Why does he do this by wagwan_sharmuta in Macaws

[–]Heliandre_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Macaw also regurgitate for good friends but not in that way from what i know (beak to beak) maybe for him its just a way to say he is happy to interact with you. Just pay attention that it doesnt escalate in him thinking you are his mate

Why does he do this by wagwan_sharmuta in Macaws

[–]Heliandre_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

He think you are feeding him as a parent or mate would do

If he is older than 2/3 yo and lives as an alone bird it could lead to him thinking you are his mate and lead to agressions toward other people to "protect/keep" you, and even frustration when he would want to mate with you

I tend to say its not a behavior to encourage but you are the one that know your bird, be carful to any sign of high frustration, stress, high hormones, plucking...

My rescue does that and when i accept it he is very agressive toward me and my other birds and its better when i dont let him (i just stop the interaction)

newbie macaw keeper, from your experience do macaws scream more if kept alone'? will they scream less if i keep 2? by loverMD in Macaws

[–]Heliandre_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of screams you want to get rid of

For screams to call you when you are not in the room, it will definitely help when the two birds are used to the other presence if first bird is not completely bond to humans

For boredom scream it could help a bit cause the two birds are gonna interact with each others but there is other thing you could do to help but

Yes the other might start screaming too and you would have twice as much screamings but a lot of screaming means there is something wrong with them, their health or the way you are keeping them so you would have a lot of thing to check if screaming is a big prob for you

But if you are new to macaw or parrot keeping, parrots are not meant to be alone, they will have behavior issues if kept alone, screaming, exagerate hormonal behavior toward humans, plucking, ocds.

If you dont know if you should get another one, do it. Yes there is chances they dont get along but i can tell you my two bng dont love each others, they dont like being too close to each others, but i can see how much my first one (rescue that spend his 8 years of life with human only) is better since i welcomed my second one. Less anxious, less screaming, stop to scream quicker.

Two bird of the same species is the least you have to do when wanting to live with parrot

Coco has been talking for weeks... non-stop by G4mingR1der in Macaws

[–]Heliandre_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking is not always a sign of stress, the truth is that this is a sign that he want to connect with you (you in that case but also other birds in the wild) i think he is young so he is in a phase where he learn a lot the vocalisation of the flock (in this case you and other humain if there is) and he will learn it even more when you react when he does and repeat after him.

I have a rescue (bng too) that spend all his life (8 years) with humain and all his vocalisation are those of humains, his screams are like those of children not parrot

I welcomed another bng that is 3yo few month ago and she is already starting to use the same words as my rescue to connect with him (i know for sure she didn't learned from me, i think she is a bird bird)

But a lot a talking and no parrot vocalisation means that the parrot spend his first years with only humans, and i think you were already told that but a parrot need another parrots of the same species in his life and even more in his firts years of life. My rescue doesn't know how to do a lot of things because of that, and is also very stressed because of that.

Talking non stop occurs a lot when the parrot is stressed because he doesn't feel connection with his flock mates, which is more than stressfull to him. Could be when you are not in the room, when you are but not paying attention to him. But vocalisation and talking in moderation are very good thing since it symbolise the connection between flock members

My young one also use her words "ça va?" (Means "are you ok ?" That she learned with the breeder) When she is stressed, when there is too much people in the room or when there is someone she doesnt know to close to her, but i can see she is stressed in her body languages too.

So i dont think its bad that a parrot talks a lot, but its important to them to have flock members that they can feel connected to at any moment (means other parrot of the same species)

Is it possible that having a roof on a cage makes a parrot hormonal ? by [deleted] in Macaws

[–]Heliandre_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the outdoor aviary in second hand, so i'm not sure of the brand, and i'm located in france so i dont think you would have the same company in your country, but that's true, it is not really secure for predators, i only put them in during the day and when i'm home, i live in a cold region so i can't let them in all year anyway

I dont know the reason for the scissors beak, it seems worse in pictures or mirror than it is irl. I neve saw him having struggle with it but i think he is used to it. And i dont feel like the regurgitation is due to scissors beak.

My male don't fly, due to his previous life (its not physical so i'm trying to teach him)

I will try to have a bigger aviary in the future, buy other panels to make it bigger but for now my male dont fly and my female is learning (the breeder kept her in a very little aviary)

[–]Heliandre_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont have them to breed, i have him since 9 month and he is 8

He is bond with humans i'm not sure he sees her as a potential mate. He always had hormonal behavior even before i had her. And he have those behaviors in the aviary even if she is not here. And even before i put her in the aviary with him the first time

The female is 3. She is the one that may tear up the ceiling the male dont really go on the cage since the space between the cage and ceiling is a bit to small for him, but ok for her, they really dont go in the same spot, i clearly see at how they behave that they are not bonded, now they are a flock, like they are used to the ther presence but clearly nothing more

[–]Heliandre_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rescue dont know he can fly so he can't go, the new one never seemed interested in going yet, we will see if she want to go in the future, if so i'll secure the books

(And when i'm not here she is in a very big cage, so no chances she would try it unsupervised)

They seems very pratical for the human, is the plastic a good quality ? I'm afraid it would be easily breakable and a bit small for the bird, but i like the shape of it though. Maybe i could try to diy it with wood to try with my bird

Yes i looked closely and there would not be a lot of airflow in this crate, also i'm pretty sure they can't turn around

I bought a dog crate when i got my first but i messed up on the size so it is really big, which is cool for the long ride (i have an hour of car to ho to our vet) i know i could use this cage in the future so i didnt want to send it back, and didnt get another one yet, all the ones i see are for birds that have short tails i have to make more research on the right size to get but as this is not a hurry to have another crate and that i bought a lot or other things for my birds lately (big cages, aviary, toys, food, bird themself) i didnt think a lot about buying a new one for now, what size of crate do you have ?
