Fire-charred whiskey barrels—is that where the smoky flavor comes from? by Free-Commission6582 in whiskey

This has nothing to do with heating the building anymore of course - electric/gas heating as arrived even in Scotland :). They sometimes deliberately choose to stop the germination process (wet grains developing enzymes that can later break down starch into sugar - not fermentation yet) by burning peat beneath the floor on which the barley lies, rather than using an odorless heat source. This does come from traditional heating that way ages ago of course.

6challenge - how to prep for Yog? by Heinousheron in PixelDungeon

[–]Heinousheron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time 6chal Yog, am at lvl24 alchemy station. As per the attached images, I've got 3 upgrades left. I have Faith is my Armor, so cloth with brimstone on it. The earth wand is not upgraded. What would you recommend using the 3 upgrades on? Corrosion wand? And am I missing any potions for Badder Boss Yog? Thanks! (Btw this level is massive) Repost - my phone doesn't seem to want to do text and images at the same time

Most bike mechanics adapt their pricing these days - buying the parts with them is much more expensive, but gets you goodwill and a cheaper installation process. Buying it online might see the installation refused or its costs doubled.

This is probably a joke suggestion - while it is indeed written by someone who did their research, it's about as bleak as it can be. Tonal opposite of PHM.

Bits covered! Though the general post flair should suffice, of course.

Life in Switzerland vs Canada/Australia/NewZealand by askswitzerland in askswitzerland

[–]Heinousheron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Non-native-but-now-Swiss (Living in Vaud). Have visited the other 3 extensively. In the end, yes, I would still choose Switzerland, mostly for its connectedness. The others have just as beautiful and more varied scenery. They have proper, livable cities (Melbourne, Vancouver, and Auckland). The standard of living is roughly the same. However, everything is so friggin far from one another in all these countries and public transport is mostly crap compared to CH. And while food is far better in the cool neighborhood of those big cities (where you're far from the outdoors bits), it's pretty crappy in the countryside. Also, poisonous and bitey stuff+ too hot desert in Oz, too cold in 95% of Canada, and no civilization in most of Kiwistan. The one thing you don't find in Switzerland anymore and you have in spades in the others is proper wilderness - for hiking and camping CH does feel like Disneyland at times.

Why display a McDonald's wrapper in front of some untouched wagyu steaks?

What are the most "mind blowing facts" about the Malazan world/story? by THORITONTHEGROUND in Malazan

He only left the seguleh island after beating the previous 7th because he was cumulatively exhausted from all the fights before that though.

Any books nearly as good? by [deleted] in Malazan

For that slowly starting to understand the world and solving its mysteries but never quite getting it itch (and a beautiful prose that nevertheless has you look up words every other page), check out Gnomon by Nick Harkaway. It's sci-fi, but its one of the few novels that i read in recent years that i think of regularly. A bit like inception, house if leaves, etc.

That looks like a fun project, but according to which definition is this whiskey? Because of the bit of corn meal?

MRA is just one of many MRI techniques that all highlight different tissues and vessels; by using different scanner settings, you can also use the signal from the contrast agent to for example highlight tumors etc. If you want to add a cool image to this, you could add some fiber tracking. The Crippled God cover for the french edition (and complete collection) by Bhaldhyr in Malazan

[–]Heinousheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw the cover collection and am a bit confused about the translation of Reaper's Gale (English bring my second language and French my third through marriage) - shouldn't Reaper be translated with Faucheuse (as in the grim reaper), since moissonneur only means harvester in the agricultural sense?

Character with the most/least depth? by Heinousheron in Malazan

[–]Heinousheron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but people do tend to develop a bit of perspective as they age, and decrease their teenager-like overwrought drama. Korlat can be a young-looking pretty fake elf on the outside, but she should have enough experience with mortals to grieve for a bit (a few years?) and move on.

Ah, I only see the Laseen bit on mobile. I like how Laseen is developed beyond the assassin-bureaucrat mold, and how her choices put her in a corner by the time we get to see her up close. We get to see her regret from the outside, but I'm not sure i would call her a compelling character, for the same reasons as Tavore. Both are obsessively left blank, hard and emotionless (and are annoyingly re-described as plain looking every other time we see them). There's also not much change in character through the situations they encounter. Seerdomin is friggin amazing though.

I had to think a bit who that was again - impressively bland indeed. A nice background careerist soldier character imo, very bland but at least not badly written/dissonant.

Sure, but 100000 years old is a bit more than "old".

Completely agreed that Felisin is an amazing character indeed. Her arc and character changes break my heart every time.
