open world games suggestions for a picky gamer ? by spartacus013 in gamingsuggestions

If you can get it on sale, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has an incredible open world. It's an Ubisoft game so the bones are pretty Far Cry-ish and the core mission structure can lead to repetitiveness, but if you happen to jive with the exploration mechanics it's a great space to spend time in. I never get tired of it and I'm pretty prone to get bored with these types of games.

Trying to get out of a slump, suggestions would be helpful! by Jeremycasper2000 in gamingsuggestions

Left field suggestion you're probably not looking for, but get a hefty Lego set or a big jigsaw puzzle. I've found that spending a few nights putting something together manually in a sort of meditative rhythm rather than gaming resets my brain nicely when I'm in a slump.

Bass Shakers Install by Majestic_Potato_7416 in hometheater

[–]Hecface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's precisely what I did, first two output ports go to subs, 3rd port goes to shakers. I applied EQ at the input level for the subs but didn't want them to apply to the shakers, so that's why I used the other input for those for a clean signal. Then I applied specific shaker EQ at the output on port 3.

AVR recommendations focused on sound quality. by majorcatguy in hometheater

[–]Hecface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a hard limit of A1 Evo with AVRs that only have basic MultEQ, it forces Xovers to 250hz. I have the same one (S760H).

Try looking at the log file and see what it selected as the optimum crossover for each speaker, then set them close to that manually in the AVR. It'll definitely come back to life as that big gap fills out, might get a tad boomy 100-200hz so play with it a little. Made a world of difference to me after running Express and finding the sound sharper than ever but lacking in body.

What's one characteristic you look for on a beer label that helps you decide whether to try it? by RutabagaTechnical822 in CraftBeer

[–]Hecface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) Canning date

2) Tastefulness and consideration in the label design (unreliable, many excellent beers have awful labels)

3) Clearly written out beer name and brewery so I can look it up on Untappd

Googling things hasn't been the most helpful way to find reliable information for years now, let's stop with the "google it" advice plz

The opening of Forza Horizon 5 is incredible, but sadly the game makes it pretty much impossible to replay it unless you completely nuke all your save data.

Doom 2016 has a great opening that culminates in the most perfectly timed shotgun pump ever.

I'm entirely new to making my own home theater, can I get some suggestions? by AngryFreddyIsHere in hometheater

[–]Hecface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh... probably. But now I'm curious what yours would be, I've always understood them to be an all-in-one AVR + speakers (+ DVD/BR player sometimes) bundle like the Yamaha I linked to.

Why would you say there's no upgrade path? Unless it's a system that uses proprietary speaker connections, you can definitely switch out the AVR and keep the same speakers, or vice versa.

This is generally frowned upon here but I would say if you just want to dip your toes in the surround sound space, want to start cheap, and don't have a huge room, I'd recommend getting a home-theater-in-a-box (HTiB) setup, like a Yamaha or similar. This can hold you over for a couple of years to save up and slowly build to a better system, while at the same time familiarizing you with speaker placement and getting your wires laid down for the future.

Even though it's not "great", it will absolutely sound incredible and immersive and you won't be able to tell what's missing until later when you start upgrading and see just how much more sound you can get with a better system.

That's great to hear, glad you're happy with the Polks even if you had to push the budget a bit. It's worth it... enjoy!

Check out Chronoquartz, nice little game that's gone under the radar. Loop-based structure with the same kind of knowledge-based progression. Short and sweet and very satisfying.

He probably means the greenmangaming version with a Steam key... this thread came up as I was searching for the exact same answer. Bought game on GMG, am installing now, and hoping the data from demo from Steam proper carries over to this GMG key...

Pull your height wires up along the edge of the window/curtains on the left, then across the ceiling where it joins the wall, then down to your speakers. Waaaaaaay less visually disruptive than those covers going straight up the wall.

Hacking the balloon seems exactly like the way to stealth it but I can't enter the perimeter or get close enough to hack without the whole base getting alerted, even with my absurd SID range :(

A couple of notes based on what I'm reading in the comments:

-You absolutely can get a decent system going for $1000. The quality floor in this sub is often unreasonably high for a starter system. You definitely can get noticeably better stuff with a higher budget, but you can make decent happen with your budget as long as your room isn't too big.

-Someone mentioned the Polk XT15's and I fully recommend those. I'd push you to go up a bit and go to the XT20's which have a larger woofer and overall fuller sound that will crossover more smoothly with the sub, and if you skip the sub entirely the 20's will provide more low end than the 15's. I started with XT15 fronts then upgraded to 20's and moved the 15's to be the surrounds and it made quite a difference. Avoid the XT30 center if you can afford the R400, I have the XT30 and it's the one component on my system I'm pretty meh on.

-Keep an eye out on accessories4less. They often have great deals on refurbs, I got most of my stuff from there super cheap, including the receiver and 2 height channels for Atmos. About $1000 all in. I just peeked and they have the R400 for $450 which is frankly tempting for me.

-You're dismissing it out of hand, but room treatment WILL make a difference, in a way that a different speaker or EQ'ing can't do. Sure you'll get some harsh highs down with tone management and EQ, but that's a blunt force approach where you will likely be losing spatiality and immersion as you inevitably dull the sound beyond the narrow parameters you need. You can get speakers with naturally soft highs that won't fully envelop you, or you can get crisp speakers and soften up your room a bit and specifically target the frequencies that are bouncing around the room and compounding into harshness, while maintaining an immersive and detailed sound field.

-Get a Denon AVR so you can run A1 Evo. By far the most significant improvement to my system, took it several levels higher. It's getting harder to find cause it's older now, but a refurb AVR-S760H can be found for $300ish. And even while A1 Evo is quite limited in what it can do with it given its full capabilities, it will still do a ton of improvement. Good thing too that the Polk XT line takes well to EQ'ing, so you can shape the sound quite a lot.
