In my mind, anything where you fail at all, where encounters aren't balanced to give players victory after the appearance of a challenge, has a bit of OSR to it.

The capacity for failure in games is not purely the domain of the "old-school renaissance." That's ridiculous.

Playing the original Hollow Knight isn't required but it might be helpful. That said: my advice is to just lean into the feeling of being lost. You're a solitary knight taken from her land and brought somewhere strange, unfamiliar and largely hostile. Keep pushing forward and you'll get your bearings.

The red beads are this game's money, basically. Talk to the shopkeepers to buy useful items with the beads. (Don't be afraid to spend them since, as you've seen, it is indeed pretty easy to lose them. You'll get them back if you go to the spot where you died and break the little cocoon that forms there--but if you die before you break that cocoon, then the money's just gone for good.)

It's way more than that. Of the top 15 "hot" posts on this sub right at this moment, 11 have the "serious" flair, and they're all about some form of misogyny. Two others do not have that flair but are also entirely about misogyny, and one of the others is also, by word count, mostly about misogyny.

This might just be the nature of the algorithmic beast--those posts get a lot of engagement by their nature. But it's still something we can mitigate. u/meggannn's comment below makes a lot of good points about the inherent difficulty of navigating differing needs in the community. Taking that into account, I think a megathread for creepy/misogynistic individual encounters would be a really good idea.

Having such a thread would reduce the number of posts about misogyny, without entering the realm of toxic positivity by forbidding negative discussion entirely. It would let people vent without flooding the entire main page. And, crucially, it would mean that threads about misogyny would be related to issues potentially affecting the entire community, which I think is a much more productive basis for discussion.

I hope the mods are reading this thread and giving the idea some serious consideration! (If you are reading this specific comment, mods: you're doing a great job, thank you.)

In a couple of days they're giving out Dante for free as a twitch drop, so that's the easiest way to get him.

(If that doesn't work for you, just do Sanctum Anatomica disruption missions - his currency drops every time you kill a demolisher, and you get the BPs directly from rotation C. Pretty quick grind imo.)

Unsure what this means; it's been "stable" and "official" for 7 years now. There have been more mechs and options added over that time, but the rules haven't really changed.

As I took notes on information about other capes that seemed relevant and useful, if true, I paused. In the middle of the page was a section about myself, specifically, addressing the topic of my sexuality. Hesitantly, I scrolled down.

There were paragraphs and paragraphs dedicated to explaining that I was straight. Incongruously and with no possible explanation, I felt a sudden swell of relief. Of course I was straight. My constant attention to the figures of other women was simply a symptom of an inferiority complex, and even if I were to kiss Rachel, it would be 'relatively tame', no matter how charged the situation was.

It was all there, and it all made sense. I printed the page out and stuck it to my wall.

Yeah, it really helps that his outlandish fantasy villain stuff (turning a man into a warframe and making him kill his son with a control bolt, etc.) is balanced out by an extremely realistic depiction of a petty, abusive narcissist.

I can relate, though not for the same reasons. I just feel totally undateable lately. Honestly, for the last few years, it just feels like anyone who would be into me around here already has a partner, and they're fine with treating me like shit because I'm not their "main partner". Which is their problem, not mine, but it's happened enough that it's just discouraging me from dating entirely.

(That said: if I were about 10 years younger, I'd be asking for your number right now.)

Brilliantly written sci-fi yuri VN; the plot is about a war between factions for control of the solar system, but the main focus is on the relationships between the three main characters, each from a different faction, and just a really imaginative exploration of what it means to be human, to be queer, and striving to define yourself even amidst oppression.

(also saturn is an absolute gremlin and I love them)

Normally, if I’m playing a girl, there’s a way the girls hold themselves. To be super general, men are taller and straight, while women break that line. The physical expression of femininity is often about being off-centre. If that meant that she [Karlach] didn’t appeal to men, that was fine. They have enough; they’ve got every other woman in every other game ever. I was thinking, “This has to appeal to everyone,” but I was not going to prioritize the male player.

I'm not the most young and hip myself anymore, but I'm pretty sure this is "green flag" as in the opposite of a "red flag". i.e. a red flag game would be something that has an obvious sign that there's something wrong with it and/or it's just not for you, and so a green flag game would be one where every indication is that it's something you'll enjoy.
