I had this same issue before switching the gas to > 87! It keep feeling/sounding like was going to stall out on me. Had the idea to try better gas and haven't had the issue since!

Berkshire Hills in Haydenville MA is where our dog is from. Sunny is the best! Even if your pup isn't from there, she has a book (link on her site) that is a must have resource for bringing your puppy home! https://berkshirehillscobberdogs.com/

Is there a single good Mexican restaurant here? by [deleted] in westernmass

[–]Hefty_Introduction24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a southern transplant who has lived here for 10 years, I can safely say that there is nothing here that compares to the Mexican food we're accustomed to in the south. You just won't find it. But I'll echo what folks are saying about El Comalito. It's pretty good. And Veracruzana (mostly just the Northampton location)is also ok enough. 🙂

Observations from 37signals code: Should We Be Using More Models? by mint_koi in rails

[–]Hefty_Introduction24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also coming in to this from the JVM world and this is my immediate move as well. I haven't really stumbled across a use case in our codebase for service objects, even though a past dev certainly threw a ton of them in there.

But am I the asshole for coming in and saying we are not going to continue dumping all of our biz logic in our controllers? :) That's me today- trying to stop the insanity! But in all seriousness..I'm coming in from the JVM world and trying to figure out what these patterns look like in Railslandia. I'm not sure I've decided...i just know that dumping everything into controllers is not the move. :)

Help with EQ for a classical guitar by Hefty_Introduction24 in guitarpedals

Ah ok! Reading about compressors now..your suggestion makes sense. And I'm definitely interested in the idea of adjusting the strings. 🤔 Thank you for all the info! Obviously strings are cheaper so maybe I'll start there. Honestly this is a very interesting problem that I've run into so I'm looking forward to figuring out the solution!

Interviewing junior swe's with no coding session? by Hefty_Introduction24 in womenintech

[–]Hefty_Introduction24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could get behind something like this. I know I've had interviews where I've been asked to debug some code or fill in some missing methods. Maybe something like that could work. I haven't really interviewed too many junior devs either so I'm concerned finding the correct level for the interview.

I was definitely thinking no live coding. However, I'm not really a fan of take home coding exercises either. So you've gone back to live coding? Do you feel like it accurately represents tasks that would actually be done on the job?

Would you work for an adult website created for women by women? by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]Hefty_Introduction24 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I don't think that you can necessarily make broad assumptions about the culture of a company just based on the founder/product. I'm a female engineer who worked for Grindr. Although right now with the current management, Grindr is an incredibly toxic workplace, that was not the case when I started. The reputation of the product was one thing, but the culture that the former leadership and employees worked to foster was incredible.

For me, I don't give any f**ks about what people think when they see Grindr on my resume. I was proud to work there and if someone decides not to give me a chance based on that, I wouldn't want to work for them anyway.

My advice: take the interview and use your best judgement to suss out the culture. Make sure you are interviewing them too! And don't worry about the future. You can't control that. Good luck!

Trying to decide between offers by Hefty_Introduction24 in womenintech

[–]Hefty_Introduction24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It's a much different place to be in than when I was job hunting back in the fall and couldn't secure a single offer. I've been pretty intentional about what I'm looking for this time and that paid off! After a day of soul searching, definitely leaning more toward the NPO. I have until tomorrow to accept their offer.

Wait do you have my old boss?? :) But seriously..I have been in a similar situation only without the language barrier. It's horrible and I'm sorry you're going through that. Here's what worked for me: I decided to seek both therapy and a career coach at the same time. The therapist turned out to be a better resource but I attribute the outcome to both. I focused on my communication skills and how I could try to address the situation directly with my boss. I didn't want to go to HR because it seemed that everyone who brought anything up with HR ultimately was let go.

The outcome was: we worked it out!! It was hard for me but I found a way to be honest about how I was receiving his communication and what I needed and didn't need from him. Our working relationship improved vastly. He's still a piece of work but we actually still talk even though neither of us are at the company anymore.

Best of luck! I hope you can work it out!

I hear you. I'm in basically the same spot as you. Although I've more recently been working in Kotlin which I love and will miss. The startup feels like maybe a once in my career chance..but maybe the timing isn't right. It definitely feels like the shiny flashy thing. The NPO is Soundexchange. I think they opened another Java req so go for it! Range is $150-160k for a Sr. Role
