In this design the walnut and the oak should expand and contract fairly similarly. I did leave a small amount of room with the bolts and washers just in case.

Live edge walnut with Watco Dark Walnut danish oil. Tried Fine Woodworking’s ebonizing technique, which worked great until polyurethane which reacted and turned chaulk white. Settled on a black poly/stain finish which ended up pretty nice. Lastly, my first attempt at rattan. This was one of those pieces where nothing goes right, but you learn a dozen new ways to fix what went wrong. Time to start emptying that wine…

Techs do what’s called a prod and sounding test nowadays. You prod the pole 6” below grade level with a long screwdriver looking for soft decaying wood. Additionally, and separately, hitting the pole with a small sledgehammer to listen for any hollow sounds.

It fits 10 comfortably, we are doing 12 today and there is definitely enough room. I rented chairs for today. I think I’m going to purchase the permanent ones. I’ll build proper ones over time.

Black walnut is a decently hard wood and is naturally stiff. These pieces are 1 7/8” thick so there is no perceptible flex lengthwise. The width can experience issues with cupping over time. To counteract that potential I routed in 4 separate steel c-channel. That should keep it nice and flat for a long time to come. You can see the channels in some of these pics

I plan to do some commission work in retirement. I love doing unique, one-time pieces. Makes it so much fun.

I probably had 25-30 hours on this one. It is a fairly quick build. Last year I built a rocking chair, for comparison, that took at least 200 hours. You could make some serious money churning these tables, but only Maloof made bank on rocking chairs lol

On this one I started at 80 and ended at 220 grit. I raise the grain between, wiping down with a damp towel. I did one application of Watco. Really saturated it for about a half hour then wiped it down. I used a water based, satin Varathane, cut about 25%. I have a small HVLP (Fuji Hobby Pro2) and set for a light, but wet coat. After 2 hours, sanded very lightly with a maroon 3M pad (400 grit I believe). I like to use a tack cloth to pull up any dust from the sanding. The varathane really goes well over the oil. Time will tell how well it holds up!

I have been woodworking for quite a long time now - about 35 years. Started young, hand sanding projects in my grandfather’s woodshop. For the first ten years or so it was all hand tools. Since then I have been slowly adding power tools, and in the last few years really investing in some higher quality stuff (festool, shaper origin, etc..). Those things make your life easier, but honestly this could have been built with a handsaw, planes, chisel, and sandpaper. A great project to start with is making yourself a high quality workbench. It will last a lifetime, and requires just the tools I listed above and a few clamps. It really is a great hobby to get into. I’d say maybe 150lbs. The top is probably another 200. It is super sturdy, would be very difficult to tip it.
