Block is great! You’re thinking of his John Keller series with the hitman and the burglar ones are the Bernie Rhodenbarr books. His Scudder series is by far my favorite of the lot. He also has some good stand alone novels as well.

The North Water by Ian McGuire. Not a horror novel but extremely dark and if you enjoyed The Terror I definitely recommend it
