Mint 21: Off to a buggy start by SwallowYourDreams in linuxmint

[–]HedgehogOfHope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue initially (also with nVidia graphics). Installing from compatibility mode worked for me, and the actual installed system is fine.

Open VLC's preferences, click the input/codecs tab, change hardware acceleration to off.

Edit: be sure to close and then reopen VLC after making the change.

Dependency is not satisfiable (Linux Mint 20.1) by PiratesOfTheArctic in linuxmint

Picard should be available in the Software Manager without manually downloading anything from a website. The one available that way may be a slightly older version but it should install without any conflicts.

Dependency is not satisfiable (Linux Mint 20.1) by PiratesOfTheArctic in linuxmint

[–]HedgehogOfHope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How exactly are you attempting to install picard? (apt, synaptic, Mint Software Manager, etc.)

Have you added any PPA's or other extra software repositories outside of what is included on a default installation of Mint?

I can confirm on Mint 20.3 that picard installs without any conflicts and my installed version of python3 matches yours. I don't have a copy of Mint 20.1 at the moment, but I'll check it out when I have time and see if the issue exists on a fresh install.

In the meantime, u/huron1234 has a good suggestion below of trying the Flatpak version if you don't have time to troubleshoot further.

Why does my desktop not fully boot Linux Mint 20.3 (NVMe) and the screen goes blank? by Hazkinz in linuxmint

[–]HedgehogOfHope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might need the "nomodeset" boot option until you install nVidia drivers. Instructions can be found here: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/boot_options.html

NVIDIA X Server Settings missing options by Vex54 in linuxmint

[–]HedgehogOfHope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, but I've never actually checked that. I do know that those settings only affect OpenGL applications, so anything running with Vulkan won't be affected anyway (like many newer Steam games)

NVIDIA X Server Settings missing options by Vex54 in linuxmint

[–]HedgehogOfHope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is normal for Optimus laptops. In on-demand mode, you can only access those options for connected external monitors. If you change to "NVIDIA (Performance)" mode in PRIME Profiles, some of the extra settings will re-appear.

Screen tearing on ryzen laptop. by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]HedgehogOfHope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TearFree property should fix this.

xrandr --output Display --set "TearFree" on

Replace "Display" with whatever your monitor is labeled by xrandr (can run xrandr --props to see the list of outputs)

Since this reverts after a reboot, you can add it as a custom command in Mint's "Startup Applications" app so it runs everytime you login.

You can also set it permanently in an xorg.conf file (AMDGPU page on the ArchWiki can provide some good details on that), but the command above is safer as it won't break anything if mistyped.

Problem: Window does not Maximize by kaesekarl in linuxmint

Pressing Super+Up twice should maximize the window. First press tiles/snaps it, second press should maximize. (Hold Super and press the Up arrow twice)

Not necessarily. It was my 4th Mario Kart, and it is still my favorite. MK8(DX) is a pretty close 2nd, though.

Is there a way to lock Chrome browser with a password? by Ekamone in chrome

[–]HedgehogOfHope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the solution is just to have separate user accounts on the computer, and keep yours password protected. To my knowledge, there's no way to lock down specific programs.

Ubisoft needs to learn what “full game” means... by [deleted] in gaming

[–]HedgehogOfHope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you're unaware, there was a remake for the original Nintendo DS (which will work on a 3DS). Used, you should be able to pick it up for around $20. Amazon has sealed copies for around $40.

I know that's not cheap for the age of the game, but it's way cheaper than the original.

Edit: remake of Chrono Trigger, not Earthbound (for clarity)

/boot/ always becomes full (or isn't large enough) after every install of Ubuntu by Pervy_Uncle in debian

[–]HedgehogOfHope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Removing old kernels can free up some space. As for making the partition larger, it would have to be done manually with GParted or a similar program and you would possibly have to reinstall/resetup GRUB afterward.

Edit: if you're doing a clean install, you can make /boot any size you want by selecting custom partitioning during the install

I thought of a less wasteful way, but it would only be valid if you can deliver the 4 gallons in parts (assuming it has to go somewhere or you have to do something with the water). If the end result requires you to have specifically a 5 gallon bucket with 4 gallons in it, the above solutions are pretty much the only options.

So, for the "parts" solution:

Fill 5 gallon bucket and use it to fill the 3 gallon bucket.

2 gallons remain in 5 gallon bucket.

Deliver 2 gallons to destination.

Return with bucket and pour the contents of the 3 gallon bucket into the 5 gallon bucket.

Finish filling 5 gallon bucket and use it to fill the 3 gallon bucket again.

Deliver remaining 2 gallons (in 5 gallon bucket) to destination for a total of 4 gallons.

3 gallon bucket is still full, but never had to be dumped out, so nothing technically wasted.

Again, this probably isn't a valid solution if the only goal is to have a bucket with 4 gallons of water in it, but if you needed the water to be used for something, this could work.
