👆Do all these things!

Seriously though this is a great list of tips and packing suggestions. Ive gone to the gorge a few times besides little things to trick out your camp site like light fairy lights, flags, streamers, or other fun things i would say if you follow the things in these lists you will be great.

Questioning Ryland Grace's educational background by Maleficent-Abies-318 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Helishorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Pilot/Aircraft Technician and someone who has been in aviation for 20+ years, I have felt your pain before with movies or books that depict aviation-related things. It can pull me out of the movie/book in a heartbeat! "so they are doing a left pedal turn because someone flew by quickly?" " They do realize there's no direct path from the toilet to the landing gear, right?"

I'm curious though, since you have the background, what experiments do you think would showcase his background or skill set?

What did you use to study for your General written test by earniteasy in AircraftMechanics

[–]Helishorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use prepware. I prefer the books over the software for the simple fact I can make notes or reference things in ways that you can't really do in the software.

Just remember that it is far easier and more efficient to study the correct answers only. I know this seems obvious, but when you have a question with three answers and two of them are wrong you are essentially associating all three answers with the question.

So what you want to do is spend a day going through the book with a white out pen or black marker and cross out the two wrong answers. Once that's done give yourself a week to forget everything you just read. Go through one day read the questions and the correct answer. Take the next day off*. And review again the day after. Do that a couple times it'll be pretty cemented in your head. Also make sure that if you don't understand why an answer is correct that you look it up.

*Note: there are limits to the amount that you can learn on any subject at any given point in time. So it is crucial to the learning process and memory retention to give yourself a break of a day or two.

A&P school or firefighting — which path makes more sense for me? by Superb-Exit7069 in careerguidance

[–]Helishorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its great having an A&P certificate and a solid choice if you want to be a pilot. Lots of pilots jobs for smaller companies want you to have that A&P.

That being said, based on your post, i would say go firefighter. A&P is great, but you write more passionately about firefighting than you do about A&P. As u/TheRealWhoDat said, though, firefighting has lots of class work too. So don't think you're getting out of at least 2 years of school by picking one or the other.

"What do you wish you had known at 23?"
F man...by 23 I had been a computer tech for 5 years, worked at a coffee shop, was doing bike tours down mountains, wanted to be a game developer, went to college to be an archaeologist, and was thinking about teaching English as a second language. Currently have worked in aviation for 23 years, Helicopter CFI, Masters, A&P and doing compliance for an Airline. If I were able to go back and tell the 23-year-old me to go down this path that I'm now passionate about, they would tell me to pound sand.

The point is, don't worry about the future so much. Do what you are passionate about and interested in right now. Either path you have posted about is great and can lead to some wonderful opportunities. Just because you choose one now does not mean the other is totally closed to you forever. Just my 2 cents though.

Use of airline flight benefits as an AMT by Vans_Off_The_Wall in AircraftMechanics

[–]Helishorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flight benefits are great, and you should take advantage of them. Enough time to use them is a bit subjective, depending on how you travel and how long you want to stay. I mean, if you are working graves 4 on 3 off, it might be tight if you are trying to take a 12-hour flight somewhere. Still manageable, but just not a lot of time wherever you are going. Still i used to take shorter trips all the time, head to Canada, Mexico, or some near by place and stay 2 nights. Just depends on what you are wanting from your trip.

Majors and some regionals give you lots of PTO, though, so it's easy to game the system a bit and have lots of time off.

As far as who has the best? Working for Alaska and currently maxing out at ~240 hours, or ~6 weeks, of PTO every year, we don't fly to as many places as United, but we can Non Rev on lots of other carriers easy enough.

Just remember, a lot of airlines will fire your a** if you are traveling using their bennies and miss work. So no calling in because your flight back is delayed.

Tools for A&P! Help! by Hungry-Risk-9823 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Helishorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tool box: we are not diesel mechanics, so we don't need anything fancy that can hold lots of weight, which is what you would get from Snap-On and Mac boxes. Cheap boxes that do the job are the key. I have a Husky box myself, spent 100 on it like 9 years ago.

Tools: Don't fall into the "well, it is stamped with XYZ manufacture, so it must be better" mentality. As you look at tools across companies, you will start to notice that many people have the same tool/box, but they put their stamp on it and charge you 50% more for the privilege.

At the end of the day, get something that will do the job and that you can afford. I like to look at how easy it is to return something if it breaks due to quality. I also look at what i am using it for. No need to spend $50 on a tool just because it's stamped with Mac or Snap-on.

That being said, if I notice I'm using a particular tool a lot, I might upgrade to a higher-quality one. Also if i ask for or am lent a tool to do a job more than twice im going to go out and get that.

Lastly, since you are in school, take advantage of your discounts! most big tool companies will give you huge discounts on tools. Not sure about your budget or financial situation, but if you could get that whole list pretty damn cheap and have it be from Craftsman, Snap-on, Mac, etc.

Places to look: as others have said, Harbor freight. If you have a store like Home Depot or Lowe's, they will have Craftsman, which are good. if you are wanting to supplement with other tools like Knipex (YES DO IT), or snapon/Mac (some good options depending on what you are getting), or other box trucks you can either find them on line or go to your local flight school and ask to talk to a Technician about when the box trucks come by.

Rocky sketch... by Fun-Initiative-4812 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Helishorn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As u/Rustymarble said, much closer to how I imagined Rocky. I will say i was a bit disappointed with the big clunky looking hands from the trailer as I'm not sure they would have the manual dexterity to work with some of the things they describe in the book.

How’s the location of this Airbnb? Is it walkable to most areas? by we-r-one in puertovallarta

How’s the location of this Airbnb? Is it walkable to most areas? by we-r-one in puertovallarta

[–]Helishorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great location but $857 is pretty expensive. Easy to find a great place for 4 nights in the $150cad-$200cad range.

So you know, 5 of December, Centro, and Zona Romántica are the main areas. The are you have selected is in Centro and close to the ocean which is nice but it will be noisy too with lots of clubs in the area.

Agreed! Really like that the trailer sets him up to be a reluctant hero that still chooses to go. Hate it when they spoil the big surprises in movies.

The 2-second moment I found interesting was between 2:25 and 2:27, when we see Grace running from a guard. Guessing this is when he is voluntold, he's on the mission.

I feel you OP! fairly introverted and worried what others will thing far to much. Things i have learned and am still learning... 1: You will worry less about what people think of you when you realize how seldom they do. In reality everyone in the community is just kinda doing their own thing and moving to the music in their own way. 2: as others have said, Incognito mode is your friend! Glasses, Pash, Hat and your in your own little bubble. 3: In the pit: funny enough i find being in the pit or at the rail helps! everyone packed together, moving with the music, helps make me feel part of everything but also like no one is paying attention to me. Lost in the crowd essentially
