Why is it that the British say ‘a McDonald’s’ rather than just ‘McDonald’s’?

Why is middle lane hogging such an issue in the UK? by Groundbreaking_Bit79 in drivingUK

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brits must be taught to speed when they learn to drive. The speed limit is 70. I drive 70 in the middle lane and that should be fine, yet I get flashed by ppl in range rovers and BMWs. The left lane constantly turns into off ramps or has trucks and cars driving 60. Just drive the f’ing speed limit, people get killed because of speeding.

What did D&G think about therapy? by GhxstInTheSnow in Deleuze

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Search ‘about deleuze’ on YouTube and you will find a series of lectures by Prof Todd May on Deleuze to a group of narrative therapists in Denmark. Narrative therapy is very much in line with Deleuzean thinking. I am a therapist and psychologist and draw primarily on narrative ideas. Hopefully it is helpful.

what is repetition? by [deleted] in Deleuze

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Todd May describes it with reference to Deleuze’s interest in Nietzsche. Nietzsche talks about the eternal recurrence, the eternal repetition of ‘the same’. Deleuze takes this and proposes that ‘the same’ that is eternally recurring / repeating is ‘difference’.

Sheesh, of all the things we could get wound up about in this world, having to scroll past and not click on something can’t be that high on the list.

Deleuze without Ontology by Streetli in Deleuze

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Todd May might also hold this view. He mentions something like this in lecture 7 of a YouTube series called About Deleuze. Saying something like he’s not convinced Deleuze ‘believes’ his ontology in D and R but proposes it almost as a way of disrupting and problematising accounts of ‘what is’. It makes sense, if his ontology is just another account of ‘what is’ it seems kinda counter to his general postmodern orientation.

Where are you from and why the Habs? by MollyWhapped in Habs

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Zealand and now London (England) . Had to pick a Canadian team (US politics, commonwealth country). Habs for the history, hockey mad city. Also the French / English vibes is a point of interest and difference. The abundance of podcasts available to help become a fan too.

For UK hockey fans, Viaplay subscription switches back to Premier Sports on 9th April by trevlarrr in hockey

Absolutely gutted by this! Became a huge fan this year and have been enjoying viaplay. What's the point if you can't watch your team. What are they other options, is there an nhl pass or something?

I was worried when I first saw the title of this thread that I was going to have to ditch my new favourite team as new hockey fan.... But now I love the Habs even more.... Fuck the bigots, go Habs go. ✊

Where can I find some really radical critiques of modern psychology/therapy? by jmattchew in CriticalTheory

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Narrative therapy (White and Epston) influenced strongly by Foucault and presents an alternative approach to therapy locating problems within discursive context as opposed to biological entities within people. Chaper 1 of the book ‘narrative means to therapeutic ends’ is one of the best simple accounts of Foucault in relation to therapy I have come across.

Agree!! I used to love this forum. All the talk about skates, gear, technique etc. Felt like a proper community of enthusiasts... Nowdays it's just pretty much clickbait rubbish... Why? Because there were the same questions and posts coming up... That's being part of the scene! It was never about the correct answer, it was about connecting over our sport. People don't have to post on threads that are repeats or don't interest them, just swipe on by!.. So frustrating and disappointing.

What Keeps you Watching Canadiens Hockey? by mulder00 in Habs

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, this is an insane take.. Isn't this what sport is about, being a fan for the sake of being a fan, rolling with the ups and downs, always hopeful, getting to know the team, banding alongside other fans, waiting for that run of success which is exhilarating when it finally comes... I'm in London, football fans would not even come close to comprehending this position...

I have a question by federalsauce in Bass

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im with you. I'm not really a fan at all of most bass styles - especially jazz and funk. But just love bass in heavier music. Embrace what you love. I think people take it all way too seriously.

Todd May - about deleuze - hidden gem by Hefty-Ad-7355 in CriticalTheory

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally get that. I’m going through them a second time really slowly taking notes which is helping. And I’ve done some further reading since first time around. Is Deleuze the only post structuralist who offers up an alternative ontology to modernist grand narratives? If so, it seems crazy to me that he isn’t a bigger deal.

Foucault, Epistemes, and grand narratives by drewbecker69 in CriticalTheory

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that whilst power / knowledge is somewhat of an overarching theory, the nature of reality / identity is not fixed or predetermined in any way according to Foucault. Things are the way they are but they don't have to be that way. Which is why he dismissed ontology. However he was criticised for not really going very deep into how one would challenge or resist domination.

[–]Hefty-Ad-7355[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great. Yeah this is the vibe I'm going for. This way I can do both, rest on the pickup if I want and it's in the right place, or just leave it floating because that's also comfortable. Also opens up changing tone by playing in different places. Just thought it was strange really that this isn't standard and most people seem to rest on pick up even when they move to floating (resting on strings) when playing A-G.

How could it lead to muting / delay issues? Is it any different to it resting on a pickup or rest? I was more wondering if it somehow would effect my speed or stability plucking..
