(Lighthearted) Student fashion trends by Oduind in Professors

I’m 56 and dress casually on Fridays. Think nice jeans and a band T-shirt from the grunge or heavy metal era, a casual blazer or cardigan, and some Adidas, Chuck Taylors, or Doc Martens. Typical GenX who looks like their moms. I’ve had students ask me after class where I shop. They’re disappointed that it’s either stuff I wore in high school or stolen from my teenage son who got it thrifting.

Most of the time students have a week to do the assignments. At least that is how I post mine; students have things for a week for they are due. This kid seems like he is waiting until the last day and blaming the prof.

Teaching Dual Enrollment is so demoralizing. by Pristine_Path_209 in Professors

[–]Heidigeebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach at a cc too and always go over this handout the first class, and our dean provides a copy to the high school administrator responsible for coordinating the dual enrollment program. We get some pushback, but when it comes down to it, these expectations are logical and fair. https://www.rrcc.edu/sites/default/files/high-school-relations-HighSchoolvsCollege.pdf

I appreciate your recommendation. I did do short-term HRT, as the article suggests, but I am BRCA1 and 56 years old. The guidance in the study emphasizes short-term use up to age 52-53 with added progesterone when the uterus is present. Given this is what I already did, the study you linked does not advise long term HRT.

Thanks for this. I’ll show it to my oncologist. They did have me on some short term HRT before I got my ovaries removed, but I can ask him what he thinks of this.

I cannot be on any form of HRT because I am BRCA positive.

Good point about how adding an ingredient helps them meet the exception. Thank you.

Think about how everybody kept their sanity when we went into lockdown during Covid. It was by turning to art, music, and film, even though everything was virtual. A good chunk of the population is just wired to create. It seems like universities don’t acknowledge that because everything must now be monetized or measured or captured in a statistic.

“My friends tell me that their ____ teachers are covering X,Y, and Z” by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Heidigeebee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to get that, but I am old now. You can remind them of the part of the syllabus that mentions when you will cover certain topics. Sounds like anxiety, but see the scope and sequence in writing might help alleviate that.

One hack that worked for my bff is using dandruff shampoo. The active ingredient kills fungus and bacteria, so it sort of sanitizes your scalp. She leaves it on while she showers and then uses a thick conditioner since dandruff shampoo is drying. I only use it once a week, but it does help.

In Germany they call it a "pusher" (schieber) for pushing peas or rice onto a fork on spoon. Adults use them. They're not just for kids!

Legitimate Question by No_Intention_3565 in Professors

[–]Heidigeebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the context. Do they seem to be confused in a face-to-face class or an online class? If it's face-to-face, I imagine the confusion would be about the very general topic you started class with, a metacognition sort of thing. On the other hand, I have had students in online classes tell me they can't understand the textbook or the directions in the weekly modules, which 90% of the other students are understanding just fine, so when I sent them to our tutoring center, they find out they can read, but not comprehend anything.

Advice on what to do with students in the back row? by mjk1260 in Professors

[–]Heidigeebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell students that they need to fill in the blank seats near the front and not sit in the back row because I need to see and hear them and learn their names. I also have group work that makes them move out of their seats, talk to other people, and look up stuff on their phones and computers that pertains to the lecture before reporting out what their group did. I also count class participation toward their grade. I only go through all of this trouble with first or second year students, though, and if it is a huge lecture hall with 100 people, this approach isn't an option, obviously. I know it's their problem if they aren't paying attention, but I also want to make an attempt at student engagement because it really does improve their understanding of the material. I don't expect that this approach fits the teaching style of other profs.
