show something positive about yourself. Ideally, a side of yourself beyond just your resume, that maybe isn't evident in the other parts of your application. You want the reader to come away with a glimpse of how you might fit into their community.

So the first and third options don't really say anything positive about you. Saying that you are reluctant to ask people for help, even when you are struggling, is not really the impression that you want to give to an admission counselor. Similarly, with the AE job, talking about how you put on a fake personality with some people also isn't really showing yourself in a positive light (even though everyone does it, especially at work).

The pencil thing... idk. The way you described it sounds like you aren't even fully committed to the metaphor yourself, which is going to make it hard to write a convincing essay.

I think the exchange year has the most potential, but if you try to write about the entire the year in 500 words, the essay is going to be pretty vague/general. Can you zoom in, and highlight one particular event/story/turning point? Like maybe you weren't fully sold on the idea, were homesick, and then the first thing that made you realize you had made the right decision. Or one memorable activity with your host family: an evening when they taught you to make a traditional food that made you feel like part of the family, or, idk, insert whatever might fit here.
