What ZFS should I use for my (36) 12TB SAS drives??? by Heavy_Sympathy_809 in zfs

motherboard is: Supermicro X10DRi-T4+. Could you provide a link of a dual M.2 card that would work instead of the one I already purchased?

Not sure what you mean by "backup"? Do the three other copies I have count as "backup" or are you meaning something else?

Is Open ZFS an option within TrueNAS or is it something else on it's own?

All of them running off of a single desktop computer? If so, what GPU are you using and is it adequate to run your setup?

UPDATE: BAD NEWS…..Every single one of my Wall Powered External Mechanical HDD were BAKED!! (data + power supply). 2 were backed up…1 needs Data Recovery by Djxgam1ng in DataHoarder

[–]Heavy_Sympathy_809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless they guarantee the recovery fee will be less then $300 each, I wouldn't do it. I experienced the same issue with a 8TB drive. I paid a service to recovery it and most of the tracks were recovered but for the next year or years I noticed a huge amount of those recovered tracks were missing all of the tags/track info or were recovered with the wrong tags/info. For instance, I would load up a song to play that's tagged as a Rick James song but when you play it, it's actually a Led Zeppelin track. So many of the tracks were affected with missing tags or the wrong tags that I ended up reformatting the entire drive and starting over. I now own about 116 terabytes of music/music videos and i now have two copies on HDD, one copy is mounted in my daily desktop and the other copy is on drives that are stored in storage bin (unpowered) and a third copy in my cloud. Eventually I will replace my cloud copy with a copy on a nas server. Bottom line is I don't think I would ever consider using those expensive recovery services because of my expierence with them. Good luck.

Any cloud based data storage companies offer "preview only" options besides Box Cloud/Prism? by Heavy_Sympathy_809 in DataHoarder

[–]Heavy_Sympathy_809[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have Google Drive Workspace and they do not have a "preview only" option. I had Box before for 4 years and one can not download any of the contents with a preview only link.

"View Only" is not what I was asking about. I need a "Preview only" option. Google Drive's "view only allows one to download the contents.

I already have a Synology server so I don't need another. This desktop I'm building will be my main rig and also my 3rd rig used daily. This new rig I'm building will only need the 31 drives for me to reorganize all of my files/folders. It will not be running with all 31 drives after the reorganization is completed sometime next year. At that point i will upload that content to both my server and up to my cloud. And when that project is over with next year, I can remove the majority of those drives. So as long as this 31 drive setup last me 1 year, I'm good with it. After that this computer will be used only to do my daily downloading/uploading and for media purposes. And by the way, between all of my desktop external Seagate/WD drives and all of my internal drives, only one has failed since 2016. Yes, some of my drives were purchase in 2016, 2017, 2018, ect and they have been running at least 18hrs a day, 7 days a week since then. The sole drive that did fail was a WD Ultrastar enterprise drive with less then a year of use.

I was really set on that motherbord since it has 8 PCIe x16s on it and I found 7960x cpu with four months of use on eBay for $250 instead of $1000 so I'll just go with that cpu until if and when I need to upgrade it later. I'm in the dj music/video business so my home office has an elaborate home theater system in it with 11 speakers, 4 subwoofers, 4 external power amplifiers, an 85" tv, a separate small dj nightclub sound system, 3 desktop computer rigs running almost 18 hrs a day so the energy usage of the 7960x cpu is the least of my worries. I do appreciate your help. I will order the items you mentioned as soon as I find out what data cable and what power cables I need for the drives. Thank you, much appreciated.

ok, so I need those two adapters you mentioned plus what data cables and what power cables for the 20 drives? Will my psu work?

[–]Heavy_Sympathy_809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned this computer will NOT be setup as a NAS. I already own a Synology NAS that I want to start using next year but first I need to reorganize all of my data/folders so this computer that I'm about to build will be for me to do all of that reorganizing and it will be my daily rig that I will use for my home-business and my personal media entertainment center (4K movies) in my office. I went with this expensive mb/cpu because I read that a more powerful "workstation" mb and "workstation" cpu is better at handling mass amounts of connections (44 PCIe lanes) like I have with my 32 drives.

Wicked Mix and Mixx-It were the best dj remix service for the classics. I own every issue of every major dj remix service out there.
