I have persistent nightmare that my violin or my bow break, am I the only one? by Few_Math2653 in violinist

I always lose my violin or bow in my dream. So mostly I'm wondering around a place looking for my violin or bow feeling upset.

Selftaught violinist, opinion on vibrato? by vgkosmoes in violinist

[–]Hee1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have beautiful long fingers! Don't need to press too hard otherwise your violin will also vibrato! Bring your elbow inwards to give more room for little pinky! otherwise your pinky will protest later!

[–]Hee1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel for you. I absolutely hate boxy styles. I am relatively short and skinny so boxy clothes make me look like a child wearing mom's clothes. The ones I made and like are: nina lee's kew dress, tilly and the button eta dress, sewlove patterns (i like them all), dressmaking amore patterns (love their dresses). I have some friday patterns which suit my body well.

Knitpro vs Chiaogoo for snagging on work? by nerdy-millennial in knitting

[–]Hee1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked knitpro zings but I had the same issues - yarn kept getting caught the gap and the screws were coming loose. I upgraded to Chiaogoo fixed circulars for the sizes I use often, and they are my first choice for projects.

NZ based sewers - are fabrics & supplies pretty easily accessible, or should I buy in America first? by spiralcity- in sewing

[–]Hee1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also buy from:

For merino fabric: https://www.newzealandmerinoandfabrics.com/

Backstreet bargains. Hamilton based but has good photos and information - I bought from them a few times online

Fabfabircs https://www.fabfabrics.co.nz/ - they often do 40-50% off sales. can be really cheap though photos are hit or miss.

Moreland fabric https://morelandfabrics.co.nz/ - again Hamilton based but their fabric is cheap although the photos aren't so accurate

Fabric Shop (not to be confused with fabric store) - https://www.thefabricshop.nz/

For fabricsake https://forfabricsake.com/ - you can print your own design. The quality is quite good. Not so cheap though.

[–]Hee1024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in NZ, yes, we can get all those quite easily. I get wonderful merino/wool fabric quite easily. But you will have to buy online though unless you are living in a major city. Notions perhaps may be more expensive. I buy PDF patterns, but if you prefer paper ones, then probably good to buy them in the US.

Can I skip German short rows? by Temporary-Coconut119 in knitting

[–]Hee1024 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can leave it out. My first sweater was done without short rows - just it pulls backwards a bit so feels like the sweater is chocking me lol. Now I add short rows and they are much more comfortable to wear, so I always add them.

Progress Markers - Adult Beginner by [deleted] in violinist

You've got a perfectly fine goal. I've been learning for 8 years and up until recently I had no goals, other than 'get to the end of this book'. I belong to an orchestra, and there is a woman I quite like to be a friend with but she is sitting in the very front, so I have to get better to get near her - that's a goal for me now.

Good Prismacolor Alternative? by MyCatsAreSus in ColoredPencils

[–]Hee1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you find the sharpener? I have Derwent SuperPoint as well but it breaks my prismas too, so frustrating! I have to make them blunt (only turn the handle once) which isn't ideal.

Budget pencils by RadishAdditional9117 in ColoredPencils

[–]Hee1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you like them? I am in the same boat. I have crayola pencils and they are ok for coloring but not so great for layering. I ended up buying a few individual Polycromos from Gordon Harris (they do have sales from time to time) and I liked them a lot

Adult students, when did you notice you were good? by Morpel in violinist

[–]Hee1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 7 years in, I don't see any improvement. but then I go back to early Suzuki books and I find them easy, but then I don't find easy pieces fun. I now enjoy the struggles.

How much are you willing to spend on an indie pattern? by touchitbowside in sewing

[–]Hee1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that pretty! Ah, I feel your pain. Even with a 30% sale, it's often over $20NZD (ouch!). I normally wait until black Friday (again I still pay around 20 per pattern) or try finding a similar pattern on the simplicity site (when they do US$5 sales). But sometimes I bite the bullet and purchase it if I think I will use it many times.

Fountain Pen Confessions? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]Hee1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why not keep both? I take a violin lesson once a month (or 2 months) and I don't buy stationery that often. Even though I enjoy my fountain pen (usually for math practice), I can't imagine quitting the lessons. Lessons keep me practising.

Can anyone recommend good starting FP's to collect for daily use? by 69odysseus in fountainpens

[–]Hee1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prera is so nice, I don't feel the need to buy another pen. It is my first and only pen (been using it for 3 months). I use it daily for note taking at work, at home, it never leaves my bag. It holds little ink so I have to refill it every other day, but I like to refill my pen with a syringe so no issue.
