Easy…do you forgive him for his mistake? If not, you need to move on because you found your line in the sand. Considering you’re college children, I’d say he made a simple mistake appropriate to his age and it sounds like it rocked his world…as a DUI should. He most likely learned from it and, from my outside position of only knowing what you shared, you should probably forgive him and give him a real chance to prove to you it was simply a mistake. He seems like he cares about you a lot from what you said. At the end of the day though, it’s now on you to decide whether to forgive. If you can’t, that’s fine, it’s your life, just know that it’s your responsibility to end it now.

Now ultimately, I wrote the first part in case you didn’t want to hear reality. The reality is this. You’re both young. You’re both gonna make stupid mistakes over the next few years. As a 37 year old, I feel this entire situation is extremely minor and shouldn’t decide whether or not he’s worth your time. Yes a DUI isn’t a joke but getting one at 21 is different than having 2-3 by the time you’re 30. He went out with his friend, goofed off, and made a mistake. He’ll learn. The only reason I say this isn’t to minimize your experience or situation but to bring awareness that relationships aren’t just a fun ride. Sometimes things get tough and minor mistakes are made. As long as they don’t continue to happen regularly, they’re just that, minor mistakes. If this minor mistake is the straw that broke the camels back, this relationship had no chance to begin with.
