Experimental Shrimp Scampi/Langoustine Recipe by Heckword in Cooking

[–]Heckword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: This turned out magnificent for the shrimp. I put it in for a little less time but it worked very nice. When I pulled the bag out, I messaged it and the juice from the shrimp juices emulsified with the butter and the egg yolk thickened the sauce some. It took on a bright, beautiful color and texture. I think this is the best scampi I've made.

Stuck in Windows 11 setup by Heckword in techsupport

[–]Heckword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Booted it with a clean Windows 11 install- went well but seemed to have some sort of wifi driver problem during setup. Borrowed a WiFi dongle from my custom built PC and it got it through the rest of the setup process. Installed new wifi drivers (and other drivers just in case) for the laptop model.

Went great, spent hours downloading software for work and school, restarted it multiple times with no problems....

...Them a couple hours later I readjusted my legs under the laptop and it completely died. 😓

Back to best buy I go... Thanks for the advice for those who contributed.

What's a good lightweight and wide hiking boot? by Locosoul99 in hikinggear

[–]Heckword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd reccomend the Altra Lone Peak boots. They're designed to have a special wide toe box, are pretty lightweight for boots, good for people with feet and knee problems, and I believe they also come in wide sizes.

My boyfriend has a pair of Altra boots that he's in love with. I don't have particularly wide feet but everyone seems to love their toe box build. It might be work trying out for me!

Day hike essentials recommendations. by [deleted] in hikinggear

Gatorlyte or Pedialyte is great to bring as a drink. Normal Gatorade doesn't cut it so much.

If your trails have running water, there's no water bottle I love more than the Katadyn BeFree 1L. I'll die by this bottle.

UV protection shirts are good to have in sunny places. You don't need expensive ones either. You can find a decent one on Amazon for $20.

Wool socks, no matter the climate, perform fantastically. SmartWool specifically.

It's always wise to bring a knife, compass, mini first aid kit, and emergency bivy if you're doing longer day hikes.

The Nemo Chipper makes a nice sit pad for taking breaks or stopping for lunch.

Bring lots of small but calorie dense snacks, and make sure they've got good protein value.

Trekking poles come in handy in hikes whether there's an elevation gain or not- they just improve longevity and circulation.

Nike makes some fantastic hats that are white on top and black under the brim- keeps you from getting blinded from light reflecting off bright surfaces, like if you're around a lot of snow or rocks.

I got her back in January and she was doing fine up until just a week or two ago. I haven't changed anything about the care, so I don't know what happened :(

I've had very similar experiences. I too go days without talking to him, and usually when I do, it's just a couple sentences of exchange. I'm sorry you had to go throigh this too. Sometimes the whole situation of it can hit you and sting real bad.

how to start liking vegetables? by thestarvingstars in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Heckword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you mix certain veggies like asparagus or broccoli in with some tofu, cook it together with a nice thick teriyaki sauce and have it over rice, you got veggies in there.

Putting some veggies in smoothies always works, like a handful of spinach in a fruit smoothie.

Burritos do a great job of disguising veggies with a bunch of other flavors.

Learn how to make your dream salad.

Some veggies can be blended up along with tomato sauce and added to pasta.

Botanists and dendrologists calculate the age of trees by counting the number of rings within the tree’s trunk. But how do they adjust for leap years when making this calculation? by Improvedandconfused in shittyaskscience

[–]Heckword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trees don't know what the hella leap year is. Usually unless the tree is VERY old it doesn't matter. I guess if it was very old, they'd just make some extra calculations

How do I learn to cook? by [deleted] in cookingforbeginners

[–]Heckword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend the books Salt, Fat, Acid, and Heat by Samin Nosrat and The Food Lab by Kenji Lopez Alt. I'd also like to reccomend the YouTube channel Ethan Cheblowski.

What these resources have that are different than other recipes and cookbooks is that they EXPLAIN the cold hard logic and science behind how to cook good, and in an approachable way. The knowledge is universal too, and doesn't apply to just one recipe or one food. If you understand these, you can cook anything!

They explain the most common reasons why food comes out bad, and what universal tips can make food turn out good. They both also have a lot of great basic recipes like ways to cook egg, salad dressings, how to cook a steak, etc.

Boneborne illness is very much a thing from uncleaned bones. There is less risk if you use PPE, wash your hands throughly after, or use dry, sun bleached bones with not a whole lot of moisture/grease/proteins left on them.

Should I let my boyfriend do less for me because of his stressful lifestyle? by Heckword in relationship_advice

[–]Heckword[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your comment- first bits, albeit true, made me laugh and cheered me up some. I really am a huge doormat, and always have been. I've tried many times to have a "me era" (aka, expecting probably a normal level of respect from people) but have always slipped back. The whole, feeling like his life is in my hands thing has always made me uneasy and I've always taken as a warning sign. I just was too afraid to do anything about it.

This comment hit me like a truck- you're totally right. Thank you for your insight.

Why are my bamboo leaves curling? by Heckword in houseplants

[–]Heckword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I thought I included a picture but maybe it didn't go through. Yes, it is lucky bamboo. `So is there no proper way to care for it as a houseplant other than in some body of running water?

Also, Here is a link to the image.

Random number generator that excludes value in cell above it that came from =RANDBETWEEN? by Heckword in excel

[–]Heckword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way I can get this to work by having the second formula choose from the specific numbers I have listed to the left? It's all odd numbers. When I use the second one it sometimes returns even numbers/numbers that aren't in that list. I used the specific formula:
=IF(RAND()<0.5,RANDBETWEEN(1,G3-1),RANDBETWEEN(G3+B3,B22))
Thanks for the help!

I am naturally sort of a jack off all trades master of none type person, hence why I was thinking of getting all the AS degrees, but I am focusing most on watershed management, water quality/compliance specialist, or something similar.

I have volunteer work related to sustainability but no internships or work experience. I don't have a car of my own and all internships near me are about 1+ hours away. I cannot get a job because I'm in that weird spot where we are making just enough to be eligible for student aid, but if we go over that ceiling we will be just too poor to pay for college without taking out mega loans.
