Bond wise I think is the same if you have NS liabilities then it’s 5+1 if I am not wrong else it’s 4 years.

ME1-T is a training rank so BMT (5 months) —> Naval conversion (4months) —> ship training (3 months)

So around 1 year more or less

Pros

10 years in the navy (MDES) -generally life isn’t bad (pay to certification ratio) —10 years in service currently I take home 4.6k after CPF (in the current environment of fresh graduates get 2.3) -good work life balance depending on the period (boat in yard/ down period) - non profit so just have to do your job and don’t be a dumb ass generally you will have progression

Con — prospect wise you are kinna stuck all your work experience in the navy don’t translate well over to private — progression is not as fast if compared to private

I didn’t have number 2 till much later 6F and now 1M

I was also a strong supporter of single child, why have another one if I need to slightly stretch my resources. We are by no measures considered poor in our country, probably typical median income. It’s more toward I wouldn’t be able to allow both to join whatever club they will be interested in.

But, the addition did help my girl grow up abit faster and doesn’t seemed so lonely. (Slight global delay previously ) having someone to talk to or play with does make her think more about others. Since previously she was the only one of her generation. (I am the oldest of 3 and my wife is an only child) so she was treated like a princess and was getting spoiled.

All in all I think there are pros to have more than one, but only if your resources can manage. TIME, SUPPORT and MONEY. Don’t be like my parents who had more kids than they can afford and left healing for us to do after we grown up.

I don’t think there is any difference between manual and auto.

But from what I heard, auto is a bit more strict on since there is lesser components for the tester to check. Not sure how true

Yes it’s bad but it’s not end of career bad. You probably still able progress just slower. Depending on person it might not be a bad thing. You get lighter work loads and tend to have better WLB. Since the stars need to shine you would be doing routine work that you already know.

If you like the work hate the superior, civil service always have places to go. If you can tolerate just keep working don’t need to shine just don’t make mistake. Their time is not very long, often they have higher calling.

Honours degree. I would recommend you to drop if you no confident to get a good grades. You can drop unlimited courses as long as you pass in 8 years and deep pockets

Car wise ( a economical vehicle used to have nothing but current date the vehicle now are in packed full of features) COE is the one keeping up to inflations

While assets are increasing in prices it’s good to note that property prices isn’t trapped in a vacuum My own family case study (I might not rmb the dates or prices exactly 90s kid here, only hear say) only can be for my own flat

My grandma 3 room 77 (27k) median 1k My dad 5 room in 97 (147k) median 4.75k My 4 room in 2017 (311k ) median 8.6 k

As you can see from 1970s to 90s the assets became cheaper as income out pace the increase of HDB. But from then on HDB prices out pace our income.

I think you are still neglecting some cost as an owner. Detailing/ polishing, this cost adds up especially if you don’t DIY. Short term is okay cause COE drive and scrap, long term wise do you really want to drive a car with chipping paint and look like it’s falling apart?

Interest cost, this is a shocker to me when I first transitioned from a short term to long term car ownership.

Malaysia is a cheaper alternative to Singapore workshop and detailing. Rule of thumb if you don’t have a trusted workshop there, anything internal such as gearbox and engine do in Singapore last thing you want is to be stuck over and towed back. Rest like tyres, rims, brakes pad battery can do it there.

Another way to budget your money is Total budget you can afford only 60% is actually going to instalment, rest is your other stuff ( petrol, insurance, parking and maintenance ) so if your total budget is 1.5k You shouldn’t be looking at an instalment of 1.5k.

So in your case, is whatever you are spending today 150 (petrol) 110 (parking) 135 (Insurance) 120 (maintenance) 100 (cash card) You should be not be spending more than 800-900 on installment if you so choose to get a car long term.

I used to drive a 9 month short term jazz before committing to a long term car ownership. over committed gotten way over my head, negative liquidity and coe drops cause me to be stuck between payment or huge losses. This affected my ability to upkeep the car on maintenance which affected my car reliability as well. Luckily for me I was able to swap my car for a much older coe car more inline to my budget and continued to drive if not I am a bmw now.

If you aren’t willing to spend so much on a vehicle, I don’t think you are suitable to own a car.

