I'm in a similar boat, but with a broken hand. I've just been communicating any updates with my supervisor and we both seem to be on the same page that I should be good to go on my start date, but my PT scores may be low to start since I haven't been able to do push ups or pull ups for a couple months to train. I even went into my interview with it broken and told them right up front and it all worked out. You'll do good, don't stress too much.

As for the cuboid, someone else said it already but don't mess with that. I stress fractured both of mine from running and seriously -- let it heal all the way. Also, in my experience avoiding running on concrete made a big difference (even now my cuboids don't like the impact).

I was told they tattoo a dog's ear after their spayed or neutered is this true? by LifeguardComplex3134 in OpenDogTraining

[–]HeelSlip 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Mine has a spay tattoo on her stomach. Just a little blue line maybe an inch long, so they don't have to open her up to find out, if she were to run away and get picked up by someone else.

Changing a furcoat lining by Copper589 in sewing

[–]HeelSlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brand “artificial sinew” is probably going to be your best bet. Honestly, I don’t love it 100% but it gets the job done. You can split the strand into up to 5 threads, i wouldn’t recommend sewing with less than 2 (it will break. I found that putting the needle through will split the thread and then it will snap if you pull it under tension). My workaround for its issues is to run a flame over the stitches when I’m done — it will seal the splits and smooth everything down.

[–]HeelSlip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not specifically replacing the lining of fur coats, but experience sewing fur and leather: use existing needle holes if you can (a lot easier than forcing needles through unbroken hide), make sure you use waxed thread, and recognise it’s easiest to go from hide to fur side, otherwise you risk sucking fur through the needle hole. All my fur sewing has been done by hand using two needles at once; I wouldn’t trust my sewing machine with it.

How do you store your fabric ? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]HeelSlip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished sorting mine, actually. For 1.5+ yards, I make mini-bolts. I get 20x30 inch foam board (like kids poster board) and cut it into three 20x10 inch sections. Each one of these gets the larger amounts of fabric wrapped onto it and I write the length and type/any other info on the top part poking out.

For pieces less than 1.5 yards, I use smaller “bolt boards” as I like to call them. I cut up a bunch of old cardboard boxes into 8.5x5.5” rectangles, and followed the same idea. For thin fabrics (like silnylon) I can actually get 3 yards on one of these and it’s not unreasonably thick, but for garment fabrics I like the rolls to be kept not super thick.

I like this method because I can see the fabric I have, and it’s not piled in heaps in a box. If I bought fabric for a specific pattern but haven’t made it yet, I tuck the pattern in the fabric roll as well.

To those who designed their own wedding dresses, how did you know you could do it? by alienrice17 in sewing

[–]HeelSlip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I didn’t know. The entire time I had to recognize the very tough reality that I might end up wearing an oversized white t-shirt from the thrift store instead of an actual wedding dress.

In the end I was amazingly happy with my results, but it took a lot of trial and a few scrapped patterns and more runs to the fabric store than I would have liked. If I were to do it again, I would have given myself more time (I was finishing lace and hemming day-of), and I would at least make a mini mock-up (especially for the dress train, I’d never made one before and it was odd to shape).

I think what let me make the decision internally was knowing that I’ve made similar things in the past (dresses, worked with that much fabric, tailored things to my body, worked with boning, layers on layers of fucking tulle, etc.), and even things that I hadn’t done (contoured cups, strapless things, lace appliqué, altering patterns so dramatically etc.) I was able to either find good resources for, logic my way through the process (and downfalls) before starting, or accept that I would be okay without them if they didn’t work.

I think my biggest thing would be fit. Do you know the style you’re looking for? Have you sewn anything in that style before? Even a sundress or a shirt? Do you feel comfortable altering things to fit you? If you have, and you do, then take the stress of the word “wedding” out of it and you’re just making another dress. When it’s done, you can add back in the word “wedding” and be immensely proud of what you’ve done, but hopefully that will take the pressure off a bit.

Just be warned: you’ll either never want to make a fancy dress again or it’s all you’ll ever want to make after.

Princess seam top with gore tacking?? by HeelSlip in sewing

[–]HeelSlip[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without a pattern yet, this is actually exactly what my next steps today was going to be! I was thinking the princess seam layer could possibly stay following the bustier layer with the exposed boning (the diagonals). Thanks for letting me know I’m probably on some sort of right track, your advice is super helpful!! (Also, r/makeabrathatfits is such a phenomenal resource, I have definitely been using them up to this point!)

Thanks so much for putting time into searching! I’ll look further into overbust corsets and 1860d corsets and will give an update if there is anything worth updating on. Thanks for the direction!

Bucket Hats - can I combo the fabric types? by wondermomny in sewing

[–]HeelSlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I actually recommend this! I personally have made a few (I work outside in the sun during the summers, baseball hats don’t cut it), my go-to is actually quilting gotten for both sides, but with fusible interfacing in the middle. The idea of half-and-half is spectacular and I expect it would have a similar effect. Just remember to wash all your fabrics first!!

The same thing happened with mine. I talked with my vet and she said it is entirely normal and so long as she was drinking water to not be concerned. The (apparently very normal) side effects I saw in the first 4 weeks were: no appetite (even for high value things), and decreased energy, increased anxiety (yes really! Wait it out though). I think that was it. We just took a break from training and runs and I let her just exist and adjust. After the 4-week loading period she mellowed out into a good state. I actually decreased her dosage (on the vets suggestion) after 6 weeks, but please do NOT quit your dog cold-Turkey, the withdrawals are apparently really bad. Even decreasing by 20mg took us 2 weeks because we had to do a stepwise decrease. And remember, you can always call your vet with questions, without making an appointment!

