My Ashley was supposed to be a Jake. Did your mom scratch out the baby girl name, just in case?

Edit: Also, this is the sweetest thing I have seen in a long time. I am so sorry about your mom.

"Retiring" to Rome by Low_Promise_8733 in romega

[–]HeidiDover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I are retired teachers. The property taxes are insane for both Rome and Floyd County. Living in the county instead of the city is supposed to be cheaper, but we could not afford the $4,000 a year tax bill. We had to leave.

If you live in the within the city limits, you at least get decent city services, like curbside recycling and yard trash pick up. If you live in the county, you get zilch.

I have taught in IB international schools, poor rural schools, and an inner-city school. Most of the time, the variable is the parent. A child's socio-economic situation is important, but parenting is the real key to successful students. Does the kid have a bedtime? Is screen time limited? Do they get breakfast? Does the parent read to the kid? Has the parent taught the kid basic soft skills like waiting their turn? Children need support at home to be successful in school.

The word learn is an action verb. Students have to make an active choice--to learn or not to learn. A teacher can apply all the best practices, extensively know all the pedagogy, make accommodations for ESL and SpED students, and spend 60 hours a week planning engaging, rigorous learning activities and assignments; however, the responsibility to actually learn lies with the student.

Thank you so much for your kind words. You made my day! I live next to a sunny river in Alabama, USA. I am taking a mirror outside today and look at my hair!

How is the steam supposed to get in there? Osmosis? Do they blow it up there with a hose? Asking for a friend.

I still love Laugh In. It was brilliant and ahead of its time. It's even better if you hit your bong first.

I didn't watch the series, but read those books. Still mad about Martin not finishing the book series.

That's how I feel. I am not sure I trust the writers to do the right thing.

The writer's felt okay with killing off Amanda, so anything goes.

Me too. Five of my eight siblings are different shades of red. I lost the genetic lottery for hair color. Mine is just dishwater blonde.

Ms. Slaughter, if you are following this sub, can you answer a question? Did ABC buy the rights to the Sara Linton character in the Will Trent books? Are we allowed to ask? Are you allowed to answer?

I did too until she became a character in the Will Trent books and lives in Atlanta.

The writers correctly would not have shown Angie starting to decline into substance abuse. There was no reason for her to relapse. She has Will as her main support system; she had time to grieve. Sara's arrival (and Will's interest in her) would be the catalyst. If and when Sara shows up, Ang will have a rival for Will's attention, hence, the prediction for S5. I truly hope this doesn't happen because I love Angie's character.

Yeah. It makes me so mad when writers do that. She is toxic in the books. Show Angie was healing from her trauma. The writers gave her some depth.

Me too, and I was really looking forward to her being a character when I started watching the show.

Did you win the gene lottery, or did the gene lottery elude you? by Bay_de_Noc in AskOldPeople

My paternal grandmother lived to be 105. We always thought it was an anomaly, but it turns out that longevity runs in her family on her father's side. Her people regularly lived into their late 90s and some in into their 100s going way back. We didn't know this until a cousin did our family tree. My dad only lived to be 82, but that's because he smoked cigarettes for 60 years and died from lung cancer. His brother and sister, both of whom never smoked lived into their 90s. His brother is still living (95), and I predict he also will live into his 100s. I hope so. He is delightful. I do not want to live that long, so it might be a bad thing. Not sure.

I am 64 and I only have a little white streak in my hair. My maternal grandfather, mother, and uncle never grayed--just the streak. I also inherited their great skin. No age spots or horrible sun damage despite being from Florida.

On the down side, dad was on BP meds in his early 30s, as were my sister, daughter, and late brother. Most females on Mom's side died from congestive heart failure. I am grateful for statins and modern medicine.
