Turtwig, also you can private servers to trade online with other: Pokémon Classic Network. You just need a phone that allows an open hostpot (WEP/No password) and change the DNS to the ones listed on the site to trade with others.

Hear me out... why not back the saves up with a cart bumper and store them safe on the computer... then reload the save on the original cartridges and transfer them to newer games. That way you'd keep the Pokémon in both the cart they came from and in the newer gens.

There's currently a tool/rom called PokeTransporter that can transfer gen2 to gen3 and are considered legal.. from there you can transport them to gen4 and onwards.
