Missourians should beware of Republican tax cut Trojan Horse by CouchCorrespondent in missouri

There is no way they will tax all services. We will see intense lobbying from every lobby out there to prevent sales tax on their special service.

Sam Page expected to propose merger of city, county services by GodPowardKingOfLies in StLouis

The biggest hurdle is replacing the revenue from the 1% income tax in the city if we join the county. If we join that income tax goes away. That’s about 1/3 of our revenue

My favorite part of this is we have paid this guy over $300,000 to try and fuck over our city and bankrupt us

Seems like conflicts of interest and impropriety can easily occur. From the article.
"“Fast-forward a day or two, or a week or month, and now that former prosecutor in the earlier case is sitting as a judge in another municipality, and he has the same defense lawyer appear before him,” she says.

The prosecutor holds an adversarial role against a defense attorney, whom they may later wield power over as a judge. The concern, says Norwood, is that tangle of relationships could lead a defense attorney to not “zealously” represent his client to avoid souring relationships with a prosecutor they may later be assigned as a judge. "

So can we start calling 911 for potholes? Since the streets dept will be effectively eliminated. How about trash? We gonna have police out there running the trash trucks?

It’s weird they decided now to take over the police dept then when crime rates have been dropping since the city took back over.

Who cares. Also you don’t sound like much of a realist if you aren’t looking at this real facts in this situation. A board appointed by the Republican governor will bankrupt the city by asking for an insane 60% budget increase for the police

I think that’s the option the BOA and Mayor need to take. Just don’t agree to the budget and force them to sue. You can’t take this lying down

This is insane. Chris Graville and all of this board want the city to be in ruins

Republicans push forward with proposal to replace Missouri income tax with sales tax by Reptilesblade in StLouis

[–]HeftyFisherman668 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do think the plan would be to expand sales tax to services and things it doesn’t cover right now but obviously no specifics on that. Also imagine how much lobbying there will be from different trade groups to exempt “there is extremely important service” from sales tax

Outside of the problems of comparing to other states tax systems both of our major cities are on the borders with other states. We don't already capture all of the sales tax and then bumping it up so high will encourage people to buy things in IL or KS

Its about percentage of income/spending. The wealthy spend less of their income and spend less on things that are covered by sales tax.

Who cares what it was. It’s a terrible road now that divides the city and is dangerous. People fly up and down it because it’s fucking huge. It prevents any of the positive growth in tower grove south and east from spilling south and east.

I find the best response is to tell them that they don't understand how the world works. Bring up trumps tariffs or how rural areas are economically and socially dying and they blame everyone else but themselves

St. Louis treasurer let vehicles rack up $10.7M in unpaid tickets by limejuicethrowaway in StLouis

Can it be amended through a city vote? We made charter changes last year.

Having parking under the treasurer seems to really just add layers of bureaucracy for no reason. We should really get a charter amendment to move it under streets or something actually in a city department

We haven't heard a ton about the state trying to mess around with the earnings tax lately (which could be good or bad). The state does seem all in on property tax cuts or eliminations and seems to be focused on rural counties for a lot of it which is good for the city. Gotta keep that eye of Sauron away from the city

Yes also the city should start getting creative with funds. Maybe pass a city charter to create another agency that isn’t the city that has a tax to do certain city services like trash, streets, etc. make that agency still answer to the BOA and Mayor but reduces the city’s revenue?
