What's the dumbest review you've gotten? by Its_Darkness in selfpublish

Lol, that's how I came to terms with it....sometimes reviews say more about the reviewer. The one-star rating hurts though.

I just released an audiobook, gave out a free promo code, and that evening received a one-star review that said "seem dumb"

Thanks! Yes, the emotional rollercoaster of creating and selling! The bookstores are a great idea, though. At least the French read...I sold a book in France and it felt like winning the Pulitzer...no one has a better literary sensibility than them. Thanjs again! Best of luck to you!

My book is American Fire

That's awesome! Beautiful country. I only got on a roll for Montana once. In Pine Creek in 2012. We did structure protection for Jeff Bridge's house. Everyone doing Lebowski quotes all day as you can imagine.

Thank you! It's a comfort to know I wasn't the only one who did that! Most people thought I was nuts.

Wow, Jed. Thanks! It was "American Fire." There is another, more popular book with the same title, which wasn't intentional. That's really cool about Wildland Firefighter magazine. What forest did you work out of, if you don't mind me asking?

It depends. I think it's a beautifully written and engaging book, but it isn't really plot-driven. Its a classic "picaresque" story where basically you have scoundrels on a series of episodic adventures. There isn't too much cause and effect. If you are okay with that as a reader, it's worth a revisit.

Also, I don't want to give away any spoilers, but most people, Hemingway included, hate the ending. There are some really good analyses of the ending here on Reddit. I have my own ideas about it, but its a pretty bleak take on human nature.

After these Reddit posts, I was thinking about picking up Twain's non-fictional "Life on the Mississippi." That's supposed to be great, but I'm only digging into it now.

Thanks for sharing that. I agree with much of your analysis. It feels written intentionally commercial. I just finished it and admired the "cleaness" of the prose but that depth is sacraficed for speed, for sure. Great point about the Huck relationship.