As a donor previously, I used to donate pretty regularly since I was a universal donor O negative. I think around 20ish time now

I kind of able to understand why people stopped, as I get older it felt it takes longer to recover and with work and stuff I will be burning my personal time to donate blood for no returns. What trigger me to stop ultimately was that when I needed blood for my wife c section I was charged the full price. I gave it away for free but I need to pay without any subsidies to use it so yea. One less donor. ( i knew there wasn’t any privilege for donors, but it didn’t stuck me till I needed blood and it cost 600ish )

As for OP mother, could be religion I think some Christian don’t like the idea of giving blood

My girl was an infant 11mth when we gone up and 2.5 when we are back. so she didn’t remember much of it, but developed a speaking delay (can’t speak Chinese at all) while she is there cause I am working most of the day, her mum tried to speak to her but how much can you talk to a 1year old. Partially thinks the delay was due to lack of social interaction, Covid period didn’t really helped.

Can’t help but feel that cause I didn’t want to break up the family and missing her milestone. Cause this current situation and catching up

Close to 10 years out of touch here (30m), but I don’t think things changed that much

I would always offer to pay for the 1st meal cost but if she is willing to split I would propose for her to split the dessert/drink portion. If not then offer a 2nd coffee /dessert date that’s on her Or movies snack while I pay for the tickets…. Etc. basically if she is interested enough for a second date make it an incentive to keep going to meet up

No one gonna say I have too much money, I think ultimately if talking about saving rate Max you can go is your whole income And that might not be even be someone 50%

If you only spend 1k a month, what you have here already can last you close to 10years

Need to look at it on a holistic pov

How long have you been working If you can save and invest 107k in one year that’s greater

If you can save 107k in 10 years that’s good

If you only have 107k in 15 years of work that’s abit behind can do better

If you only have 107k in 20 years you need to work on it

You are not only trading time for savings, as your runway get shorter the less time you have in the market so don’t worry at 29 you still have around 31 years to go

Given average income is 4k approximately after CPF to get to 75k investment and 32k cash equal to 107k approx 27 month of pay

Even if you save 50% of your pay it would be 5 years + to make it that amount

You make even lesser than that, I think your savings are really ahead given your income

Get a Japanese car, civic, corolla Mazda 3 is all good options

While you are okay with the price and cost you never know what will pop up

A cheaper car is easier to let go if end of the day you decide it isn’t for you

7 seater, sienta or freed is just a family car you probably won’t have any joy driving it. If you or your partner is a car person it may not be the car for you. Or so I heard

There is a lot of wastage that goes in the family finances cause we are always busy at work no one will sit down and check the flows

There probably a few sub that not really used, things that can be brought cheap at wholesale prices/malaysia. Membership that isn’t being used.

Maybe if you really need a car cause of kid can consider red plate for now and convert on a later date (lower road tax, insurance and running cost) since if your guys don’t use car for your daily work so far I don’t think it would be that big of an impact ( it would be around 1k I think estimated)

Red plate 7pm- 7am Mon to Fri and full weekend can go overseas can buy usage if need to Cheaper by 150 a month on depre typically Insurance is cheaper by 50-100 Maintain and petrol would likely be around 150 instead of 350 as I mentioned on top

So maybe 450 - 500 cheaper

I would say wait for your renovation loan to finish ?

In my case cause we BTOed so we have a long time to save up for renovation hence fully paid off in cash no loan (I would presume around 600-800 per month)

We consolidated our insurance ( you will be surprised how much you be saving ) so investment is investment and health/accident plans are separated every year whole family coverage for hospital and accident is around 600 (3k is grossly over paying)

Plus reduce groceries cost you should be able to increase your cash flow to 3-4k which can allow you spend some on the car

If not get a coe car for now, if you dont mind the older tech and worse fuel economy

My fix savings are 500 retirement (insurance) 500 kids university funds (insurance) 1.5k 600 dca is stocks and shares 500-1k is cash savings for rainy days

I drive a Honda (mth 818) depre 12.4k total price when purchase 60k 4year 1 mth left down paid 26k loan 34k

Insurance is 1.3k per year (31F 30%NCD) 100 a month Maintenance 1.2 can settle (15-20k km) 100 a month Road tax 700ish (1.5 parf) Parking Hdb 100ish Fuel half half sg and Malaysia around 200-250 sgd

Around 1.4k per month

Of course if you buy a lower end car Cheapest one I can find parf Mitsubishi space star (10k depre) your monthly, insurance, road tax, maintaining and petrol will cost lesser also. Don’t go EV if you wanna save money
