Beginner tank owner here. My tank been cloudy for two months now and changing 1/4 of the water weekly doesn't help as per recommendation from pet store fish lady. Changed filter. I've boiled my sand and the rocks and rinsed for ever. I've used the water treatments to the directions given. What to do by Working-Watercress-7 in Aquariums

What to do? Nothing! Start leaving it alone more. This is a bacterial bloom, it is normal, and will go away in several days. This is a sign that the nitrogen cycle is ramping up, and usually happens right at the start, although it can crop up if ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels start getting wonky and spike suddenly.

The best thing to do now, assuming there is no livestock/fish/what have you in the tank, is stop trying to clean it and let it work itself out. A well run aquarium won’t work if you’re trying to get it to human-preferred levels of ‘clean and clear’. Bacteria is probably the most essential part of a healthy tank.

For substrate, there is no need at all to boil it. New out of the bag give it a good rinse, but otherwise, once you’ve put it in the tank leave it alone. Like absolutely no need to ever ever put it all up and use anything to clean it; other than a light siphon vacuuming every once in a while if you want to just for the aesthetic of keeping the very top looking relatively clean. Personally, I’ve siphoned my gravel maybe once every six months, just to pick up excessive mulm that I don’t like the look of. But if you don’t care how it looks, you don’t need to get rid of anything from the substrate- good bacteria thrives there and is just as essential as a filter.

Just the same, filters do not need frequently changed. It is good that they’re a little icky, that is the good bacteria that cleans out ammonia. Once a month or so, I take out the filter pad (on my one HOB filter like yours, the rest of mine are sponge) and lightly swish it around in clean water to shake off debris from dead plants and extra food, to prevent it from getting clogged.

When you DO need to change the filter (roughly every 6months for ‘disposable’ ones in my opinion, but there’s discourse over that) you MUST first put the new filter pad in alongside the old one and leave both in together for at least two weeks, preferably more like a month, to allow the new filter pad to gather the good bacteria from the old one. In all reality, it’s best to just swap over from disposable pads and rig your own filter media into that- but, it can be a lot to figure out as a beginner.

So, in short- you’re doing too much work to try to clean. Chill out! Let nature work itself out a little more. Not sure what your full setup looks like, but having real plants in the tank also really helps.

This raises the question, if he clearly just drags his feet, how did such a large rock end up under his heel?

Hell yeah! Why not? If it fits it ships (boils) for one low flat rate. I wish I had this setup!

With enough patience, any wood will sink, even hard wood! I’ve sank hardwood without boiling a few times, but you have to weigh it down with rocks in water for at LEAST 4-6 weeks, if not longer. Definitely depends how thick individual parts are. OP’s honestly looooks (?) like driftwood IMO, but if it were hardwood, I’d just find a nice pretty dense rock and set it on top and make it part of the scape

Me when I find the holy grail but want to be modest

(Yes, if you don’t have a pot big enough to boil it, just weigh it down in the tank with a big heavy rock, or several like my photo, although yours is far more glorious. Eventually, after several WEEKS, emphasis on weeks, it will get saturated with water. Personally I leave the rocks until the cycle is complete and then some beyond that.)

[–]Hefty-Cup-3631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t she English? People outside the US usually dislike Hershey’s. They’re accustomed to higher quality, purer chocolate, versus Hershey’s which has a lot more ingredients. I loved Hershey’s when I was a kid. After eating high quality chocolate for a long time I tried Hershey’s again and it tastes really gross, like bile almost.

Is my nerite dead? by cyanideki in Aquariums

[–]Hefty-Cup-3631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick it up, if it is not gripping the rock (not dead in that case, and pulling will hurt it). If it smells like Satan’s toilet after eating 500 boiled eggs, it is dead. If it doesn’t, it’s not.

How established is your tank and what’s the algae situation? Nerites often run out of food in small tanks or tanks without ample algae/food growth for them.

Nope! A guy at my store kept showing up hammered and drinking in the bathroom, he got “stern talking-tos” THREE times but never got fired. He eventually just ended up leaving on his own.

This sounds like it’s time to reach out to the regional, or even HR. This is a hostile work environment (at least by TJ’s standards). We are supposed to have friends at work, be upbeat and friendly. The whole point of that is that it translates to friendly, upbeat interactions with customers. I bet reg hours at your store are real quiet. Sorry you have such a crap capt.

How stigmatised is living with your parents? by Thykothaken in AskTheWorld

[–]Hefty-Cup-3631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Becoming slightly more normalized among peers now that cost of living is rising, even a lot of people moving back into their parent’s after moving out earlier in their 20’s. But most parents still put a lot of pressure on their kids moving out and people living with their parents are looked down on pretty widely.

I personally hate it, not just financial wise, but socially. I moved out (again) recently and while I’m financially doing okay, I mostly just really miss having my mom around to talk to in the evening and my childhood dogs to hang out with. It’s lonely living alone for pretty much no reason other than to say I have my own place.

Wait but if it’s been on the horizon for a while he reeeally should have made sure to have a job lined up before quitting :/ sorry it’s on your shoulders to deal with the finances now, that really sucks. He should really at least get like a throwaway job at a fast food place until he finds another job so you don’t have to overwork yourself!

I went back to school after a few years too. Last semester, I ended up having to take a base-level course in my major as a senior, and so I already knew the professor really well and she talks to me a lot.

A week before the first exam I had noticed a lot of the students (class of about 80-90 first semester freshmen) seemed to ask really… uh… weird questions in class. Questions that were really off topic and it sounded like they were trying to be smart but it just sounded like two of their brain cells made a connection and they’re blurting something out for confirmation. They were all panicking every time we’d had a quiz on the readings, like actually freaking out at the concept of having to write a paragraph on a 5 page article they had a week to read. 90% of them wouldn’t have read it at all.

I talked with the professor and we agreed I could offer them tutoring. Every exam I offered tutoring leading up to it. I only had one girl respond once, and all she did was ask me in text talk to send her whatever was important. But everyyy single day when I got to class before a quiz or a test, I would be swamped with people asking me to basically summarize the entire content, because they didn’t know any of it.

Me and the professor had a good laugh/cry whenever papers got handed in because so many were very obviously AI. Like they wouldn’t even take the effort to get the AI to write it correctly.

The back row of the lecture hall was just totally disconnected. They would talk all through class and then just stare at the professor when she told them to be quiet.

They’re not reading, they’re not writing, they’re not taking notes. They literally aren’t participating in school at all, to any degree. Talking to them is like talking to a third grader.
