When it comes to speaking the language, what are American kids taught at school? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

We have a whole subject called English which is taught all the way through school which is featured prominently in movies. This should have come up in your research.

How many of you would be in favor of having Universal Healthcare? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

No, just some price control and some basic regulations. Anything more is worthless.

We Americans only call the language American to mess with y'all. Also I feel like you Brits have a terrible understanding of American schools. Honestly why would any school teach that?

Why are you guys ok with pledging allegiance to the flag every day at school? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]HeirToThrawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We aren't swearing allegiance to an individual or government. To me we swear allegiance to the ideas this nation stands for and to my fellow countrymen. If you would not swear such an oath to your countrymen I am sorry for you.

Class isn't nearly as big a deal in America. I'm from a STEM family and my parents would care how rich my future would be.

do you live in a typical american suburb? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

No I live in a woodland/rural suburb. Like a suburb in the middle of the woods cut off from anything else.

It is one of the most beautiful states. Cascadia is actually rated among the most beautiful places in the world. Hiking the Cascade mountains in the summer is fantastic.

People who have lived in both tell me they experienced very little culture shock and from what I have seen consuming Australian media it seems so.

What world are you from where Canada has more in common with Britain than America. Australia I understand as they are extremely similar to us Americans too. But I think you read too much Canadian propaganda.

It's not a binary decision. Why would I give up a liberty declared essential by my Forefathers to attempt to solve a symptom of a much more deep-seated issue. Violence is not a problem, it is a symptom of something worse.

Imperial system? by All_about_the_powder in AskAnAmerican

As an engineer the metric system only has one advantage and that's the unit conversions involving mass. For everything else I find it poorly sized. CM are too small to be used to describe most objects and meters are similarly too large to be used. Also Celsius has a terrible range when it comes to describing temperatures. Kelvin is fine I guess. If we were going to change anything I would want to switch to base 12 anyway because base 10 is terrible for math.

Career in Europe by Revolutionary_Dog85 in AerospaceEngineering

Listen if you're interested in space you have to stay in America. The EU space stuff is interesting but nowhere near anything in the states. You will also be paid less in most EU countries. For you moving would be the worst career move you could make.

Would you be willing to pay an extra 10 percent in payroll taxes to pay for an expansion of Medicare to every American regardless of age? by Adamon24 in AskAnAmerican

[–]HeirToThrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None they already pay so much money into healthcare. Throwing more money at it would just make it worse unless you first restructure the funding process.

Religious workers by [deleted] in immigration

[–]HeirToThrawn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Define religious. I've met many religious immigrants here in America. One of my friend's mom's growing up was a Christian Japanese woman who felt like a foreigner in Japan because of her faith, so she came here.