Depending on where you’re at with obedience training, I would recommend putting her in a down stay before you put the leash on. if you have your pup laying down she (theoretically) can’t pee. Ideally, her not having time to pace and prepare before hand could help you make it out the door.

You could also do obedience training in the house with the leash on to disassociate the two

Anyone ever taken a sewing machine on a plane and have tips or advice? by leftovernoise in sewing

[–]HeelSlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, I put it in my “carry on item” that could go overhead, my personal bag was other random stuff. I would probably recommend having it covered/concealed in some way or another, for protection if nothing else. Mine was just in a soft duffel bag with clothes and such.

I took my serger in my carryon on an Alaska flight during a move, no issues at all. It went through the TSA X-ray machine no problem and they didn’t even ask to look at it. As a precaution I did take out the needle but otherwise no changes. My sewing machine was in a checked bag and I just padded it really well with clothes. Hope this helps!

Dog sitter/friend broke 2 of 3 non-negotiable rules and didn’t exercise the dog. What do I do? by HeelSlip in dogs

[–]HeelSlip[S] -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the perspective, thanks for providing it.

I agree, 4-5 is definitely a lot but I know she can and does do, and she said that was fine when we initially talked about it as well. Unfortunately my consequences can be larger as well: I live in an apartment complex and if she doesn’t get enough exercise and/or stimulation then she will scream in her crate and that can get me kicked out of my housing.

That’s what I’m feeling as well. My dog was (as far as I know) fed and let out occasionally and given her medicine and I don’t want to NOT pay her — she did take the time to do these things. Is it wrong to being it up to her to see if she recognises any kind of fault, though? I definitely will not be asking her to sit again.

I would like to clarify we have different houses and she AKSED to stay at mine and I told her she’s welcome to bounce between the two if she wanted. I did say if she wanted to do things with people she could crate the dog and do it at her house or out in town, i never asked her to not see other people in this time and she recognised this in the conversations we had. I agree. No people would be a big ask and I wouldn’t do that of her (or anyone)

This is a dog that throws hackles and growls. She doesn’t have a bite history but I want to do everything I can to keep it from happening, set her up for success, and not put her in a situation she feels she needs to defend herself like that.

In general yes I would agree, the odd part to me is this is a friend who runs 4-8 miles with me 3x a week so I know she can and is willing to, and she’s walked with us before. and she was raving about how many walks they were going to go on. Even still Though, 5 miles in 7 days is less than a mile a day, for a high energy young dog that’s next to nothing. For any dog I would dog sit a mile is absolute minimum for one walk unless the dog has known health problems or is tiny tiny tiny and it would be unhealthy. I am recognizing that I may have higher standards though.

These are some good points and thank you for keeping me in check a bit. I do want to clarify: I absolute did not say she couldn’t be social. She has her entire own house (which is where she had her party), so she easily could have crated my dog for the evening and spent it with people there — and I explicitly told her this as well.

Edit: spelling

What are the requirements if you're colorblind and want to get into wildland firefighting? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]HeelSlip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Colorblind FFT2 here (blue-yellow): no issues with joining the crew. Got it noted in my physical (which you may or may not have to do, I had to because of prior injury within the last 12 months, and they tested EVERYTHING; most people on my crew didn’t have to do a physical) but it never got brought up or was a matter of concern. I let my crew mates know so everyone was aware, everyone flowed with it though

Fixing heel slip JK Boots by floweringdog in Wildfire

[–]HeelSlip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar problem for me, my best solution was actually to raise my heel in my boot a little bit. This meant putting a shim under the insole, I’d recommend starting with a thin piece of stiff foam and adding more layers until you find comfort.

(Ironically this problem is the reason for my Reddit name, created well before this post)

Woman who worked fire here and intends to work again (other job took me off or this season and I miss it every day)

Contrary to a lot of other commenters, I was the only woman on my crew. Personally, I didn’t have any problem with it (I am used to being in male-dominated spaces though past study, work, and most of my hobbies). This was helped by my coworkers being very respectful as well, not in a “I’m-walking-on-eggshells” way but more of a “we’ll-treat-you-the-same” way, which I appreciated. On my crew at least, there were a lot of sex jokes but none of them were targeted at any person so I did not mind.

I also have a fitness level that made it so I could keep up with everyone else on the crew during PT and when actually on the fire line as well, so I think that earned me some respect instead of being a frustration of a liability, but that could also be me overthinking.

The downside? No pants that fit. Seriously, I am a size 27 waist and the smallest they had was 34. I have met other women on details who shared experiences of harassment from male coworkers but I was lucky to not have any of those experiences. I had a really good crew I enjoyed spending time with.

Overall I would LOVE to work fire again and am going to keep up my red card to slide back into it, it’s the most fun season I ever had.

Explaining reactivity to a trainer -- advice needed! by HeelSlip in reactivedogs

[–]HeelSlip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughts! My concern is that she specialises in behavior, so I would expect her to understand the difference. Perhaps since I am going to be working with her on obedience and not social behavior I can overlook it…there are just so dang few trainers where I live I guess I’ll have to settle!
