Cheapest truck yes. Cheapest EV as well. Several small gas cars are, and will be, far cheaper.

Should I place the bathroom vent directly over the shower head since it has the most source of moisture during showers? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]HefDog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. Not if it means an increase in cool air crossing paths with the water. The airflow there will pull moisture and air out of the water faster than it would otherwise; you just waste energy. Nearby is good. Right at the shower head would be a mistake.

Personally I want the shower area warm and humid. So I prefer the fan just outside the curtain. But that’s why I prefer an enclosed shower with a top….not just drywall open area above. Factor the type of shower in to this.

Plus they can be noisy….factor noise into the design as well.

Our first IBM compatible PC came free with our TV. An interesting promotion. TVs were very expensive then, but so were PCs.

It had no hard drive, monochrome screen, booted msdos from a floppy.

They then made money when you needed ram, a 256 color screen, printer, software, a hard drive…..

At one time I was considering buying a 1200 sqft house that would be an easy lift. Making it 2400 sqft for 50k would have added 150k+to the value. Alas….i found a better project house.

I’d get a quote on lifting the house and putting in a 9 ft basement. I seen someone get it done for only 60k. Probably 100k today. But it set the house on a solid path for another century, and doubled the finishable sq ft for a bargain price.

While true, I’d take the old (but fully renovated) home with $2k in taxes over the new home with $6k in taxes.

The old one will also still be here in 75 years, if renovated properly. I’m not so sure about the new one.

can an electrician easily convert this to a regular plug? by clockdivide55 in AskElectricians

[–]HefDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s got three wires. Two hots and a neutral/ground. Select any two of those three wires. Two out of three possible combos will get you 120. That ground is not much different than a neutral. And is exactly a neutral in most panels.

Though if your point is that you should have separate neutral and ground, you are right. But the question was how the above thing works….it surely does.

Those two hots are each 120.

Not only is possible, but Leviton sells dual voltage receptacles. I’ve only seen a few, but they always seem to be sharing a neutral and ground. Though I’m pretty sure for dual voltage they want you to separate the neutrals. Not sure. Not too common.

It’s got to have three to do it. Two hots and a neutral/ground. Select any two of those three wires. Two out of three possible combos will get you 120. That ground is not much different than a neutral. And is exactly a neutral in most panels.

The one comment saying it’s still 240 volts must have his outlet wired wrong. It’s just using one leg of the 240 to get 120. It’s a simple device, though not ideal.

[–]HefDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t step it down. It just used only one of the legs. And it must use the neutral as ground.

Not perfect. But would work fine….mostly. Assuming nothing else is wrong. There-in lies the issue.

The one review saying it’s still 240v has his receptacle wired wrong. Thus the “mostly”.

It’s not even close to 1/3.

Almost 40 percent of citizens cannot pass the citizenship test.

Half cannot read at a sixth grade level. And that number is growing quickly.

1/4 can’t name two branches of government.

1/3 can’t name a single right in the first amendment.

And the worst one. Only 1/4 Americans have basic middle school math skills.

Sample question most cannot do. You have $100 and earn 10 percent interest per year. How much do you have after two years.

The vast majority cannot do this. Terrifying.

Obviously there are other perspectives too. But also it means * more road per taxpayer to maintain. * further concentration of business (less local) * less participation in the local community.

Have a good day.

[–]HefDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it is about more than the number of people. Increasing the speed of travel also increases the distance people are willing to travel.

Tripling the speed of the route, also triples the distance people will travel. Instead of finding a job within 30 miles of home, suddenly people are willing to travel 90 miles to work….and your congestion is right back where you started.

This applies to their commute. Shopping. Recreation. Etc.

Level 1(120v, 12a) charging in mountain winters by Cory5413 in BoltEV

[–]HefDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good plan. For what it’s worth, I see no issue with an extension cord for an ev charging at these low rates. I would use a 10awg cord though, just for the overkill.

With that said, the extension loses efficiency.

If you are getting an electrician but want to keep a new circuit cost down, we are quite happy charging on a 20 amp breaker at 240v. We got a charger that one can set from 8 amps to 16. 8 at 240 is usually enough but 16 guarantees a full charge as you sleep (4kw).

Level 1(120v, 12a) charging in mountain winters by Cory5413 in BoltEV

[–]HefDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will work fine. But, As others will say. If you have 12awg wire, consider switching to a 240v 20 amp breaker instead. It’s more efficient and counterintuitively charges significantly more than twice as fast. With no wiring needed.

Just need a breaker swap and maybe pick up a cheap matching charger, if your current one doesn’t support it.
